How to set up a garden shower

Updated: 22 October 2026

The pole is in the box, the outdoor tap is on the wall, and you want it standing before the next hot afternoon. How to set up a garden shower, for a cold spike, is a firm patch of ground, the hose you already use, and a plan to empty it before a frost. A hot-and-cold column is a different job, and a new buried supply is where a plumber takes over. Which type to buy sits on the [garden shower buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/garden-shower/sub/garden-shower-buying-guide), and the four listings sit on the [garden shower comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-shower). Set a spike on the lawn

Pick a spot where the spray falls on gravel or grass, not back into the house or onto a neighbour’s path. Boni Shop’s notes for the Cellfast ERGO 53-470 are four moves: place the shower, push the spike in, connect the hose, and set the jet. You do not need a power tool. Open the tap gradually, then use the valve on the shower, where the listing has one. The Gardena solo, listed at 200 g with the head adjustable up to 207 cm, is the same idea. The Cellfast is listed at 100 g, with five settings. Set the jet while you are still beside the head. Homebuilding quotes a supplier putting ordinary outdoor-shower pressure around 1.5 to 3.0 bar. That figure is the interview, not a measurement of these listings. If the pole leans as soon as the water is on, do not keep forcing the same hole.

When the spike will not stand

Soft lawn is the usual failure. Saved Cellfast reviews include poles that needed side stays. Saved Gardena reviews include the pole stood in a pot or a parasol base. That gives the 200 g spike a heavier foot. It does not turn the shower into a deck fitting, and an empty plastic pot will still blow over. If there is no soil, stop trying to spike through decking. The YWBL-WH kit does not name its connector, so fixing it is not a ten-minute hose job. The CAPRYSE is the other route when you already have hot and cold feeds. Saved reviews say that column took about an hour and needed extra anchors on a loose lawn. Standing height is not stated. Anchors are not a substitute for pipes.

Fittings, a hot hose, and leaks

The hose you already use joins a hose-union tap. The Tap Guide’s point for that tap is a double check valve, so a submerged hose end cannot pull used water back. The Gardena and the Cellfast are hose showers. The CAPRYSE uses G1/2 inlets and G1/2 to G3/8 adapters. G1/2 is a plumbing thread, not a garden-hose click. A hose left in the sun holds a short slug of hot water. Run it onto the ground until the water is the cooler supply temperature, then stand under the head. That slug is not a solar tank. Children should wait until you have run it off. Saved Cellfast reviews include leaks at joints and a cracked housing. Check the washer, then open the tap slowly. Saved Gardena reviews include heads that clog on gritty well or pump water. Rinse the nozzles before you force a pin into every hole.

Winter drain, and where a plumber takes over

Drain the shower before a frost. Gardena states no frost protection for this solo. Disconnect the hose even when the tap is sold as frost-proof, tip the pole so the head and the valve empty, and store the shower off the ground. A hosepipe restriction is a separate question on the garden shower hosepipe ban page, and it does not change this drain. A plumber takes over for a new buried hot pipe, for soapy water into a drain, or for backflow beyond the outdoor tap’s double check valve. A clean rinse of grass can fall on the lawn. If the CAPRYSE feeds are already there, fitting the column can stay a careful afternoon. If you would be cutting into the house supply, stop. Choosing between the two spikes is on the best garden shower page.

Common questions

Do I need tools for a spike?
For a cold spike on a lawn, the ordinary sequence needs no power tool. Place it, push the spike into firm soil, connect the hose, open the tap gradually, and set the jet. A mallet is a temptation on hard ground and a good way to bend a thin spike. If the ground will not take the spike by hand, use a heavier base or a different mount rather than forcing it.
What if the lawn is too soft?
Add side stays, or stand a light pole in a pot or a parasol base, which is what saved reviews describe for these spikes. The Cellfast is listed at 100 g and the Gardena at 200 g, so neither is a heavy column. If the lawn is still too soft after a stay, wait for drier ground. Do not spike through decking to find a firmer layer underneath.
Which end joins a UK tap?
The hose joins a hose-union outdoor tap, ideally one with a double check valve. The spike then joins that hose. G1/2 threads are for a plumbing mixer such as the CAPRYSE, together with the G1/2 to G3/8 adapters in that listing. They do not click onto a standard garden hose. Match the box in front of you to the tap you actually have.
Why is the first water from the hose scalding?
A hose left in the sun heats the water sitting in it. That first slug can be much hotter than the tap, and it clears once fresh water runs through. Run the hose onto the ground until the water cools before anyone stands under the head. The spike has not heated the supply. Only the water that was trapped in the sunny hose was hot.
The head dribbles or clogs. What did reviewers do?
Saved reviews describe grit in the Gardena head, especially on well or pump water, and leaks at Cellfast joints. Rinse the head, check the washer, and reseat the connector. A cracked housing is a replacement, not a repair you should improvise. If the spray only throws forward, the Cellfast listing does not offer a tilt adjustment to correct that.
Can I fix it to decking?
A spike is the wrong mount for bare decking. Reviewers’ pots and parasol bases are workarounds that still need weight and a surface that will not let them slide. A wall kit needs a wall and a named connector, which the YWBL listing does not give. A column needs anchors and, for the CAPRYSE, hot and cold feeds. Decking screws alone are not in these instructions.
What do I do in October?
Disconnect the hose, empty the head and the valve, and store the shower before a frost. Gardena states no frost protection, and a frost-proof tap does not protect water left in the hose. October is the month to do that in much of the UK, and earlier if a frost is forecast. The same drain applies if you are putting the shower away for a hosepipe restriction.
