Gardena submersible pump buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

A rain butt, a paddling pool and a muddy cellar look like one search: a Gardena submersible pump. They are not one pump. This Gardena submersible pump buying guide is the order to use before you compare prices. Name the job, then the plug and the extras the price leaves out, and only then the litres per hour. The rows, including the amazon.co.uk prices captured on 21 October 2026, sit on the [Gardena submersible pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/gardena-submersible-pump). Peter F. compared those listings and the Gardena UK pages. There is no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Four jobs, not one pump

A barrel pump is for stored rain and hose pressure. A clear-water pump is for a clean pool, on the claim of little water left behind. A dirty-water pump is built to pass grit. An 18 V pump is the cordless branch, and the battery is separate. The figures are maxima. Gardena UK lists the 4000/1 at 400 W, 4,000 litres per hour, 1.3 bar and 13 metres. The 20000 family is 20,000 litres per hour, 0.9 bar and 9 metres. You do not get both peaks at once. Rain stays on the barrel branch. A clean pool stays on clear water. Grit stops on dirty water or the 2-in-1, which is set out on clear water or dirty water.

What the amazon prices leave out

None of the kept listings includes a full hose. Screwfix lists the 4000/1 at £79.99 and states that the hose is not supplied. The 20000 models use 25 mm and 38 mm connections, which may not match your reel. The 18 V tank pump was £82.95 without a battery, and the 18 V clear-water pump was £68.95 without one. UK mains are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. B0DNFSZMT8 puts 09016-47 in the title and 09016-28 in the technical field. B0DMFB5QJQ splits 09017-47 and 09017-28 the same way. The 2-in-1 agrees on 09018-28. Bloomling calls 09016-47 a European plug. A Schuko-only plug is a return, not a travel-adapter job.

A shortlist for each job

For a butt and a hose, the 4000/1 is £79.99, with 4.7 from 66 reviews, a small sample beside a drainage pump with thousands of reviews. Reach and a hosepipe ban are on the Gardena water butt pump page. Clear-water 20000, B0DNFSZMT8, is £50.99, with a 1 mm claim and a start from 10 mm. Dirty-water 20000, B0DMFB5QJQ, is £55 for grit to 35 mm. The 2-in-1, B0DMFCXS9Z, is £59.99 and prints both figures. Those three have three to five reviews. Do not rank them on stars. With no socket, the 14602-55 is £82.95, battery extra. The FOTING 900 W at £46.99, with 4.2 from 2,607 reviews, is the drainage alternative. Its plug is unstated.

Before you plug it in

BS 7671 Regulation 411.3.3, as the IET explains it, requires a 30 mA RCD for outdoor mobile equipment up to 32 A. Use a socket that already has that protection. A new garden circuit is notifiable under Part P. Gardena UK caps the liquid at 35 °C. IPX8 on the 4000/1 is the pump body, not an 18 V battery and not a switch that must stay dry. Fit the hose, prove the float, and stay with the pump if you lock it on. That sequence is on how to use a Gardena submersible pump.

Common questions

Is a water-butt pump the same as a dirty-water pump?
No. The 4000/1 is specified at 1.3 bar and 13 metres for stored rain. The dirty-water 20000 is specified at 0.9 bar and 9 metres, with a 35 mm particle passage. One is for hose pressure from a butt. The other is for grit in flood or pond water. A drainage pump on a rose will feel weaker, and a barrel pump in sandy water can clog the filter.
Do I need 20,000 litres per hour to water the garden?
Not for a hose from a butt. Gardena's 20,000 litre figure belongs to the 20000 drainage family, and it is a maximum, not the flow at 9 metres of head. The 4000/1 is listed at 4,000 litres per hour and 1.3 bar. That is the pressure side of the range. A sprinkler that expects mains-tap pressure can still disappoint on 1.3 bar.
Does the box include a hose?
No kept listing in this set includes a full hose. Screwfix states that the 4000/1 hose is not supplied. The 20000 models need a 25 mm or 38 mm connection, which may not match the hose already on the reel. Budget for hose and fittings before you treat the title price as the working cost.
Is the plug a UK 13 A plug?
A UK socket needs a BS 1363 plug. The 2-in-1 listing agrees on article 09018-28. The clear-water and dirty-water amazon titles use 09016-47 and 09017-47 while the technical fields say the -28 numbers. Bloomling calls 09016-47 a European plug. Check the photos and the parcel. Do not rely on the words UK plug in a title that disagrees with its part number.
Is the 18 V price the price to get water moving?
No. Both Gardena 18 V solos in this capture are sold without a battery: £82.95 for the tank pump and £68.95 for the clear-water pump. A battery you already own changes that sum. A battery you still have to buy does not appear in those shelf prices, and we do not invent one. Compare them with a mains pump only after that extra is in the basket.
