Flame salmon board for a fire pit

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a fire bowl in the garden and you want salmon beside the flame, not a fillet on a kettle grate. A flame salmon board for a fire pit only works if the bracket can grip the rim you own. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY and tools, updated on 20 October 2026. It uses the amazon.co.uk listings in the [smoking plank comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/smoking-plank), plus GOV.UK and fire-service advice. We did not fit these brackets to a bowl. Cedar taste versus a washable board is on [cedar or stainless](/hub/grill-accessories/smoking-plank/sub/smoking-plank-cedar-or-steel).

What a flame board is doing

A flame board stands at an angle next to the fire. The bracket hooks the rim and the heat comes from the side. You cannot prop a short flat board upright. The fish slides. Three listings are built for that cook: Relaxdays cedar, the onlyfire cedar pair, and the onlyfire stainless board. Flat 5 by 11 inch planks are the wrong shape. Relaxdays also sells a different set on its own UK shop.

The three boards in this comparison

Relaxdays, B07F9T2ZB7, is two untreated cedar boards at £39.90, about 46 by 15.5 cm, mount stated for a wall up to 3 mm, 4.4 from 1,716. The UK review describes wood that lasted four fires. The onlyfire cedar pair, B0B9S7RB97, is £34.99. Bullets say 22 by 5.7 inches and red cedar. The dimension line says 50 by 14.5 by 2 cm, and the set weighs 1.64 kg. One UK review says it worked over a barbecue. A non-UK review says only one holder arrived. The material line says stainless steel while the bullets say red cedar. The onlyfire stainless board, B0DSBHK4ZX, is 60.2 by 19 cm at £24.99. It does not need a soak and does not add cedar aroma unless you add chips. Two UK reviews are positive, including a whole side. The star line is 4.8 from 31. The steel grade is not stated.

Rim thickness decides the fit

Relaxdays states walls up to 3 mm. A review says a round bowl with a 6 to 8 mm wall did not fit. Do not bend the rim to make the bracket close. A review describes a Weber rim deformed that way. The onlyfire cedar pair does not state a millimetre limit. Check both brackets on arrival. The stainless board uses angles on the board itself, and a UK review says it held the fish at the side of a fire pit. Those reviews do not measure the rim. Relaxdays' own UK shop lists another set, nearer 50 by 20 cm and at a higher price. The amazon file stays £39.90 and about 46 by 15.5 cm.

Soak, oil, and distance

Reviews in the Relaxdays file say to soak a cedar flame board, and they say a dry board burns. The listing does not give a minute count, so this page will not invent one. The hour in water, then a move from direct to indirect heat, is Weber UK's recipe for a flat plank, on the soak guide. A different Relaxdays UK shop page says to soak if you cannot keep the board about 20 cm from the flame. That sentence belongs to the other product. The board sits beside the fire, not in it. The stainless board skips the soak. Chips on the fire are how that listing says you add smoke. A cedar smell is not a thermometer.

Fire-pit safety

The fire stays outdoors. GOV.UK and the London Fire Brigade rule out a tent, an awning, a caravan, and a balcony. Do not leave the fire while the board is on the rim. Keep water, sand, or a hose within reach. Do not start the fire with petrol or feed it treated timber. Hot ash does not go into a plastic bin. If cedar dust from cutting a board leaves you wheezing, see a GP.

Common questions

Will this clip onto my fire bowl?
Only if the rim matches the bracket. Relaxdays states a wall up to 3 mm. A review says a round bowl of 6 to 8 mm did not fit. Measure the rim before you order, and do not bend the bowl to close the gap. The onlyfire cedar pair says the brackets adjust, and one review still received a single holder.
How far should the board sit from the flame?
Beside the fire, not in it. The amazon Relaxdays listing does not state a distance. A different Relaxdays UK shop page, for a different set, says to soak if you cannot keep about 20 cm. If the only place for the board is inside the flame, the cook will char the wood.
Do I soak a flame board?
Soak a cedar one. Reviews say a dry Relaxdays board burns, and the listing does not publish a minute count. The stainless onlyfire board does not need a soak. The hour-long Weber method is written for a flat plank on a barbecue, not printed on these brackets.
Cedar or steel on a fire pit?
Choose Relaxdays or the onlyfire cedar pair if you want wood in the flavour and the rim fits. Choose the stainless board at £24.99 if you want a washable surface and you will add chips for smoke. The pair with red cedar in the bullets is not the steel board, even though its material line says stainless.
Can I use a flat plank upright?
No. A 5 by 11 inch grilling plank has no bracket and is sized for a grate. Standing it against a rim is how the fish slides off. Buy a flame board if the fire bowl is the cooker.
Can I cook this in a tent or on a balcony?
No. GOV.UK and the London Fire Brigade say the fire stays outside, not in a tent, awning, or caravan, and not on a balcony. Keep water nearby, and do not tip hot ash into a plastic bin.
