Garden hose spray gun buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You already have an outside tap, and you are not sure whether the missing piece is a spray gun or a whole new hosepipe. This garden hose spray gun buying guide takes the decision in order: whether a hosepipe use is banned where you live, whether the thread matches, and only then whether you need a gun for the pipe you have. Prices and star lines come from the ten amazon.co.uk listings in our [spray hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/spray-hose), captured in October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not run a garden trial. If your company has a temporary use ban, read [hosepipe ban and a spray gun](/hub/garden-watering/spray-hose/sub/spray-hose-hosepipe-ban) before you add anything to the basket.

Check the ban, then the tap

If watering a garden with a hosepipe is prohibited on your company's notice, a mist, a rose, or an expandable hose is still that use. The Environment Agency note for 2 to 8 October 2026, updated on 9 October 2026, listed bans for several English companies. Check the company that bills you, then come back to fittings. Hozelock's tap guide says UK outdoor taps are usually 3/4 inch BSP, with some older taps at 1/2 inch BSP. Garden hose thread, or GHT, is a different screw: 11.5 threads per inch against 14 for 3/4 inch BSP. They are not a direct fit. Forcing the collar risks a cross-thread. In this set, only the VOXON states a 3/4 inch BSP thread. The FANHAO states 3/4 inch GHT. The Flexi Hose bullets say the brass connectors fit typical outdoor taps in the US. 3/4 inch on its own is not enough. Measure the tap, name the standard, and only then choose the gun or the kit.

A gun if the pipe is already there

If a hose is already on the tap, you are buying a nozzle, a shut-off, and one pattern that will not strip compost off a seedling. You need a soft pattern for leaves and a harder one for a patio, plus a way to stop the flow while you walk to the next pot. Hozelock's own pattern page treats a jet as a cleaning spray and a fine rose or mist as the plant spray. The Multi-Jet title names cone, jet, fast fill, fine rose, and flat. The Hozelock Multi-Jet is the clip-on choice when the fittings are already Hozelock. It is plastic, 120 g, £20.20, and 4.4 from 15,414 reviews. The Ibergrif is £6.83 with a locking ring and no thread size, so universal still has to be tested on your connector. The Draper specs say a 1/2 inch barb. The Onarway specs say a 1/2 inch quick-connect. Skip a GHT or US-tap fitting unless you already own the adapter. Seat a washer before you blame the gun.

A kit only if you need the pipe

Buy an expandable hose only when you do not already have a pipe that reaches the beds. The Flexi Hose at £19.99 says 50 feet in the title and 30.48 m in the dimensions, and the bullets mention typical US outdoor taps. The XPendHoze at £20.99 matches 75 ft to 22.86 m, but the title says brass connectors and the bullets say composite alloy. Its star line is 3.5 from 114 reviews, the weakest in the set. The Yofidra at £28.99 says 100 feet, 100 ft (30 m), and 10 m. If a hose is already fitted, leave all three.

What to leave for later

Metal is knock resistance, not a lifetime you can read off the star line. Weight and frost sit on the metal or plastic spray gun page. A 4.7 from 262 reviews is a higher rating than a 4.4 from 15,414, and it is thinner evidence. Our scores follow that star line. If the notice still prohibits the use, the right result is a watering can.

Common questions

Do I need a spray gun or a new hose?
You need a gun if a hose already reaches the plants and you want a shut-off and a softer pattern than an open end. You need a kit only if you have no pipe, or the pipe you have is split or too short. In this set a gun starts at £6.83 and a kit starts at £19.99. Buying both, when one hose is already on the tap, pays twice for the nozzle.
Will a 3/4 inch spray gun fit a UK outside tap?
Often, and only when both sides are 3/4 inch BSP. Hozelock says that is the usual UK outdoor tap, with some older taps at 1/2 inch BSP. A listing that says 3/4 inch GHT, as the FANHAO does, is a different thread. Measure the outside diameter, or match a connector you already know fits, before you treat 3/4 inch as the answer.
What is the difference between BSP and GHT?
BSP at 3/4 inch is about 14 threads per inch. GHT is about 11.5 threads per inch. They look similar in a thumbnail and they do not screw together as a seal. The practical join is an adapter, not extra force on the collar. In this set the VOXON states BSP and the FANHAO states GHT.
Does the Hozelock Multi-Jet include the click connector?
Do not assume it does. The size field says spray gun only, and the included-components line is the gun itself. The bullets mention a quick-connect male connector. One review of HZ2676P0000 says the hose connectors are not in the package and have to be bought separately. If your hose end is bare, add a fitting to the order.
What should I check before I buy during a hosepipe ban?
Check whether your company has prohibited that hosepipe use, not whether the nozzle looks gentle. A mist setting and an expandable hose are still a hosepipe. Ofwat describes watering with a can or a bucket as the allowed alternative. If the use is prohibited, stop at the can. The product pages will still be there when the notice is lifted.
