How to install a pop-up sprinkler

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have chosen the heads, the pipe is still coiled in the shed, and the lawn looks too good to dig twice. How to install a pop-up sprinkler is a surface-first sequence: mark head-to-head spacing, assemble and flush on the grass, adjust arcs, then trench about 20–25 cm with low-point drains before you put the turf back. The [pop-up sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/pop-up-sprinkler) lists the amazon.co.uk heads. Sequence notes follow Gardena UK Sprinklersystem installation advice and UK merchant set-up guides. We did not dig a demo lawn. Plan head-to-head before you dig

Place each head so its throw meets the next head’s throw, not the fence. Wet edges should overlap. Circular rotors want clear corners. A rectangular pop-up wants its long axis on the strip. Keep sprays and rotors on separate zones. Gardena T (turbo) and S/SD (spray) families are not meant to share one pipe as a mixed shower. Mark the route from the tap or valve box to the farthest head, including the frost fall. Only then cut pipe. If the layout needs a break tank or a notice for a pump, get that advice before you open the turf. If the heads are not settled, use the pop-up sprinkler buying guide.

Assemble, flush, and adjust on the surface

Lay the pipe on the lawn, fit tees and elbows, and click the heads on without burying anything. Cap the open ends. Open the tap slowly and watch every joint. Flush until the water runs clear. Grit left in the line lodges in nozzles in the first week. Set arc and radius while you can still walk the wet patch. Look for dry corners, overspray on paving, and heads that stay up when pressure falls. A stuck riser on the surface is a short fix. The same fault under backfill is an afternoon. Keep the order as tap, then timer, then access point, then main pipe. When joints stay dry, mark the path and only then dig.

Dig, set flush, and protect from frost

Gardena UK points to a V-shaped trench about 20–25 cm deep. Set each lid flush with the finished lawn. A proud lid catches the mower. A sunken lid collects thatch. Slope laterals to low points and fit drain valves on gravel so they can open below about 0.2 bar. A height difference of roughly 2 m wants its own low point. Backfill without stones against the pipe, then replace the turf. Standing water in a shallow lateral freezes and splits fittings. Plan backflow protection under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Trade notes often treat low heads as needing more than a double-check valve. Before the first mains run in a dry summer, check whether a hosepipe ban is in force. A working head is not permission to run it.

First weeks and common faults

Walk the lawn after a cycle. A sticking head often has grit or thatch in the canister. Pull the filter if the model has one and flush again. Under-throw usually means too many heads on one zone, or soft pressure. A leaking thread needs PTFE tape or the seal for that ecosystem, not another turn that cracks the plastic. If a Gardena memory sector fails to return, check the head family and the pressure band. Call a professional for multi-zone solenoids, a shared supply, a steep slope, or a pump after a break tank that needs notification. The install is finished when a mower can pass, the drains empty after shut-off, and you know which valve isolates which zone.

Common questions

Do I test on the surface first?
Yes. Assemble, pressurise, flush, and adjust coverage on the grass. Dig only after the joints stay dry and the wet pattern looks right. A fault you can see on the lawn is a short repair. The same fault under backfill means opening the turf again.
How do I flush grit out?
Open flush points or temporary open ends and run water until it clears, before you lock the final nozzle settings. Grit left in the pipe blocks sprays and rotors alike. Do this on the surface, while the ends are still easy to reach.
Where do drain valves go?
At the low points on each lateral that can hold water after shut-off. Sit them on gravel so they can open when pressure falls. Published Gardena UK advice uses drains that open below about 0.2 bar. Skip them and the winter freeze risk rises, even after a mild November.
How far apart should heads be?
Far enough that throw meets throw, which is head-to-head spacing, and not so far that the middle stays dry. The metres follow the head’s real throw on your tap, not the carton alone. Time the pattern on the grass before you commit to the trench.
When do I adjust arc and radius?
On the surface, after the flush, then fine-tune once the heads sit flush in the turf. Large pattern changes after burial mean extra digging. Set the sector while you can still walk the wet edge and see paving that should stay dry.
