Snow shovel for the car

Updated: 21.10.2026

A snow shovel for the car is a small tool you have already assembled, used to free the tyres, not to clear the whole drive. The faults that matter show up when you try to join the handle at the roadside. The [snow shovel comparison](/hub/garden-tools/snow-shovel) has the prices and the review counts from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. There is no legal requirement, in the UK sources we used, to carry a shovel.

What belongs in the boot

A boot shovel folds or comes apart, and the blade is about 10 to 13 inches, not 40 cm. The TDBS is listed at 10 by 12.5 inches and 880 g, at £14.99, with 4.5 from 154 reviews. That is the best value pick if you accept that some reviewers call it flimsy. The Hniuyun is £12.98 with 5.0 from one review and no review text. The UMUACCAN states 80 or 108 cm, at £25.99, with 4.2 from 337 reviews. Reviewers around 5 ft 5 in and at 171 cm say the handle is too short. Its listed weight of 100 g is not a usable mass. A 140 cm EarlyGrow will not live in most boots. If the job is the drive, use the snow shovel for the driveway page.

How to free the car

Clear the snow around the tyres, then a short path in front of the wheels and behind them. Move off gently without spinning. Spinning polishes the surface and digs the tyre in. A 10-inch blade is enough for that pocket of snow. Before you start the engine, clear snow away from the exhaust. Do not pour water around the tyres. Salt, including about a tablespoon per square metre, is on the how to clear snow page. If you have a heart condition, Cardiomyopathy UK says to avoid shovelling.

Kit or shovel only

A shovel alone frees the tyres. A kit is what you want when the roof, the bonnet, and the windscreen are loaded as well. The silver COVVY, at £18.39 with 4.4 from 111 reviews, lists a shovel, a brush, an ice scraper, a bag, and gloves. One review was missing the scraper. The black COVVY is the same model, 010013, at £20.99 with fewer reviews. If both are in stock, the silver listing is the lower price in this capture. The COVVY listing says an ABS scraper will not hurt paint or glass. That sentence is the seller’s. A shovel blade is the wrong tool on glass. The TDBS remains the shovel-only choice, with no brush and no bag.

Assemble it before the trip

Build every sectional tool at home. The LESOLEIL is the warning in this set: 48 inches, £24.35, and 3.3 from 83 reviews. Several UK reviews say the poles do not connect, or that a handle part was missing. The TDBS has the other failure: one review says the handle snapped, and others call it flimsy. The aluminium strip on a plastic head can be sharp at the cut ends. You do not have to carry a shovel. Parkers says there is no legal requirement, and nothing on GOV.UK’s clear-snow page creates one for a driver.

Common questions

How do I dig the car out?
Clear snow from around each tyre, then a short path in front of the wheels and behind them. Move off gently, without spinning, so you do not polish the snow into ice. Clear the exhaust area before you start the engine. Do not pour water. A 10-inch blade is enough for the wheels and the wrong tool for the whole drive.
Is a 3-in-1 kit better than a shovel alone?
A kit is better when you also need a brush and an ice scraper for the glass, the roof, and the lights. The silver COVVY at £18.39 includes those, plus a bag and gloves, with 4.4 from 111 reviews. A shovel such as the TDBS at £14.99 does not. The black COVVY is the same model at a higher price and a thinner review line. For tyres only, the shovel is enough.
Can I use it on the windscreen?
Use the scraper in a kit, not the shovel blade. The COVVY listing says the ABS scraper removes ice without hurting paint or glass. That is the seller’s claim, not a test we ran. Grit under a hard edge will score glass, so stop if the screen is dirty. The Kenmohuo kit has only two reviews with no text, so do not prefer it on windscreen wording alone.
Is there a law that says I must carry a shovel?
No. Parkers states there is no legal requirement to carry a snow shovel, and the UK pages we used on clearing snow do not create one for drivers. Carrying one is a practical choice if you expect to free the tyres yourself. You are also not required, by GOV.UK’s clear-snow guidance, to shovel the public road.
Are collapsible shovels strong enough for ice around the tyres?
Some cope, and the reviews do not agree. One UMUACCAN review says the metal edge broke ice, and another says the shovel is for fresh snow, not compacted snow. TDBS reviews include both a report of deep snow cleared and a handle that snapped. A wear strip does not make a 10-inch travel shovel into a breaker for thick ice.
Should I assemble it before I travel?
Yes. Build it at home, including every extra section. The LESOLEIL reviews include poles that do not connect and missing handle parts, at 3.3 from 83 reviews. The COVVY kits have arrived without a scraper or a bag. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day right to reject faulty goods if you find the fault in time.
