Herb stripper buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are looking at wooden sets and steel plates on amazon.co.uk, and the title is doing more work than the specification. Oak, walnut, ceramic, a bowl, or a dishwasher tick often appears in the headline and then disappears from the table. This herb stripper buying guide is the short list of facts that have to be true before you order. Prices and the full row sit on the [Leaf separator](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-separator) comparison. Washing is on [wooden or stainless steel herb stripper](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-separator/sub/leaf-separator-wood-or-steel), and which row to open first is on [best herb stripper](/hub/garden-tools/leaf-separator/sub/leaf-separator-best). What you are actually buying

A leaf separator here is a flat plate with holes. You push a stem through and pull so the leaves stay behind. It is not a garden rake, and it is not a zipper that drops leaves into a cup. Titles still say pottery or ceramic. The material line says wood or stainless steel, so ceramic is a style phrase unless the table repeats it. A hole that is too big lets the leaves through. A hole that is too small snaps a woody sprig. Which? treats wooden spoons as hand-wash items because heat splits wood. A dishwasher tick on wood does not overturn that. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers a title that promises a bowl or ceramic when the count is one plate.

Holes, pieces, and a cover

Printed millimetres beat the phrase multiple holes. Only YOUDALIS lists nine diameters, from 1 mm to 15 mm, at £4.99. FooYee says seven holes at £1.89 and does not print them. totnwrooye says seven graduated holes on three pieces at £3.99 and does not print them either. A second plate is often a spare. VZU at £3.72 is one steel plate with nine holes and a cover, still without diameters. YOUDALIS and VZU name a cover for the steel curve.

Words that must match the table

ToqoGeri and Noenaeni say walnut in a bullet. The material line says wood. Oak is asked on Cateye and ToqoGeri and not answered. Buy the word the table uses. QLHNGUZ’s title says bowl and the bullets list two wooden plates at £4.99 with no bowl. Duminyu’s title adds a bowl, a chopper and tongs, and the table says one item at £5.99. Bisienya’s title says pottery at 11.8 by 10 cm. The material line says stainless steel and the dimension line says 11.8 by 11.8 cm. Xiciki mentioned ceramic, and a UK reviewer received wood. VZU and Bisienya name a dishwasher. YOUDALIS, at 4.2 from 55, does not. totnwrooye ticks dishwasher safe on wood. Duminyu’s 5.0 has no text, and several rows have no star line.

A checklist before you order

Stop when one check fails. The material line has to say wood or stainless steel. Diameters have to be on the page for a particular stem. The item count has to match the title. A sharp steel edge needs a cover, and wood needs a hand wash. A missing review line tells you nothing about the pull. If the plate is in your hand, the stroke is on how to use a herb stripper. £5.99 is not better than £1.89 by itself. FooYee has a UK note that thyme came off on the first pull. YOUDALIS at £4.99 prints 1 mm to 15 mm and has 55 ratings.

Common questions

How many holes do I need?
You need one hole that is just tight on the stem you actually cook, not a large number for its own sake. A printed run from 1 mm to 15 mm, as on the YOUDALIS plate, covers a thyme sprig at the small end and a modest kale rib at the large end. A title that only says seven holes, as FooYee and totnwrooye do, does not tell you whether the smallest opening will take thyme.
Should I buy one plate or a set of two or three?
Buy one plate when the listing prints the sizes and includes a cover if the edge is sharp. Buy two when you want a spare to give away, which is what one FooYee reviewer did with a £1.89 pair. Three pieces, as on totnwrooye at £3.99, are often three similar plates. A UK reviewer said they did not need all three. A set does not fix unpublished hole sizes.
Is walnut or oak named in the specification, or only in a bullet?
On ToqoGeri and Noenaeni, walnut is a bullet and the material line says wood. Oak is asked on several wooden pages, including Cateye and ToqoGeri, and those files do not answer. If the species is not in the specification, you are not buying that species from the table. You are buying wood plus a marketing word.
What if the title says bowl, pottery, or ceramic?
Read the item count and the material line. QLHNGUZ and Duminyu put a bowl in the title and do not itemise one. Bisienya says pottery in the title and stainless steel in the table, and the two size lines do not match. Xiciki’s page mentioned ceramic, and the UK reviewer received wood, including an untreated plywood back on one piece. Order the object the table describes.
When is £5.99 no better than £1.89 inside this set?
When the dearer listing adds a word the table does not support, and the cheaper one has a review you can read. £5.99 here buys Noenaeni, Duminyu or Bisienya with no usable review text. £1.89 buys FooYee’s two wooden plates and a UK comment that thyme stripped cleanly, if you will hand-wash them. Spend more for printed millimetres and a larger review file, which in this set is the £4.99 YOUDALIS plate.
