10 litre watering can buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

A full 10 litre watering can is about 10 kg of water before you add the plastic. If you are choosing one for borders, large pots, or an allotment, that weight is the first question, not the colour. The [10 litre watering can comparison](/hub/garden-watering/10-litre-watering-can) lists eight plastic cans on amazon.co.uk, from £10.36 to £16.95. This 10 litre watering can buying guide walks the checks in order: carry weight, rose, fill opening, handle, then material. Peter F. compared those listings on 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. What a full 10 litre can weighs

One litre of water weighs one kilogram. Haws states that conversion, and it is the figure that matters once the can is in your hand. An empty weight of 380 g on the Geli, the lowest printed figure in this set, still leaves you holding roughly 10.4 kg when the can is full. The heaviest printed shell here is 600 g on the red lidded B2C. The difference is 220 g, a mug of water, not a different job. RHS advice is to fill only to a weight you can manage. The Geli specification line says 2.7 gallons without naming the gallon, so that line is not a confirmed 10 litre fill.

The rose, not the word gentle

Which? tested 16 watering cans, including the Geli Big Watering Can in green, and found many roses too coarse for seed trays. Gentle appears on Prosperplast, EarlyGrow, the red B2C, and the other B2C listing. Reviews contradict it. UK reviews of the Prosperplast ZA1361 describe large holes and a waterfall, and a rose that does not stay on. One red B2C review says the flow is fast and that it drips where the rose is pushed on. A push-fit rose that falls off is a repeated fault: ANGIX reviews mention tape, sanding, and a missing sprinkler. For seedlings, read how to use a watering can before you rely on these sprays.

Fill opening and handle

Which? notes that a handle across the opening clashes with a tap, especially a water-butt tap. Several Geli reviews say the handle gets in the way of a kitchen tap and a water-butt tap. One buyer filled it through the spout with a short hose offcut. The red B2C was bought because the handle does not cross the hole. Three of the four UK reviews in that file say the same. It also lists a rear pouring handle and a screw lid. If your only fill point is a low butt tap and the handle crosses the hole, skip that can. Galvanised steel is a different choice on the plastic versus metal page. Every can here is plastic.

Material, frost and what this size is for

Plastic flexes instead of denting. It can fade in prolonged sun, and Haws says water left in it over a freeze can split it along a mould line. Empty it before a frost. Galvanised steel is outside this table and usually heavier. A metal can does not remove the 10 kg of water. Use a stated 10 litre can for beds, rows, and large pots, if you can carry it. Houseplants are the usual mismatch: BBC Gardeners' World’s indoor size is about four litres. A listing that says indoor and outdoor does not resize the can. If the listing and the can disagree, that is a returns question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Geli is 4.5 from 9,493 at £10.36.

Common questions

How heavy is a full 10 litre watering can?
One litre of water weighs one kilogram, so the water alone is about 10 kg. Empty weights printed in this amazon.co.uk set run from 380 g to 600 g, which adds a little and does not change the job. If that load is too much to hold close and level, fill less or buy a smaller can. The lowest empty weight here is not a claim that the can is the lightest 10 litre model in the UK.
What should I check before the colour or the brand?
Check whether you can carry about 10 kg, then whether the rose suits the plants, then whether the handle clears the tap you will use. Colour and brand come after those three. A green can with the handle across a water-butt tap is a worse buy than a red can that fills cleanly, even if you prefer green.
Is a rose labelled gentle safe for seed trays?
Not on that wording alone. Which? found many roses too coarse for seed trays. Reviews of cans in this set that say gentle still describe a fast spray, a loose rose, or a shower that suits soil around stems rather than seedlings. Use a smaller can for trays, or turn the rose upwards and water lightly, as the how-to page describes.
Why does the handle matter at a water-butt tap?
A water-butt tap is low and short. A handle that crosses the fill hole clashes with it, which Which? notes and which Geli reviews repeat. A handle that leaves the hole clear, as reviewers describe on the red B2C, is the shape to look for if that butt is your only fill point.
Will a spare rose from another brand fit?
Often it will not. Spout diameters are not standardised in these listings, and a push-fit rose that already falls off will not be fixed by a rose that is the wrong size. Check the fit before you rely on a spare. Reviews of the ANGIX describe tape and sanding on the rose that came with the can.
Is 10 litres the right size for houseplants?
Usually no. BBC Gardeners' World treats about four litres as an indoor size, and a full 10 litre can is about 10 kg plus a spray that can wash compost out of a small pot. A listing that says indoor and outdoor does not resize the can. Use this capacity for borders, rows, and large pots you can water at the roots.
Does plastic split if I leave water in it over winter?
It can. Haws says water expansion in a freeze can split plastic along a mould line, and can dome a metal base as well. Empty the can before a frost and store it where rain will not refill it. That applies to every plastic can in this comparison, including the ones with a lid, because reviews do not confirm that those lids seal.
