Harvesting scissors for herbs

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are cutting basil for supper, or a handful of chives, and the scissors in the drawer have already been used on tape. Harvesting scissors for herbs have to make a narrow cut on soft growth and then meet food without borrowing a safety claim the seller never wrote. In the eight amazon.co.uk listings on the [Harvesting scissors comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/harvesting-scissors), only the Gardena FreshCut carries a food-safe line, and Gardena's UK page repeats it. Peter F. checked that listing on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Rosemary that has turned woody leaves this page.

What a herb snip has to do

A herb snip has to sever a soft tip cleanly, so the stub can grow again. The Royal Horticultural Society tells you to take basil shoot tips often so a tender UK plant stays bushy. A pointed blade lets you take one stem and leave the neighbour. Wash before the herb meets food. Stainless steel, a fluorine coating or a high star line does not mean the maker has said the blade is food safe. Tip, lock and budget sit in the harvesting scissors buying guide.

The one food-contact pair in this set

The Gardena FreshCut, model 12212-20, is the food-contact pair. The listing says the pointed stainless blades, for delicate herbs, berries and cut flowers, are food safe, do not transfer odour or taste, and are dishwasher safe. Gardena's UK page says the same and includes a safety cap. The shelf price is about £15.02. Amazon.co.uk states two years. Gardena ties 25 years to registration at gardena.com within three months. A listed size of 10 by 10 mm conflicts with the 47 mm blade.

A fluorine coating is not a food-safe line

Fluorine-coated Saboten snips are not the food-safe substitute. The PT-16F, at 35 mm and 42 g, and the AG-9, at 58 mm, use a coating the seller and Saboten describe for shedding sap. That can matter on sticky ornamental stems. It does not become a food-contact claim because the steel is stainless. The SD-8 is a light straight blade at about £13.19 with no food-safe line. The PLACHIDAY title also sells hoof trimming, and the generic fruit shear has no review line and two steel names.

Soft herbs, berries, then stop

Cut basil just above a pair of leaves. Gardeners' World is specific because a cut below the leaves leaves a stub that often stalls. On a windowsill pot you should still see two leaves at the top of the stem you shortened. Chives are cut to the base. Parsley comes away as a whole leaf and its stalk. A cosmos or a strawberry stalk, still green, is the same soft job. Rosemary shoots of about 10 to 15 cm belong on secateurs, and you stay out of bare wood. Gardena's HerbCut 12214-20 is the woody-herb model, with a food-contact claim of its own, and it is not in this comparison. The boundary is on harvesting scissors versus secateurs.

Common questions

Which scissors should you use for basil and other soft herbs?
Use a narrow snip, and in this set use the Gardena FreshCut if the blades will touch food. It is the listing that says food safe and dishwasher safe, with a 47 mm blade, a safety cap and a shelf price of about £15.02. Gardeners' World uses scissors for basil, chives and parsley. A Saboten will cut soft growth, though its fluorine coating is not a food-contact claim. Wash the blades before the herbs reach the board.
Are harvesting scissors food safe?
Only when the listing says so. In these eight amazon.co.uk rows, that sentence appears on the Gardena FreshCut and on Gardena's UK page for model 12212-20. Stainless steel, a star rating and a fluorine coating do not add it. The Saboten coating is described for sap. The PLACHIDAY pair is also marketed for hoof trimming, which is a reason to keep it off the herb board. Wash any blade you use on food, claim or no claim.
Is the Gardena FreshCut dishwasher safe?
The seller says yes, and Gardena's UK page for the FreshCut says the same. That claim is for this model, not for the other shears in the comparison. Take the safety cap off before a wash and put it back before the point meets a pocket. The blade length to trust is 47 mm, not the 10 by 10 mm size line. A two-year line on amazon.co.uk and Gardena's registration warranty are different sentences.
Does a fluorine coating make a Saboten blade food safe?
No. On the PT-16F and the AG-9 the coating is a sap-shedding claim from the seller and from Saboten. It can be a fair reason to choose those snips for sticky ornamental stems. It is not a statement that the blade will not transfer taste, and it is not a dishwasher instruction. The SD-8 has no food-safe line either. If the herbs are for eating, the FreshCut is the pair in this set that actually makes the claim.
Can the same pair cut rosemary?
Not once the shoots are woody. Gardeners' World uses secateurs for rosemary sprigs of about 10 to 15 cm and tells you to avoid leafless wood. A soft side shoot might still fall to a snip. The woody base should not. Gardena's HerbCut is the woody-herb model, and it is not one of the eight listings here. Change tool when the stem has bark.
How do you cut basil so it grows back?
Cut the tip just above a pair of leaves, often, before the plant flowers. The RHS wants those shoot tips taken so a tender basil stays bushy. A stub left below the leaves is the cut that stalls. On a pot, you should still see leaves at the top of every stem you shortened. Chives go to the base, and parsley comes away as leaf plus stalk.
