A 15m garden hose buying guide has to settle the length the listing means, and the thread that will screw onto a UK tap, before price is worth comparing. Fifty feet is 15.24 m, which is why titles say 15 m and 50 ft together, yet the coil in the packet is often much shorter until pressure stretches it. Peter F. used those listings, Hozelock's UK tap-connector page, BBC Gardeners' World, and DIY Gardening's expandable-hose notes. There was no lab test. What 15 m and 50 ft mean on the listing

Fifty times 0.3048 m is 15.24 m, so a 50 ft title claims about 15 m, not a second hose. On an expanding hose that figure is usually the length under pressure. DIY Gardening notes that this type can reach up to about three times its empty length, and that the stretch falls if the far end is left open. BBC Gardeners' World's advice is to measure the run you actually water. Walk the route: tap to the furthest bed, then around the car if you wash it at home, plus a metre or two of slack. If the tape already reads 16 m at the back fence, 15 m is the wrong product.

Fittings that match a UK tap

A UK outside tap is commonly a 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch BSP thread. Hozelock's 2175 connector is sold for both, which is the pair to look for. Yofidra's bullets describe 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch metal fittings. Jsdoin lists 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch ABS connectors, plus three washers. KOBAZ, the non-expanding hose, states a 3/4 inch BSP male adapter down to 1/2 inch BSP. HmiL-U states 1/2 inch BSP brass, and the page claims the connectors suit 99 percent of UK taps. That is a seller sentence, not a survey. Flexi Hose says the brass connectors fit typical outdoor taps in the US, and does not name 3/4 inch BSP.

Pressure, layers and a gun

Bar figures here are seller text. Flexi Hose, Jsdoin and HmiL-U state 12 bar. Yofidra states 6 bar. KOBAZ states 35 bar. Lukiegale and Yiting give no maximum in the technical table. A household tap is not a pressure-washer lance, and DIY Gardening treats the washer outlet as the wrong place for a stretch hose. Which? has written that expandable hoses are less durable than standard hoses. Flexi Hose's title names an eight-pattern gun, and several others name ten. KOBAZ includes no gun. If the hose must stay 15 m with the tap on, KOBAZ is the other construction, on the expandable hose versus a normal hosepipe page.

When 15 m is the wrong length

A terrace and a nearby car can sit inside 15 m. A long side return often will not. Seventy-five feet is about 22.9 m, a different product from the 15 m you measured. HmiL-U is the caution in this set. The title says 50 ft, a bullet stops at 30 ft, and a review measured roughly 15 to 18 ft. This page does not name a winner. The best 15 m expandable garden hose page does.

Common questions

Is 50 ft the same as 15 m?
Fifty feet is 15.24 m, so a 50 ft title is a 15 m claim to the nearest usual round number. On an expanding hose it is the stated length under pressure, not the dry coil. Yofidra prints about 17 ft empty. Both Flexi Hose pages also show 30.48 m in the dimensions, which does not match 50 ft. Buy the expanded length you measured, and check a conflicting dimension line against the box.
Should you measure the empty hose or the expanded hose?
Measure the garden, then compare that distance with the expanded length on the listing. The empty length tells you how small the hose is in the cupboard. It does not tell you whether it will reach the bed once the gun is open. If the page never states the dry length, you do not know the coil size. Measure the run, and leave spare metres you will only drag around.
Will it fit a UK outside tap?
Several listings name 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch fittings, the pair Hozelock sells a tap connector for. Flexi Hose's bullets refer to typical US outdoor taps and do not state 3/4 inch BSP. Reviewers report a screw fit on an outside tap, which is still not a thread specification. Check the tap you have. A kitchen tap is a separate problem, as one KOBAZ review found.
Do you need both 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch adapters?
You need the size that matches the tap, plus a spare washer. Yofidra, Jsdoin and Lukiegale include both common outside-tap threads. You can skip the spare size if you already know the tap is 3/4 inch BSP and the hose states that size. The wrong thread will cross-thread rather than seal, so the extra fitting only helps when it is the one on your wall.
Is 12 bar better than 6 bar for a garden tap?
Twelve bar is a higher seller maximum than 6 bar. It is not a lab result, and a normal outside tap does not run at either figure the way a washer lance does. Yofidra states 6 bar at £15.98. Flexi Hose states 12 bar at £19.99. KOBAZ states 35 bar and does not expand. Read the number as a ceiling the seller will print, not as proof of a longer life.
Is 15 m enough for a terrace and a car on the drive?
It is enough when the tape from the tap, around the terrace and to the car, stays inside about 15 m with a little slack. A car at the far end of a long drive can use the whole length before a back bed. Walk it once before you assume one title covers both jobs. If the tape is already past 15 m, a longer stated length is the honest buy.
