How to install a 12V water pump

Updated: October 2026

The pump is out of the box, and the first hour decides whether it primes or chatters itself to death. This is how to install a 12V water pump of the diaphragm type in this set: keep a non-waterproof body dry, fit a strainer on the inlet, fuse to the amp figure on your model, and prime before you blame the motor. The twelve listings differ on the [12V pressure water pump comparison](/hub/garden-watering/12v-pressure-water-pump). The Products Compared editorial team used the UK listings plus Camper Happy, Barrons and a Shurflo manual for the shared steps, on 20 October 2026. Mount it dry, and head down if it is vertical

These pumps are not bilge pumps. The Pindex washer kit is not waterproof: the inlet pipe goes in the bucket and the body stays dry. Camper Happy tells you not to mount the pump on a vertical bulkhead with the motor face down. Shurflo's Lo-Flo 105 manual says the same: if the pump is vertical, put the pump head down so a leak does not run into the motor. Do not drop the pump into the butt or the tank. The Seaflo can be mounted above the tank because it is self-priming, within a listed lift of 4 feet. That is not an invitation to submerge it. Seaflo reviewers found extra vibration when the screws were too tight, and the rubber feet come off. Flow and ports are on the buying guide.

Strainer, suction and a prime

Air in the suction hose is why a new pump spins and moves nothing. Fill the inlet before the first start. The washer kit claims self-priming and then tells you to put water in the inlet and push the air out. VerRich and VeYocilk print 1.5 m of suction. The 11.3 L/min Pindex prints 1.8 m. The Seaflo prints 4 feet, about 1.2 m. If the pump sits higher than that, it will not pull. A 70 m line on the VeYocilk is not the suction figure. Fit a strainer on the inlet. VerRich recommends 80 mesh and does not include one. REEPLAR and both larger Pindex pumps put a filter in the box. Keep the suction hose short and straight. A high loop full of air is a second pump you did not mean to install. Whether a butt is allowed under a ban is on the water-butt page.

Fuse to this pump, not to a diagram you found

The amp figures in this set are not one number. The Seaflo listing says 4.0 A maximum. Both VerRich pumps say 5 A. The 11.3 L/min Pindex says 2.8–7.5 A. The 20.8 L/min Pindex says 8 A and a maximum of 12 A. A Shurflo 105 manual specifies a 5 A fuse for that Shurflo, not for a 12 A Pindex. Read the label on the unit in your hand, and fit a fuse at that maximum, close to the battery, on the positive lead. If the only power source is the VerRich UK adaptor, you are on 230 V at the plug and 12 V at the pump. Do not cut it off to hard-wire the pump unless you know the supply you are joining.

When it chatters or runs hot

A pressure-switch pump that clicks every few seconds is usually seeing a tiny leak, a dripping tap, or no accumulator. Camper Happy fits an accumulator, and a check valve if a water heater can push hot water back. The 20.8 L/min Pindex is the case where reviewers want an expansion tank, and it is not in the box. Duty cycle is model-specific. VerRich says 30–60 minutes, then a rest. The 20.8 L/min Pindex says not to run dry for more than 10 minutes. Seaflo's 21-series page says that family can run dry. Do not copy one brand's permission onto another. If the body is too hot to hold, stop and look for a leak. Micro-switched taps are on the caravan page. Call a fitter if the pipe can reach the drinking supply or a mains top-up has no air gap.

Common questions

How do I prime it?
Fill the inlet hose until water, not air, reaches the pump, then start it with the outlet open so the air can leave. The washer kit states that step even though it also claims to be self-priming. One buyer had no flow until the pickup line was filled. If the pump sits higher than the suction figure on your listing, about 1.2–1.8 m where these pages print it, priming will not fix the height.
Can the pump sit in the butt?
No. These listings are not submersible pumps. The washer kit says it is not waterproof. Put the strainer and the inlet hose in the water and leave the motor in a dry, ventilated place. A pump dropped into the butt can take a leak straight into the motor, which is the failure the head-down mounting rule is written to avoid.
What fuse do I fit?
The fuse on the positive lead should match the maximum amps printed for your model. In this set that runs from 4.0 A on the Seaflo to 5 A on VerRich and up to 12 A on the 20.8 L/min Pindex. A 5 A fuse copied from a Shurflo manual is right for that Shurflo only. If your listing does not print a current, do not invent one from a forum diagram.
Which way up does the motor go?
If you mount the pump vertically, put the wet end down and the motor up, so a leak cannot run into the motor. Camper Happy says not to put the motor face down on a vertical bulkhead. Shurflo's 105 manual says pump head down for the same reason. On a horizontal board, keep the body dry and do not crush the feet with over-tight screws.
Why does it click on and off?
The pressure switch is seeing a small loss of pressure and restarting. A dripping tap, a leak at a barb, or no accumulator will do that. Camper Happy uses an accumulator to stop the chatter. Seal the 3/8 inch barbs, which Seaflo reviewers tape for this reason, before you decide the switch is faulty. A pump that never stops, with the taps shut, has the opposite fault.
