Oscillating sprinkler lawn coverage explained

Updated: 23 October 2026

The box says 300 m², your lawn is 80 m², and somehow the far end still stays dry. This page explains lawn sprinkler coverage in square metres for oscillating bars: what the manufacturer number means, how to measure your grass, why pressure and hose runs shrink throw, and how to prove the wet rectangle with tins before you trust a timer. Product cards stay on the [oscillating sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/oscillating-sprinkler). Peter F. checked the saved listings. There was no lab test.

What “up to X m²” really means

Coverage figures on oscillating sprinkler listings are maxima at favourable pressure, not a promise for every UK outdoor tap. Masseys and similar Hozelock advice treat the number as a ceiling on a long thin hose or a weak supply. Gardena Aqua S states 90–220 m². The Kärcher OS 5.320SV claims up to 320 m². WASH IT! cards claim up to 300 m² or 350 m². One STYDDI listing says up to 3,800 sq ft, about 350 m², which is still a listing claim. Reviewers sometimes see far less when pressure is modest. The largest figure does not automatically win.

Measure your lawn first

Pace or tape the length and width of the grass only. Multiply for approximate square metres. Hozelock’s lawn tips treat ordinary steps as a rough metre guide when you lack a tape. Ignore beds and patio in that figure. Compare the result with the rated band and leave headroom. A 120 m² lawn can suit a 90–220 m² bar, though a long 8 by 15 m strip may still need two placements because throw fails before the area maths does. If the rated maximum sits only slightly above the lawn, plan to move the unit.

Pressure, hose length, and diameter

Domestic mains pressure varies by street and by how many outlets are open indoors. Oscillating bars are water-motor devices. Low pressure means a short, weak fan even when the plastic adjusters are wide open. Hose length and bore cut flow further. UK hose guidance notes that longer runs and narrower tubes reduce flow compared with short, wider hose. That is a rule of thumb, not a percentage for your exact tap. A 12.5 mm hose that snakes 30 m around a shed delivers less at the bar than a short 19 mm run. Expanding hose often disappoints reviewers who expected box coverage. Solid hose usually feeds better. Multi-way connectors and half-open indoor taps steal the same head. Premium bars still shrink when the supply cannot feed them.

Buy bigger, or run two placements?

Buy a rating above your measured lawn and still test on day one, or buy a mid band such as Aqua S and plan two placements on a long rectangle. Several UK Aqua S reviewers already move it. Chasing 350 m² on a weak tap usually fails harder than moving a smaller bar twice. If the lawn is round, coverage maths will not save an oscillating pattern. Use the versus page linked below. The oscillating sprinkler buying guide puts shape and honest headroom before badge chasing. If oscillation sticks or nozzles clog, return the unit. A larger sticker does not fix a mechanical fault.

Prove it with tins or a jam jar

Place three to five shallow tins in a line from the bar to the far edge you care about. Run a timed session at the tap setting you will actually use. Even fill means the pattern is working. A dry far tin means throw is shorter than you hoped. Depth, not the printed area, sets run time. About 13 mm in a jar is the RHS rule of thumb when you water new lawns. The session steps are on how to use an oscillating sprinkler. If the rectangle is smaller but even, clean the filter and jets first. If the whole pattern is tiny, shorten the hose, remove splitters, then decide whether a second placement is cheaper than another ASIN.

Common questions

How do I measure my lawn in m²?
Length times width of the grass. Use a tape, or pace roughly a metre per step as a Hozelock-style estimate, then leave headroom against the rated band. Leave beds and patio out of the sum. A long thin strip can need two placements even when the area maths looks comfortable.
Why did coverage collapse on a long hose?
Friction and narrow bore reduce flow at the bar. A shorter hose, fewer connectors, and a solid line rather than an expanding one usually recover throw better than opening the tap into mist. Half-open indoor taps and multi-way splitters steal the same pressure.
Does half-inch hose matter?
Narrower hose and long runs both cut flow compared with shorter, wider tube. A 12.5 mm line around a shed is a common culprit. Exact loss depends on your supply. Treat diameter and length as the first checks when coverage disappoints, before you replace the bar.
How do I test real coverage?
Set tins or jam jars across the pattern, run a timed session, and compare depths. Mark the wet edge with canes if you need a visual for two placements. Even depth inside a shorter rectangle is a working pattern. An empty far jar is a throw limit, not a timer problem.
Why are some listings in square feet?
Imported or US-oriented copy. Convert only as a rough order of magnitude. 3,800 sq ft is about 350 m². Then ignore the precision and test your tap. An imperial headline is not a surveyed UK result for your hose and pressure.
Patchy wetness: pressure or clogged jets?
If the whole rectangle is short, suspect pressure and hose. If stripes or dead nozzles appear inside a smaller wet area, clean the filter and jets first. A mechanical stick or a missing end nozzle is a return, not a reason to buy a larger square-metre claim.
