Grill thermometer: which tool matches the job

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to cook chicken on a kettle, or a steak under the grill, and the search box only offers one phrase: grill thermometer. That name covers four instruments, and only one of them reads the centre of the food. A folding pen is a spot check you pull out. A wired probe stays in and beeps from a base. A wireless probe talks to a phone or a case. A dome dial reads the air in the lid. What the number is allowed to mean

The figure you need for food is the centre. The Food Standards Agency’s thorough-cooking line is 70°C for 2 minutes in the middle, or an equivalent such as 75°C for 30 seconds. Which foods must hit that sits on the barbecue meat temperature page. If the sensor is in the lid, it is not taking that reading. IEC 60529 codes are enclosure tests. IP67 lines on the AWLKIM and the ThermoMaven still say rinse only or do not soak. Follow the care line when it is stricter than the code. A calibration certificate is not a UK legal duty for a home cook. ETI notes that a NIST reference is not UKAS accreditation. The ThermoMaven box includes a certificate and a stated ±0.3°C. The YOTOM file has no accuracy figure.

What this set can actually buy

Shelf prices are these twelve amazon.co.uk listings. About £7.99 to £8.99 buys a pen or the YOTOM pair. About £13.99 to £24.99 buys a hybrid, a wired base, or the ThermoMaven. About £35.99 to £89.99 buys Bluetooth, the ProTemp pit hub, or the CHEF iQ. BBC Good Food’s 2026 round-up is right that the type depends on what you cook. The orange and black TP03H files both print 4.6 from 136,174 and the same review text. The TP17 and TP17B both print 4.5 from 18,248. Colour is not a second sample. Four listings disagree with themselves. AWLKIM’s reusability field says single use while the bullets describe a keeper. CIRYCASE’s spec field caps at 300°F while the bullets use Celsius. Inkbird’s spec field tops out at 100°C, and the battery field says 1 12V. LYMIN’s spec field stops at 212°F, on five reviews.

A short check before you order

Ask what the number must describe, how thick the food is, whether you will watch a phone or hear a beep from a base, and whether the listing still says do not soak. A pen from about £7.99 to £24.99 matches a steak or a final chicken check. The AWLKIM file has no accuracy figure. A wired TP17-class base is enough when the lid stays shut, and the shared reviews say the cable is not waterproof and should not cross flame. An app helps only if the case or charger stays near the cooker. Many kitchens keep a pen and a leave-in. That is two jobs.

Common questions

What kind of grill thermometer should I buy first?
Buy the tool for the cook you actually do. A folding pen is first for steaks, burgers, and a final chicken check. A leave-in is first if you shut the lid on a long joint and want an alarm. A lid dial is first only when a dead dome gauge is the problem, and you still need a food probe on poultry day.
Is a lid gauge the same as a meat thermometer?
A lid gauge, including the YOTOM dials in this set, measures cooker air. It can help you hold a kettle at a steady heat. It does not read the middle of a chicken, a burger, or a joint.
Do I need an app?
You need an app only if the probe stays in the meat and you will keep a phone, case, or charger in range. A pen has no app. A wired TP17 can alarm without Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi on the CHEF iQ or the ProTemp S1 still depends on a unit near the cooker.
What does IP67 mean on a food probe?
IP67 is an IEC 60529 enclosure test: dust protection plus a defined immersion. The AWLKIM and the ThermoMaven also say rinse only or do not soak. Follow that care line. It is not a dishwasher instruction.
Is a NIST line a UK legal calibration?
NIST is a US laboratory reference. UKAS is the UK accreditation body. ETI’s note is that a home thermometer is not under a blanket legal duty to carry a certificate. The ThermoMaven certificate sits beside an ice-water and boiling-water sense check.
When is a wired probe enough without Wi-Fi?
A wired dual-probe base is enough when you can shut the lid, keep the cable off the flame, and hear a beep from the side table. The TP17 and TP17B sit there at about £18.94 and £19.94. Treat the cable as not waterproof, which the shared reviews already flag.
