Water timer hosepipe ban UK

Updated: October 2026

A dry summer and a dual-outlet timer on the outdoor tap do not add up to a private exemption. This water timer hosepipe ban UK page explains what a Temporary Use Ban usually covers, why a schedule does not legalise a sprinkler, and what still has to come from your water company’s live notice. It is not legal advice. When watering is allowed, start with the [2 zone water timer buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/2-zone-water-timer/sub/2-zone-water-timer-buying-guide). The matrix is the [2 zone water timer comparison](/hub/garden-watering/2-zone-water-timer). Peter F. updated this on 21 October 2026 from legislation.gov.uk, Water UK, and supplier notices. What a Temporary Use Ban actually restricts

Section 76 of the Water Industry Act 1991 lets a water undertaker restrict specified uses of water. The Water Use (Temporary Bans) Order 2010 includes using a hosepipe to water a garden, and its definition can cover water drawn through a hosepipe from a container, not only a live tap. A Temporary Use Ban, often still called a hosepipe ban, targets discretionary outdoor use named in the undertaker’s notice, such as garden hosepipes, sprinklers, and washing a private car with a hose. Cans filled at the tap, and butts used by hand, are often treated differently. Only the current notice for your postcode decides that.

Why a timer alone is not an exemption

A 2 zone water timer opens and closes valves on a clock. It does not change the legal character of the water path. If the notice bans a hosepipe or sprinkler for the garden, an automatic schedule does not create a lawful class. The timer still delivers the restricted use. It only removes the person from the garden. Rain delay, a child lock, a brass inlet, Zigbee control, and a high amazon.co.uk star line do not answer the ban question. During a ban, ask whether the delivery method itself is permitted. A spray or jet across the lawn is still no under a typical Temporary Use Ban, with or without a dual-outlet body.

When a drip system may be excepted

Some undertakers publish limited exceptions for drip or trickle irrigation. Thames Water’s hosepipe-ban material has described drip or trickle that meets several conditions together: a timer, a pressure-reducing valve, and water delivered to the soil without spray, jet, mist, or runoff. That is one company’s example, not a national standard you can paste onto another undertaker. A sprinkler, oscillating bar, or mist line on a timer is not drip under that wording. A soaker that still throws spray can fail the direct-to-soil test. Missing one condition, such as no pressure-reducing valve, can take you outside the exception even if a timer is fitted. Recheck when the ban is extended or lifted.

Check your own water company

The ban is set by the water undertaker for your supply area, not by amazon.co.uk. Water UK’s hosepipe-ban pages help you find who supplies your postcode. Then open that company’s own temporary-ban page. A snapshot of measures in early 2026 is historical context only. If you rent, the notice still binds the supply. A landlord’s preference does not override the undertaker. On a boundary, use the name on the bill. Silence on timers is not permission. The general hosepipe and sprinkler prohibitions apply unless an exception is written.

Backflow and permanent systems

A hose-union outdoor tap is a fittings issue under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 as they apply in England and Wales, with related rules elsewhere in the UK. Water Regs UK guidance on hose-union taps is about backflow into drinking water, not about Temporary Use Bans. A dual-zone timer is not a double check valve. Permanent irrigation into the mains, buried pop-ups, and installs near ponds can need notice or a professional. When watering is lawful again, use the how to set a 2 zone water timer page for a watched first cycle.

Common questions

Does a water timer make a hosepipe legal in a ban?
No. The timer schedules the same hosepipe or sprinkler use the notice usually restricts. Only an exception written by your undertaker can change that. A brass inlet or a high star line does not rewrite the notice.
What is a Temporary Use Ban?
A restriction made under the Water Industry Act 1991 using categories set out in the Water Use (Temporary Bans) Order 2010, published by your water company for outdoor uses such as garden hosepipes and sprinklers.
What does Thames allow for drip systems?
Where Thames publishes exception wording for drip or trickle, it has required conditions such as a timer, a pressure-reducing valve, and direct-to-soil delivery without spray or runoff. Read the live notice. Do not rely on this summary alone.
Does a sprinkler on a timer qualify as drip?
No. A spray or jet pattern is not drip or trickle under typical exception language. An oscillating bar or a mist line on a clock is still a spray, not a soil-level drip.
Do all water companies share the same exception?
No. Each undertaker’s notice controls. Never copy Thames wording onto another company’s area. Recheck when a ban is extended or lifted, because exception text can change with the notice.
What about watering cans and water butts?
Hand watering from cans or stored rainwater is often treated differently from a pressurised hosepipe, but only your current notice decides. Check before you assume a butt or a can is outside the ban.
Who do I check for my postcode?
Your water bill names the undertaker. Water UK’s hosepipe-ban pages help you find company links. Then read that company’s live temporary-ban notice, not an old national list.
What if my system is permanent or near a pond?
Treat it as a fittings job, and possibly a professional one. A tap timer does not settle backflow or abstraction questions. Settle those with the undertaker and a qualified plumber before you compare inlets.
