Avalanche shovel and probe

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are packing for a ski tour in the Cairngorms, or a winter walk off the piste, and amazon.co.uk answers with shovels. An avalanche shovel and probe are two of three tools, and the shovel does not search. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service asks anyone on skis or a snowboard to carry a transceiver, a probe, and a shovel, and to check that the beacons are on. Only the TerraWest Core Plus, at £44.95, puts a shovel and a 240 cm probe in one bag, and it does not include a transceiver. The [avalanche shovel comparison](/hub/garden-tools/avalanche-shovel) holds the eight listings we kept. We did not laboratory-test the blades. 240 cm is the short probe

The Ski Club asks for a probe of at least 240 cm, with a wire or Dyneema cord. An Inverness club floor of 2 m sits 40 cm under that minimum. It is the wrong length to buy if this probe is for Scottish ski tours. Avalanche Canada, writing about the object rather than UK law, calls 240 cm the short probe and treats deeper snow as a reason to go longer. The one probe in this comparison names a coated steel cord at 240 cm. Dyneema on a 2 m pole still misses the Ski Club figure.

The one probe in this comparison

TerraWest Core Plus, ASIN B09NHVPC15, is the only listing here with a probe. On amazon.co.uk it is £44.95. The item weight is 475 g. The probe bullet names 7075 T6 poles, a coated steel cord, and 299 g, at 240 cm, in a drawstring bag with the shovel. The shovel bullets name a 5052 aluminium blade and a 6061 telescopic shaft. amazon.co.uk shows 3.6 from 8 reviews. A UK ski-tour guide said the probe seemed decent and that the blade bent in a practice burial. The bag solves a forgotten pole, and it does not prove the blade or claim UIAA 156. It is best value here because it is the only shovel-and-probe kit under £50, and it is not the top pick because of that bend. The 475 g item weight and the 299 g probe bullet are easy to mix up.

A beacon kit is a different bill

A shovel here sits at about £37 to £55. A beacon kit is a different bill, and it is not a row on the shovel table. On amazon.co.uk, BCA Tracker S, ASIN B0FT4TBC65, was £379.95 with estimated import charges, with a Stealth 270 probe and a Dozer 1T shovel. It is not one of the eight listings we kept. The 270 cm probe is 30 cm over the Ski Club minimum, a longer choice for deeper snow, not a length every UK day requires. Do not quote £379.95 as the price of a shovel. Mammut's UK Barryvox 2 Peak 240 package is £420, with a 240 cm probe and an Alugator Peak shovel the brand states as UIAA certified. That certification does not transfer to the TerraWest blade or to the MFH shovel at £37.65, the top pick among the shovel-only rows. Who those shovel-only rows are for is on the best avalanche shovel page. If the beacon is out of reach, stay out of avalanche terrain.

Common questions

Is a shovel enough if you cannot afford a beacon yet?
No. SAIS and the Ski Club of Great Britain both treat a transceiver, a probe, and a shovel as the set for skis or a snowboard. A shovel near £40 only moves snow after you know where the person is. Without a beacon you do not know where to start, and the rough 15-minute window is already running. Stay off avalanche terrain until you can buy the beacon.
Does the TerraWest set replace a transceiver?
No. The TerraWest Core Plus at £44.95 is a shovel plus a 240 cm probe in a drawstring bag. There is no beacon in the box. A UK ski-tour guide liked the probe and reported a bent blade in a practice burial, so the set is not a proven rescue shovel either. You still need your own transceiver, switched on, before you leave the car park.
What did the UK review say about that probe and that blade?
On 20 February 2023 a UK ski-tour guide wrote that the TerraWest probe seemed decent, and that the blade bent on the first or second cut of a practice burial in hard then sugary snow. amazon.co.uk shows 3.6 from 8 reviews. One other UK buyer said it arrived as advertised. That is a split note, not a large UK sample.
Why is a beacon kit hundreds of pounds when the shovel is about £40?
The shovel only digs. A beacon kit pays for the search electronics, and often for a probe and a shovel as well. BCA Tracker S on amazon.co.uk was £379.95 with estimated import charges, and Mammut's UK Barryvox 2 Peak 240 package is £420. Those bills are not the price of a £37 to £55 shovel.
Where should the phone be during a search?
Switch it off, not to flight mode. The Eagle Ski Club's summary of UIAA guidance is that a live phone can interfere with the transceivers. If you need to call 999, move about 10 m away, ask for the police and then mountain rescue, and return once the call is made. Do not leave the handset in a pocket on the person walking the signal.
