Electric tiller buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are looking at amazon.co.uk titles that call the same machine a tiller, a cultivator, or a rotavator, and at £95.98 that does not include a battery. An electric tiller buying guide for a UK bed starts with the plot and the socket, then the width, then the box. The twelve listings on the [Tiller comparison](/hub/garden-tools/tiller) run from a 10 cm cordless tool at £64.99 to a 48 cm corded machine at £123.49, plus a 40 V kit at £254.99. The figures are those October 2026 listings. There is no plot trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the bed, not the badge

A border and a vegetable plot do not want the same head. Stated widths run from 10 cm on the Normodic W03 at £64.99, through about 20–23 cm on cordless tools, to 32–36 cm on the mid corded machines, then 45 cm on the Hyundai HYT1500E and 48 cm on the AIVOLT. Buy against the amazon.co.uk width. A raised bed about a metre across is a 20–32 cm job if the tines stay off the timber. Hard or turfed ground is where the Royal Horticultural Society points to a larger machine or a hire. RHS calls rotavating wet clay extremely damaging.

Corded, cordless kit, or body only

Corded machines here state 1,050–1,800 W and, on several models, a 10 m cable: eSkde ESTI2 at £76.99, Hyundai HYT1050E at £93.99, NETTA at £99.99, HYT1500E at £119.99, and AIVOLT at £123.49. The lead-or-battery choice is on cordless or corded tiller. Both Alloyman ASINs at £109.99 state two 4.0 Ah packs, GEARPASS at £74.99 two 4.0 Ah packs, Yospinber at £79.99 two 3.0 Ah packs, and the Hyundai HY40CT36 at £254.99 two 4.0 Ah packs and a dual charger. The Einhell GE-CR 18/20 Li E Solo is £95.98 and 20 cm, with the battery and charger sold separately. Price an 18 V Power X-Change pack you do not own before you set it against £109.99.

Width, depth, and weight

Depth is a manufacturer figure. The eSkde states 22 cm, and one review puts the useful bite at about 3 inches. Most listings do not state a depth skid. Reviewers on hard ground describe two or three passes, the first one light. That pass is on how to use an electric tiller. The HYT1050E says 8 kg in the details and "just 9 kg" in a bullet. Leave both visible.

What the sticker leaves out

UK plugs should be marked BS 1363. Electrical Safety First says outdoor tools need an RCD, that they stay off wet ground, and that an extension reel is fully unwound. A 10 m lead in the box does not prove 30 mA protection. One Alloyman review said a pack fell to about three minutes after about three months. Warranty words differ: three years on the Hyundai corded models, 45 days on one Alloyman line, and no term on the eSkde. A 5.0 from six reviews is thinner evidence than 4.6 from 536, and the two Alloyman ASINs share one pool of 1,569. Named situations are on best electric tiller UK.

Common questions

What width do I need for a border or a raised bed?
A flower border in this set is the 10 cm Normodic, or a 20–23 cm cordless head if you want more bite. A raised bed you can already fork is closer to 20–32 cm: the Einhell at 20 cm, the Alloyman at 23 cm, or the eSkde at 32 cm. A 45 cm or 48 cm head is for open ground and will strike the walls of a narrow timber bed.
Is 1,050 W enough, or do I need 1,500 W?
The HYT1050E at £93.99 and the eSkde at £76.99 both state 1,050 W and have several hundred reviews of real beds. The HYT1500E at £119.99 states 1,500 W, six blades, and 45 cm, with reviews that mention clay, rocks, and a hard kick. Stay at 1,050 W when the bed is workable. Step up when the plot is wider and you can manage the pull. Neither wattage was measured on a clay trial for this page.
Why is a £95.98 cordless tiller not a complete kit?
That price is the Einhell GE-CR 18/20 Li E Solo. The listing says the battery and charger are sold separately. Alloyman kits at £109.99 state two 4.0 Ah packs. Compare the Einhell with those kits only after you have priced an 18 V Power X-Change pack you do not already own. The body by itself is a different purchase from a two-battery carton.
Does a 22 cm depth claim mean the first pass goes that deep?
Stated depth is a manufacturer figure. One eSkde review put useful depth at about 3 inches, a little more in loose soil, against a 22 cm claim. Plan a light first pass and a second once the soil has broken, and keep the tool in the shed if the clay is wet.
Can I use a corded tiller if I only have an indoor socket?
Only if an outdoor-rated extension reaches the bed, the reel is fully unwound, and the circuit has RCD protection. Electrical Safety First treats the lead, the boots, and the RCD as part of using a rotavator. A 10 m cable does not cross a house and a wet lawn by itself. If you are unsure about 30 mA protection, ask a registered electrician before you add a longer reel.
