Stainless or galvanised chimney starter

Updated: 22 October 2026

Two amazon.co.uk chimneys can look identical, then one title says aluminium, the field says alloy steel, and reviews say galvanised. This page explains galvanised, aluminised, and stainless lines in the [chimney starter comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/chimney-starter). Rankings stay on [best chimney starter UK](/hub/grill-accessories/chimney-starter/sub/chimney-starter-best). Peter F. checked these GBP figures on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab burn. Galvanised entry and mid band

Galvanised chimneys dominate about £9.99 to £19.99: zinc-coated sheet, a plastic handle, and on the better rows a shield and a second grip. For occasional UK gardens that is enough if you knock out ash, keep the tube out of winter rain, and accept surface rust. Buyers replace a worn coating rather than restore it. Big Smokey BSCH01 at about £9.99 cites 0.7 mm galvanised and a nylon handle, while another row says stainless. Assembly is required, and the capture has three ratings. Electoys at about £11.99 is 3.4 from sixteen, with sharp-edge complaints. SA Products SA1294 at about £12.65 has an aluminium title, an alloy-steel field, and reviews that say galvanised, plus melted handles. LIVIVO, about £12.99 to £16.99, is galvanised wording with hot-handle reviews on Deluxe. Amazon Basics JC902 at about £15.35 states galvanised steel and up to 3.0 kg. GFTIME at about £15.99 is powder-coated, not stainless. Gloves still apply when plastic fails. Health and Safety Executive metal-fume guidance is about welding galvanised sheet, not lighting a chimney on a patio.

Aluminised compact: Weber 7447

Aluminised steel is steel with a thin aluminium layer for heat reflection, which is how Weber UK describes Rapidfire chimneys. The compact 7447 (about £19.99) says aluminised in the bullets and also prints alloy steel, a stainless finish, and an aluminium frame. Quote the page you buy. Do not collapse that into one aluminium-tube claim. At 680 g it is a smaller job than a 30 cm galvanised kettle chimney. A little rust and a loose-feeling plastic handle show up in isolated reviews. Size matters more than the metal line. Weber’s 7416 on weber.com, £23.99, is aluminised context and not one of the eleven ASINs.

Stainless and heavy plain steel

The stainless chimneys here are the onlyfire pair: about £32.99 (2.8 kg of briquettes stated, 2.05 kg empty) and about £34.99 (3 kg stated, 34.5 cm high). Bullets name heat shields and metal side handles. Review counts are 33 and 17, against 985 on SA Products and 25,428 on the Weber compact. Stainless fits frequent cooks who store gear in the rain and will pay about double the mid band for a small sample. It does not make a handle cool. Gloves still belong on the pour. RIMLUFE at about £59.99 is heavy plain steel: a 2 mm shell and 2.5 mm bottom claimed, a stainless handle, a heat shield, no star line, and weight bullets that disagree (8 lb, 3.65 kg, 4.15 kg). Season it if the listing says so, and lift with two hands. That is bare steel, not stainless sheet.

Which family fits the job

Under about £13 with a large review pool, lean galvanised: SA Products or LIVIVO, title conflict included. A 57 cm kettle and two handles lean to powder-coated GFTIME. A portable kettle leans to the aluminised Weber 7447. Repeated seasons in the rain, at about £33 to £35, lean to onlyfire. Bare-steel care with no reviews is RIMLUFE. When title and field conflict, trust buyer photos over the marketing word. When stars differ at one price, trust the count on that ASIN. Capacity and handles, before metal, are on the buying guide.

Common questions

Is galvanised good enough for occasional UK barbecues?
Yes, if you store it dry and you will replace the tube or tolerate surface rust. Occasional cooks are who the under-£16 band in this capture is built for. Knock the ash out and do not leave it in the rain all winter.
When does stainless in this set make sense at £33 to £35?
Frequent use, outdoor storage, and a willingness to buy on tens of reviews rather than thousands. The onlyfire pair is the stainless option here, at about £32.99 and £34.99. A small sample is part of that price.
What does aluminised mean on the Weber compact?
Steel with an aluminium layer for reflectivity, not a solid aluminium tube. The 7447 bullets say aluminised, and the same listing still prints alloy steel, a stainless finish, and an aluminium frame.
Why do reviews say galvanised when the title says aluminium?
Titles are often copied from older templates. SA1294 is the clear case: the title says aluminium, the material field says alloy steel, and UK reviews say galvanised. Read the field and the critical reviews together.
Will a cheap galvanised tube rust if left outside?
Surface rust is likely over time if rain sits on it. Knock out the ash and store the tube under cover if you want it to last more than a season or two.
Does heavy plain steel behave like stainless?
No. RIMLUFE is thick bare steel with seasoning and oiling, not corrosion-free stainless sheet. This capture also has no star line for it, and the weight bullets do not agree.
