Berry picker buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are standing in front of a currant bush, and every amazon.co.uk title says berry picker. A berry picker buying guide has to name the object in the parcel before it talks about stars, because a metal scoop, a light plastic rake, and a Gardena head are not substitutes. Prices and the full table live on the [Berry comb comparison](/hub/garden-tools/berry-comb). Match the catch to the plant, read the rating only inside that type, then check the teeth before you travel. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Three tools under one name

The handheld metal scoop is a plastic body, metal combs, and a stopper or raised edge: the CKB at £12.32 with nine metal combs and 460 g, plus GUGULUZA and Spesh colours at £12.99. Black-red GUGULUZA’s spec says metal. The other GUGULUZA specs say plastic while the bullets still say metal. The all-plastic branch is ARMYJY at £9.20, EfforPrac at £9.48, the Generic scoop at £7.89, and Fowybe at £5.29 with a baffle. ARMYJY, EfforPrac, and Generic have no review line. You are not buying a discounted CKB. Gardena’s 17400-20, at £21.58 and 234 g, has rotating plastic teeth and a 0.8 litre basket. The pole is not in the box. Cherries above you follow this branch. A pocket tool does not. Tooth material is on the metal or plastic berry comb page.

Match the comb to the fruit

The comb suits bilberry on a low shrub and garden currants taken as whole strigs. An established blackcurrant bush can yield about 4.5 kg, so the tool is speed on a dense bush. Strawberries are the wrong job. Mixed blackberries come off ripe and unripe together. The tooth gap is not printed. A UK maker’s bilberry note uses about 6 mm, and a homemade trial used about 5 mm. One CKB reviewer said smaller berries fell through in a poor year. Season and access are on the bilberry rake page.

How to read the star line

Read the stars only after you know which object you are holding. CKB is 4.5 from 356, with 38 of the first 50 texts marked United Kingdom. Gardena is also 4.5, from 442, the larger pool, so it carries the top-pick badge on review volume. Its UK comments are about cherries, plums, and a pole that sometimes will not attach. GUGULUZA’s 4.2 from 1,662 is one file on three colours. Spesh is 4.0 from 206 on three part numbers. Fowybe’s 4.9 from seven ratings is too thin. The best-value badge sits on the CKB at £12.32. The pocket choice is on the best berry picker UK page.

What to inspect before you travel

Open the parcel before a day out. A bent CKB comb, bent Spesh wires, or a cracked GUGULUZA side is a return, not a repair on the path. A stopper, a raised edge, a baffle, or Gardena’s 0.8 litre basket is what keeps fruit in the scoop. If you cannot see one, you have a rake. Spesh says dishwasher, then air dry. Gardena says hand wash only. CKB does not print a dishwasher line.

Common questions

What are the three types I might actually receive?
You might receive a plastic scoop with metal teeth and a stopper or raised edge, an all-PP comb with little or no star line, or Gardena’s 17400-20 head with a 0.8 litre basket and rotating plastic teeth. The titles all say berry picker. If the listing does not name a stopper, a baffle, or a basket, treat it as a rake until you see one.
Which fruit makes a comb the wrong tool?
Strawberries are the clear miss, because these combs are for thin stems and small fruit that strip in a bunch. Mixed blackberries are the practical miss in UK reviews: ripe and unripe berries on one stalk come off together. Currants and bilberries are the jobs the reviews actually describe. Sloes and damsons appear as a side use on the CKB file, not as a reason to skip a proper prune or a hand pick on a thorny cane.
Why do three colours share one star line?
GUGULUZA black-red, black-green, and red repeat the same 4.2 from 1,662 and the same review texts. Spesh green-black SGC04, green SGC03, and red SGC01 repeat 4.0 from 206. The part numbers differ. The evidence does not. Read one file, then choose a colour, and do not add the counts together.
Does the Gardena box include a pole?
No. The included component is the berry picker. The listing says a combisystem handle is how you reach higher fruit, and that it locks with a screw. Two UK reviews say the pole would not attach. Budget for the handle as a second item, and try the fit at home before you need it under a cherry. The integrated handle is enough only for fruit you can already reach.
Is a 4.9 from seven ratings better than 4.5 from 356?
No. Fowybe’s 4.9 sits on seven ratings and four texts, with one marked United Kingdom. CKB’s 4.5 sits on 356 ratings, with a large UK share in the sample. The small sample can be real and still be too thin to steer a purchase. The main table keeps Fowybe off both badges for that reason.
