Watering can buying guide for litres, rose and fill

Updated: October 2026

A 10 litre title looks efficient until you lift it, and a 1 litre spout looks neat until you are back at the tap every two pots. This watering can buying guide takes the decision in order: litres for the job, the weight of that water, the rose, then whether the tap can reach the hole and whether the body is plastic or metal. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices captured on 15 October 2026, in the [watering can comparison](/hub/garden-watering/watering-can). Peter F. did not run a garden trial. Match the litres to the job

About 0.6 to 2 litres is the houseplant band: the FERRIS 1 litre at £6.49, the ANGIX at £7.10, and the MEETOZ 1.8 litre at £9.49. The English Garden puts houseplants under about 1.3 litres. Three to five litres suits patio pots and greenhouse shelves. The PHX Grove is 3.8 litres. Bamworld’s title says 3 litres and 1 gallon. Do not average those phrases. A garden round here is 6.5 litres: the Zuvo at £7.20, the Ward at £6.94, and the FERRIS 6.5 litre at £8.99. About 10 litres is the Geli title at £10.36, if you can carry it. That listing also says 2.7 gallons. Read it as a clash. The named pick is the best watering can page.

Add one kilogram per litre

One litre of water weighs one kilogram. Haws states that. The empty can is extra. A full Zuvo is over 6 kg of water plus 235 g. A full Geli, at the 10 litre title, is about 10 kg plus 380 g. A full 1 litre FERRIS is about 1 kg plus 80 g. If the path has steps, buy smaller or fill halfway. Halfway on a 10 litre can is a 5 litre carry. Ward reviews say a full 6.5 litre can needs two hands, and the handle can bend. Metal does not remove the sum. The PHX Grove is 748 g empty and the LONGRUN is 500 g, and you still add 1 kg per litre.

Choose the rose for the plants

A fine rose you can take off is for seedlings. The RHS turns the rose upwards. Which? found many supplied roses too coarse for seed trays. That is not a score for these ASINs. The Zuvo rose clicks on and off with no tools, and reviews say the push-fit can drop off. The Ward includes a fine rose and does not say it comes off. Mould flashing can stop it fitting. The FERRIS 6.5 litre lists a removable rose. The FERRIS 1 litre and the ANGIX do not itemise one. The MEETOZ nozzle leaks onto tabletops in reviews. The PHX Grove listing says one spout, and reviews describe two screw-on roses. The LONGRUN rose screws on. Rose off is a stream at the roots. A dribble from the join is a fault in the fit.

Check the fill and the body

The handle should not cover the filling hole, and a water butt needs a stand high enough for the can. The Ward’s opening is clear of the handle. The Zuvo’s wide opening is intended for a garden tap. Geli reviews say the handle can block a kitchen tap and some butt taps. Measure a low tap before you choose the tallest can. Plastic here is £6.49 to £11.99. Metal is the PHX Grove at £23.99 and the LONGRUN at £28.98. Empty either before a frost. The RHS says not to use butt water on seedlings. Ofwat still says you may water with a can, while the 2010 Order treats a hosepipe fill as hosepipe use. The LONGRUN’s 4.7 is six reviews. Frost and rust sit on plastic or galvanised.

What to open next

If the job is a kitchen tap and a dry windowsill, open the watering can for indoor plants and leave the 6.5 and 10 litre cans there. If you are stuck between a £7 plastic can and a £24 galvanised can, the material page keeps litres out of the argument. The comparison page still holds every price and every ASIN. This page does not replace that table.

Common questions

How many litres do I need for houseplants, a patio, or a border?
Use about 0.6 to 2 litres for houseplants, about 3 to 5 litres for patio pots and greenhouse shelves, 6.5 litres for a garden round, and about 10 litres for borders only if you can carry it. Bamworld prints 3 litres and 1 gallon together. Do not treat that pair as one converted size.
Do I need a fine rose, or is a spout enough?
You need a fine rose for seed and for a gentle spray. You need the rose off, or a can with no rose, for a stream at the roots. Which? found many roses too coarse for seed trays. Do not copy a Which? score onto these cans. The 1 litre FERRIS and ANGIX do not itemise a rose. The Zuvo, the FERRIS 6.5 litre, the MEETOZ, and the two metal cans do list a head you can remove.
Will the can fit under a water-butt tap?
Only if the handle leaves the hole clear and the stand holds the butt high enough. The Ward’s opening is not blocked by the handle. The Zuvo is described as fitting a garden tap. Geli reviews say the handle can block a kitchen tap and some butt taps. Measure the gap under your tap against the can’s height before you rely on a 10 litre fill.
Why does one listing say 10 litres and 2.7 gallons?
The Geli title says 10 litres and the specification capacity says 2.7 gallons. Both are printed. Do not turn 2.7 into imperial gallons, and do not add it to 10 litres. The same kind of clash appears on Bamworld (3 litres and 1 gallon), the MEETOZ (1.8 litres, 60 oz, and 1/2 gallon), and the PHX Grove (3.8 litres and 1 gallon, plus dimensions of 13 × 8 × 7 cm). Use the litre line you can check, and treat the other figure as a conflict.
Can I trust the star rating if the reviews describe a different size?
Not on its own. The FERRIS 1 litre and 6.5 litre files share review text, so a comment about a tiny can may not be about the 6.5 litre listing. ANGIX’s sample includes rose heads and larger cans, while the specification stays at 1 litre. The LONGRUN’s 4.7 is six reviews. Read the count, and read whether the comment names the size on the page you are buying.
