How to set Gardena AquaZoom

Updated: 23 October 2026

The bar is already on the grass, the hose is connected, and the first burst either puddles at the ends or dies before the fence. This page is how to set Gardena AquaZoom, and the simpler Aqua throw dial, so the wet rectangle matches the lawn before you leave the tap running. It is not a ranking. Product choice sits on the [Gardena oscillating sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/gardena-oscillating-sprinkler). Peter F. checked the saved listings. There was no lab test. Connect and place the bar

Fit a UK click connector so the washer seats cleanly. A crooked washer is a common drip at the inlet before any nozzle is to blame. Lay the sled on level grass inside the lawn edges, not on the patio edge looking almost right. Point the bar so the sweep runs along the long side of a rectangular plot. Peg or weight a light Aqua sled if soft ground lets it creep. Review themes in this set often call the plastic light when it wanders. Run a short test burst with the tap partly open. Watch where the first and last jets land. If water hits paving, fence boards or the neighbour’s border on that first pass, close the pattern before you talk about run time. Placement beats buying a bigger claim band when the sled simply sat too close to hard landscaping.

Throw, width, flow and one-side

On AquaZoom models in this set (S, compact and M), Gardena’s UK pages describe separate controls for range, width, flow and one-side watering, plus soft nozzles you wipe rather than poke. Set throw so the far edge of the grass gets wet without climbing the fence. Set width so the near edge stops short of the path. Use flow to calm a harsh jet on a strong tap, or to keep oscillation moving when pressure is modest, without opening the tap so hard that the sled skates. One-side watering is for a lawn that only needs water on one flank of the bar, for example beside a dry patio. Shut the side that faces the slabs instead of moving the whole unit every few minutes. Aqua S, M and L are simpler. You mainly adjust throw, with a metal filter and a cleaning needle in the box rather than soft Zoom nozzles. Width is listed as a maximum on those Aqua rows, not a fine 3 m floor like AquaZoom. If you bought Aqua because you only needed a throw dial, do not expect Zoom-style one-side precision from the same sled. Work one control at a time. Change throw, test five seconds, then width, then flow. Changing everything at once makes it hard to see which slider fixed the overspray. Series choice, if you have not bought yet, sits on the buying guide.

When coverage falls short

If the far strip stays dry, check the hose before you blame the bar. Kinks, a long 12.5 mm run, a splitter, or a half-closed tap all cut pressure at the head. Listed coverage is a maximum that shrinks with weak pressure. The same honesty belongs on first use. Move the bar halfway down a long lawn and run a second placement rather than opening every dial to the stop. Puddles at the reversal ends are a known oscillating-bar behaviour. The head pauses briefly as it turns, so those strips get a little more water. Gardena’s even-watering guidance for new seed is to move or rotate the unit between sessions so the wetter ends do not always sit on the same line. For an established lawn, that is also a reason not to leave the bar on one spot for an afternoon just to be sure. If oscillation stalls, rinse the inlet filter and clear the nozzles before you assume the gearbox has failed. Grit and hard-water scale show up often in review complaints across this category.

Clean the filter and nozzles

For Aqua bars, remove and rinse the metal inlet filter and use the cleaning needle on blocked jets when the pattern goes stripy. For AquaZoom, wipe the soft nozzles and rinse the filter the same way the Gardena UK product pages describe. Do this after dusty storage or when one side of the sweep suddenly weakens. A two-minute clean beats buying a new bar because half the nozzles silted up in July. Store the unit drained. Leaving it wet in a shed invites the next season’s first burst to spit grit straight back into the jets you just cleared.

How long to run

Set the rectangle to the grass first. Only then decide time. The RHS jam-jar rule of thumb for new lawns is about 13 mm of water in a straight-sided jar placed on the turf. When the jar shows that depth, you have a usable session length for that placement. Established lawns are a different story. RHS summer lawn advice is to leave established turf rather than keep it lush with sprinklers, and a temporary use ban may forbid the run altogether. Use a timer only as a convenience after the pattern is correct, not as a substitute for watching the first session. If your supplier’s notice bans hosepipe and sprinkler use on gardens, no slider setting makes a mains oscillating bar legal. Read the sprinkler hosepipe ban page before any long run on the mains. When watering is allowed, prefer morning or evening sessions that limit waste to wind and heat, still inside the pattern you set.

Common questions

How do I set throw and width?
On AquaZoom, use the range slider for how far the jet travels and the width control for how wide the rectangle is. On Aqua, expect mainly throw adjustment, with width listed as a maximum. Test in short bursts after each change, one control at a time, so you can see which slider fixed the overspray.
What is one-side watering for?
It shuts one flank of the sweep so you can water grass beside a path or patio without soaking the hard surface. It is an AquaZoom-family control on these listings, not the simple Aqua story. Shut the side that faces the slabs instead of moving the sled every few minutes.
How do I clean the filter and nozzles?
Rinse the inlet filter. On Aqua, clear jets with the cleaning needle. On AquaZoom, wipe the soft nozzles. Clean when the pattern goes uneven or after dusty storage, and store the unit drained so the next season does not spit grit back into the jets.
Why is the spray weak?
Pressure at the head is usually low: a long thin hose, kinks, splitters, or a soft outdoor tap. Move the bar for a second placement before you assume you bought the wrong size. Listed square metres are a maximum, not a result on every UK tap.
How long should I leave it on?
For new turf, time a session with a jam jar to about 13 mm depth as an RHS rule of thumb. For established lawns, follow RHS restraint and any temporary use ban. Never use run time to fix a pattern that already hits the fence.
How do I use the jam-jar test?
Place a straight-sided jar on the lawn inside the pattern, run the sprinkler, and stop when the water depth reaches about 13 mm. That duration is your guide for that placement and pressure. It is a rule of thumb for new lawns, not a target for keeping established turf lush.
Why are the ends wetter than the middle?
The bar pauses at each reversal, so the ends collect more water. Shift or rotate the unit between sessions on new seed so the same lines are not always the wettest. On an established lawn, that pause is a reason not to leave one spot running all afternoon.
