Best garden fork UK: choose the job before the brand

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are about to buy one fork for a UK plot or an allotment, and an amazon.co.uk search for "pitchfork" will mix a digging fork with a manure fork. A best garden fork UK choice starts with the job, not the star rating. In this set the shelf prices run from £17.95 to £32.99 and the weights from 1.35 kg to 2.23 kg. The [pitchfork comparison](/hub/garden-tools/pitchfork) holds the full listing table. This page is the order of choice: job, then head, then shaft and length, then price. What UK shops mean by pitchfork, garden fork, and border fork

B&Q's planting guide uses three names: a standard fork for compacted ground, a pitch fork with wider gaps for compost, manure, and hay, and a smaller border fork for tight beds. On amazon.co.uk the word pitchfork returns both of the first two. In this folder that is three digging forks and four manure forks, and none of the seven is labelled a border fork. Digging forks here are the Spear & Jackson 4550DF, the Draper 88789, and the FORCOLID SSCZ007. Manure forks are the Bulldog BMFT, the Spear & Jackson 1600HS, the 1636DE, and the 1636CU. Wonkee Donkee's trade note is stricter: a hay pitchfork is often two or three widely spaced tines, while these manure listings are four-tine tools. The digging fork versus manure fork page stays on that contrast. A border fork is a third tool.

Head, tines, and socket

Square tines are the digging pattern. The Draper head is printed at 280 mm by 180 mm. The 1636DE also states square tines, but the listing calls it a manure fork for raking muck. Square does not, by itself, make it a soil fork. Oval tines appear on the 1600HS and the 1636CU. The wide heads are the Bulldog at 325 mm by 230 mm and the 1600HS at 330 mm by 240 mm. That width is why a heap is faster, and why those heads are a poor way to spike a bed. The 4550DF does not print a tine count. It does print a limit: loose or sandy soil, and not for digging out trees or rocks or for lifting heavy roots. The amazon.co.uk line is the one attached to the £26 listing. "Forged" on a title is not a socket certificate. The Bulldog in this set is the tubular BMFT manure fork, so Bulldog's one-piece forged FAQ does not transfer.

Shaft, handle, and length

Hardwood in this set is the 4550DF wishbone and the 1600HS. Steel is the Bulldog, the 1636DE, the 1636CU, and the Draper. A few listings do not give you one length. The 1600HS table says 154.99 cm, the handle bullet says 1,220 mm, and one UK review measured about 147 cm. The code 1600HS is not 1,600 mm. The FORCOLID title says 41 inches, a bullet says 45 inches, and the table says 114.3 cm. If you are buying for a set height, that clash is enough to stop the order. The other five listings do give a single overall length, from 100 cm to 155 cm.

What £18 to £33 buys here

Under £20 you get two different tools. The Bulldog is £17.95, with 4.7 from 124 reviews, praised for compost and described with tines that bend on horse muck. The Draper is £18.53, with 4.4 from 533 reviews. The bullet says fully hardened and tempered. UK reviews still describe bent tines. £18 is enough for a first fork only if the head matches the job. Above that, the 1636DE is the lightest at 1.35 kg, the 4550DF is £26 with 4.4 from 3,160 reviews and a 10-year line, and the 1636CU is £32.99 with 4.7 from 30 reviews. Thirty ratings are not the same evidence as 3,160. None of these seven listings prints a BS 3388 line. A 10-year guarantee, where the 4550DF states one, is extra to the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which already treats durability as part of satisfactory quality.

Common questions

Is a pitchfork the same as a garden fork?
In a UK shed the words overlap, and on amazon.co.uk they overlap in the search results. A garden fork or digging fork in this set is for soil. A pitchfork, in the trade sense Wonkee Donkee uses, is for pitching hay and is often a different tine layout. The four manure forks here are what this search gives you for compost and straw. Match the listing title, not the search box.
Stainless or carbon for my soil?
The only stainless head here is the 4550DF, and its listing limits it to loose or sandy soil. Carbon heads are the Draper and the 1600HS. Stainless can shed sticky compost in the UK reviews of the 4550DF. It is not a claim that the tines will survive clay or rubble, and a hardened carbon bullet is not a claim that a tine will stay straight.
Wood shaft or steel shaft?
Choose hardwood if you want a warmer grip and you will keep the shaft dry. That is the 4550DF and the 1600HS. Choose tubular steel or a steel core if the fork lives near a wet heap, which is the Bulldog, the 1636DE, the 1636CU, and the Draper. Steel can feel thin and cold. The 1636CU reviews mention gloves.
What does "exceeds BS 3388" mean on a fork?
It means the maker says that range beat the load test in BS 3388:2004. It is not a mark printed on these seven amazon.co.uk listings. Do not treat a star rating, or a forged title, as that test. If a live page adds the sentence later, it is still the maker's claim, not a test we ran.
Is £18 enough for a digging fork?
£18.53 is the Draper's price, and 533 reviews make it a real sample. It is enough for a steel-cored digging fork if you accept 2.23 kg and the UK notes about bent tines. It is not enough, at any price here, to buy the £17.95 Bulldog and expect a manure fork to open clay.
