19mm garden hose buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have typed 3/4 inch because the outside tap looks large, and the results mix a heavy builder's hose with a short expandable. A 19mm garden hose buying guide has one job before any brand: decide the bore, the length, and the connector. The 3/4 inch mark on a tap nut is not a 19 mm hole. Updated on 21 October 2026, this page uses the kept amazon.co.uk listings and public UK guides. We did not lab-test a hose. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. When those three choices are made, compare listings on the [garden hose 3/4 inch comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-3-4-inch).

What 3/4 inch means on a UK hose

On a British outside tap, 3/4 inch is usually the BSP thread, not the hole inside the hose. Hozelock's tap guide treats 3/4 inch BSP as the common UK outdoor tap. Their 2175 tap connector belongs to a system whose hose ends are for 12.5 mm and 15 mm hose, not for a 19 mm wall. Faithfull and Vartco state a 19 mm bore. Gardena Liano is titled 3/4 inch and prints an outside diameter of 21 mm, not a stated 19 mm bore. The expandable hoses use 3/4 inch for the connector. Flexi Hose's bullet mentions US taps, and Lukiegale's bullet mentions UK tap adaptors. Neither bullet is a bore.

Length and weight

Start at the tap you will actually use and measure to the furthest point you water, then add a little slack for corners. Gardena's UK hose page groups lengths as 10–15 m, 20–25 m, and 30 m plus. BBC Gardeners' World's 2026 hose guide says measure from the tap and do not buy spare length you will trip over. ManoMano's UK buying guide draws a shop line: a hose over about 25 m wants about 19 mm if you are trying to hold flow at the far end, and a 50 m coil of 19 mm hose needs a cart. That weight trade-off is the 1/2 vs 3/4 garden hose page.

Connectors that match the wall

The hose ends that sit with a normal Hozelock 3/4 inch tap connector grip 12.5 mm and 15 mm hose. Push a 19 mm wall into that tail and the fitting lets go when you open the tap, even when the nut is tight. If the hose states 19 mm, budget for a 19 mm tail as well as a tap connector for the thread you measured. An expandable sold on a 3/4 inch nut is the connector, and the bore is still the narrow tube inside. How the washer and the tail go together is how to connect a 3/4 hose to an outside tap.

What the bar figure is not

A bar number on a listing is a claim about the pipe, usually a working pressure or a burst pressure. Burst is not the pressure your water company supplies. Ofwat's household figure is a minimum of 0.7 bar in the communication pipe. The Faithfull listing shows the muddle on one product. One field says 10 bar and a bullet says 40 bar. Those two figures cannot both be the pressure at your outside tap. BBC Gardeners' World's 2026 guide says do not use an expandable hose on a pressure washer.

Checklist before you compare listings

Look for a stated internal bore, and choose 19 mm only if flow is the limit you are solving. A 3/4 inch connector or a tap-adaptor bullet does not state that bore. Measure from the outside tap and buy a length near that run. Match the tail to the wall: a 12.5 mm or 15 mm click fitting is the wrong tail for a stated 19 mm hose. Read any bar number as a pipe claim, separate from Ofwat's 0.7 bar floor. The best 3/4 inch garden hose page then names which kept listing matches the job. This page does not rank them.

Common questions

Does 3/4 inch on the box mean the hose is 19 mm?
No. On a UK outside tap, 3/4 inch usually names the BSP thread the connector screws onto. Hozelock treats that size as nominal. In this amazon.co.uk set, Faithfull and Vartco state 19 mm. Gardena Liano is titled 3/4 inch with an outside diameter of 21 mm. The expandable listings use 3/4 inch for the connector.
How long a hose should I buy for a medium UK garden?
Measure from the tap to the furthest bed and add a little slack. Gardena's UK page, as their experience, points at 10–15 m, 20–25 m, or 30 m plus. A 50 m coil is spare length unless the tape is already near 50 m. ManoMano's guide adds that a long 19 mm coil wants a cart.
Will my old Hozelock gun fit a 19 mm hose?
Only if the tail is made for that wall. The hose ends sold with Hozelock's 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch tap connector are for 12.5 mm and 15 mm hose. A 19 mm wall in a 12.5 mm tail is the joint that blows off, even when the tap nut is correct. Buy a 19 mm tail for a stated 19 mm hose.
Is a higher bar number a better hose?
Not by itself. A bar figure is a working or burst claim about the pipe. Ofwat's 0.7 bar minimum is the floor in the communication pipe. The Faithfull listing prints both 10 bar and 40 bar, so those two lines cannot both describe your tap. A higher burst bullet does not make an expandable hose suitable for a pressure washer.
Can I use an expandable hose with a pressure washer?
No. BBC Gardeners' World's 2026 hose guide says not to use an expandable hose on a pressure washer. A bar number on the garden listing does not change that advice. Use an expandable, if you buy one, on a garden tap.
