Snow shovel for a driveway

Updated: 21.10.2026

You come out to a few centimetres of snow on a home drive, and the aluminium shovel in your basket is sold as a snow shovel for a driveway. A driveway shovel is wide enough to push and long enough to stand with, while a car-boot shovel only clears the snow trapping the car. The Products Compared editorial team set these amazon.co.uk listings against UK merchant widths of about 40 cm and shafts around 140 cm, updated this page on 19 October 2026, and did not clear a drive in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices and review rows are on the [aluminium snow shovel comparison](/hub/garden-tools/aluminium-snow-shovel).

A drive is not the snow around the tyres

A driveway and the snow around the tyres are two jobs, and a listing that says driveway often means only the second. Parkers describes a car shovel as smaller than a shed shovel, and as the tool for snow trapping the car. If you only need the tyres clear, the short shovel is enough. If you need the whole drive, the label does not widen the blade. A drive about 3 m wide, cleared with a head about 28 cm across, needs about eleven passes to cover the width once. The wider criteria sit in the aluminium snow shovel buying guide.

About 40 cm and a shaft you can stand with

In the UK trade listings we used, a driveway shovel is about 40 cm wide, with a shaft you can use standing up. English Brothers lists a plastic shovel 40 cm wide with a 140 cm shaft, at £4.99–£5.99. L&S Engineers lists a scoop at 420 mm, RS PRO lists 425 mm, and Atlas lists a 400 mm plastic blade with an aluminium impact edge. Those are merchant examples, not a claim that every aluminium blade is 40 cm. Tooled-Up’s width bands are retailer copy, not a British Standard: 300–400 mm for domestic shovels and 450–500 mm for larger drives. UMUACCAN states a head of 13 by 11 inches, about 33 cm by 28 cm. WORKPRO reaches 120 cm, still short of that 140 cm shaft, and its blade width is not in our UK table.

Gravel and block paving

On gravel, push the snow and stop above the stones. Start Safety UK says to clear early, use a wide blade, and leave the gravel in place, with a skin of snow of about half an inch, roughly 13 mm. That depth is their advice, not a figure from our listings. Plastic is less likely to scoop stones than metal, so an aluminium blade is the worse choice on loose gravel. An aluminium edge can mark block paving if you scrape to the blocks or catch a proud joint. We have not run these shovels along a paved drive, so we will not call one of them safe for your blocks. A flat push that leaves a thin film is the safer pass on fresh snow.

Which of these shovels is only for the car

UMUACCAN is the clearest car shovel in this comparison. The head is 13 by 11 inches, about 33 cm by 28 cm, and the stated lengths are 80 cm and 108 cm. UK reviews describe it as useful around a car, not for a large area, and too short for someone around 171 cm. ztarraum’s short assembled size is about 80 cm by 27 cm, so it will move a sill of fresh snow and will not cover a home drive in a sensible number of passes. WORKPRO’s 120 cm shaft is easier on your back than 80 cm, though the blade width is unpublished and it is still short of 140 cm.

Common questions

Can these aluminium shovels clear a whole drive?
Only if the blade is wide enough to push and the shaft is long enough to stand with. UMUACCAN’s head is about 33 cm by 28 cm, and UK reviews say it suits a car rather than a large area. WORKPRO reaches 120 cm, still short of a 140 cm example such as English Brothers, and its blade width is not in our UK table. These shovels clear snow around the tyres and make a long job of a whole drive.
What blade width are UK driveway shovels?
The trade examples here sit around 40 cm. English Brothers lists 40 cm, L&S Engineers 420 mm, RS PRO 425 mm, and Atlas 400 mm with an aluminium impact edge. Tooled-Up’s retailer bands put domestic shovels at 300–400 mm and larger drives at 450–500 mm. That is shop copy, not a standard. An 11-inch head is about 28 cm, which is a different tool from those scoops.
What should I do on gravel?
Clear the snow early and push it, rather than digging down to the stones. Start Safety UK advises a wide blade, leaving the gravel in place, and leaving about half an inch of snow, roughly 13 mm. That depth is their guidance, not a figure from our listings. Plastic is less likely to scoop stones than a metal edge. Aluminium is stronger on dense snow over a hard surface, and weaker on loose gravel.
Is a car shovel enough for the sill and the tyres?
Yes, when the snow is fresh and you only need the car free. Parkers treats the smaller shovel as the tool for snow trapping the car, and UK reviews say the same of UMUACCAN: useful around a car, too short for a large area if you are about 171 cm tall. A head near 28 cm will clear a sill and the tyres. It will not replace a blade around 40 cm once the rest of the drive is the job.
How long a shaft do I need on a drive?
You need a shaft you can use standing up. The English Brothers example is 140 cm. WORKPRO, the longest reach in this set, stops at 120 cm, and UMUACCAN states 80 cm and 108 cm. A 120 cm shaft is better than 80 cm once you leave the sill, though you still bend compared with 140 cm. A long shaft is also worse to keep in a small boot.
Will a metal edge wreck block paving?
A metal edge can mark block paving if you scrape to the blocks or catch a proud joint. We have not tested these amazon.co.uk shovels on a paved drive, so we will not name one as safe for your blocks. The risk is the scraping, not the word aluminium on the box. A light push that leaves a thin film is the safer pass.
