How to prune with secateurs

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a Fiskars pair in your hand, and the stem is a rose cane with a bud you do not want to ruin. How to prune with secateurs means placing that cut, knowing whether your model names a lock, and stopping when the wood is too thick. Model choice sits on the [Fiskars secateurs comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/fiskars-secateurs) and on the [Fiskars secateurs buying guide](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/fiskars-secateurs/sub/fiskars-secateurs-buying-guide). The RHS is the source for the rose cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used those public UK sources, updated 21 October 2026. A clean cut is not a healing percentage.

Where to cut

On a rose, the RHS says you cut no more than 5 mm above a bud, sloping away so water does not sit on it. The same rule covers deadheading. Late winter is often the time for many roses. That is a seasonal habit, not a date for every cultivar. Put the bud just beyond the blade, on the side you want the new growth to leave from. If you leave a long stub, it dies back. If you cut into the bud, you lose it. Five millimetres is about the thickness of a match. A blunt blade tears that face even when the distance is right. Keep your other hand out of the closing blades. If you cannot see the bud, stop and turn the stem until you can.

Match the head, then stop

Green roses want bypass. Dry, hard twigs want the P941 anvil, which says it is not for fresh green growth. The P321, P341 and P961 say they are not for dry, hard twigs. The classic never makes that split. The head argument is on Fiskars bypass or anvil secateurs. Then use the lower diameter. The classic is about 5/8 inch. The Solids are about 2 cm. The UK PowerGear X page limits those pruners to 2 cm, below the 2.6 cm bullets. If you twist or take three bites, the stem is too thick, and loppers or a saw are the next tool.

Lock, sap and sharpening

Before the secateurs go into a pocket, the blades need to be closed. The P321, the P341 and the classic name a lock. The P961, the P941 and the DualAction do not name one in the bullets. A review is not the specification. On the Solids the clip can close mid-cut. Test the lock before a row of roses. Wipe sap off before it hardens, then sharpen the bevel and oil the pivot. Kit 1001640 is sold separately. If the handles will not spring open, open them by hand. If they still stay shut, that pair is finished for one-handed work.

When you should not continue

Stop when the work leaves the ground. The RHS says you should not carry on if you are not confident, especially overhead. Do not prune above head height from a ladder. A crown, a limb you cannot reach with both feet on the ground, anything near cables, and any cut that wants a chainsaw are jobs for someone who does that work. A hedge you cannot identify is the same stop. If pain does not settle after you rest, the next step is not a different orange handle. That point is on Fiskars secateurs for arthritic hands. HSE guidance on repetitive force is written for employers under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. It is not a household statute. The 5 mm sloping cut is the part the plant notices.

Common questions

How far above a bud should I cut a rose?
No more than 5 mm above the bud, on a slope that falls away from the bud so water does not sit on it. That is the RHS rose guidance, and it is the same idea when you deadhead. A longer stub dies back. Cutting into the bud wastes it. Five millimetres is a small gap, so look at the bud before you close the blades.
Which models in this set name a lock?
The P321, the P341 and the classic 91095935 name a lock for storage. The P961, the P941 and the DualAction do not name one in the bullets. A review that praises a lock is not the specification. Test the lock you actually have, because on the Solids and the classic it can also close when you do not want it to.
What do I do when the handles will not spring open?
Open them with your other hand, then clean and oil the pivot and the spring. Reviewers mention a weak return spring on the classic, the P961 and the P321. That is a repeated theme, not a failure rate. If they still will not open after cleaning, stop using that pair one-handed. Kit 1001640 is a separate purchase on the Solid and X-series listings.
When is the stem too thick for these secateurs?
When it is past the lower stated diameter, or when you have to twist and take several bites. Trust about 16 mm on the classic, about 2 cm on the Solids and on the UK PowerGear page, and do not promote the 2.6 cm bullets over that 2 cm line. The DualAction title of 2.5 cm and the 1 inch attribute should stay unmerged. Thicker wood wants loppers or a saw.
When should a person stop and hire help?
When the cut is overhead, in a crown, near cables, or needs a chainsaw, or when you cannot name the hedge and it may be diseased. The RHS says stop if you are not confident, especially off the ground. Hand pain that does not settle is a reason to rest and get advice, not a reason to push a thicker stem. Deadheading at a comfortable height can stay with you.
