Hydraulic top link buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have a compact tractor, an implement that never sits at the right pitch, and a double-acting spool you have not yet used for the top link. A hydraulic top link buying guide has to settle the pin, the closed length, the check valve and the couplers before the price means anything. In this amazon.co.uk set the shelf prices run from about £198.08 to £335.66, and several titles disagree with their own bullets. The locked rows are on the [hydraulic top link comparison](/hub/garden-tools/hydraulic-top-link). This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using those listings and public UK sources, not a lab test. What you measure first

Start with the pin in the tractor's top hitch and the hole on the implement, not with a horsepower sticker. Malpas Online and Agri-Linc put a category 1 top-link pin at about 19 mm (3/4 in) and a category 2 pin at about 25 mm (1 in). When the guides disagree, the pin you measured wins. Closed length is the next number. Take the hole-centre distance with the implement on the ground. The retracted cylinder has to be shorter than that working length. In this set the consistent short category 1 titles sit around 18 1/8–26 3/8 in, and the longer category 1 titles around 20 7/8–31 7/8 in. If your centres fall outside both brackets, none of these kits is the right length. Several category 1 titles here print a 3/8 in pin, which is 9.5 mm, not 19 mm. Pin against pin is on cat 1 or cat 2 hydraulic top link.

Check valve, hoses and the remote

A hydraulic top link in this set is sold as a double-acting cylinder, which means two hoses and a spool that can send oil both ways. A single-acting outlet will not extend and retract it. If the tractor has no free double-acting remote, stop. Adding a diverter or a new spool is a workshop job. Approved Hydraulics describes a double pilot check as locking the load until pilot pressure releases the checks. The same valve blocks float. If you need the top link to follow the ground, a locking block is the wrong specification, even though every listing here claims one. Seller pressures run from about 16 MPa (160 bar) up to a stated 250 bar maximum, above the 100 bar line where the Health and Safety Executive's serious reported fluid-injection cases begin. Where this set prints a hose length it is 75 cm or 79 cm. A UK Kramp category 1 set is sold with 900 mm hoses. ISO 5675 is the agricultural quick coupler. It is not an ISO 7241 industrial coupler. The bullets say male couplers or a threaded joint. They do not name your tractor.

What the listings in this set actually state

Price is the last column. The entry band in this capture is about £198.08–£216.05 for the category 1-style kits. The longer Solarhome category 2 titles sit at about £243.26–£268.56. HAOREBAIYU is about £335.66 and prints a weight of 1 kg, which does not belong on a steel cylinder of this size. Three Solarhome pages disagree with themselves. One title says category 1-1 and 16 1/8–22 7/16 in, and a bullet says category 2 and 22 3/8–33 1/2 in. Two further titles also print a second length. The files do not say which line was packed. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the goods have to be as described. Do not treat either line as the true one.

When not to buy one

Leave the screw top link in place if you change pitch a few times a year and you do not have a double-acting spool. Do not buy a cylinder you would have to grind to fit. A bush can change a pin diameter. It does not fix a clevis that is too wide. Stop and ask a hydraulics fitter if draft is sensed through the top link and the tractor manual does not describe a hydraulic replacement, if you need a made-up hose, or if you are about to add a spool. The Health and Safety Executive says not to search for leaks with a bare hand. If oil appears on the first test, hydraulic top link leaking separates a loose banjo from a gland leak, after the implement is down and the engine is off.

Common questions

Is hitch category the same as horsepower?
ISO 730 relates category to tractor power, and shop articles add their own horsepower bands. Kramp's cutoff does not match Malpas. The pin and the clevis you measured are the order you place.
Do I need a check valve on a hydraulic top link?
You need a pilot check, often sold as a locking block, if the angle has to hold while the spool is in neutral. The same valve stops the link floating. If you want the implement to follow the ground through the top link, do not buy the locking version.
Will the included couplers fit my tractor?
Not on the evidence in these listings. They name male couplers or a threaded joint, and they do not name a tractor or ISO 5675. Agricultural couplers are their own standard. Compare the male nose with the female half already on your remote before you assume a click fit.
What if the title and the bullet give different lengths?
Treat the listing as unsettled until the seller states one length and one category. In this set, three Solarhome pages print two lengths. The file does not say which cylinder is in the box. Keep the order inside a return window you can actually use.
When should I ask a hydraulics fitter?
Ask before you order if you need a new spool, a diverter or a made-up hose, or if the tractor senses draft through the top link and the manual is silent. Any pinprick wound from a leak is for urgent care, and you should say it may be hydraulic injection.
