Stacking chairs buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to buy one stacking chair or a set of four, and the listing is already arguing with itself. A stacking chairs buying guide is the order of checks, not a winner. Read the stack height, the user weight, the indoor or outdoor line, and the standard number on that exact page before you look at the stars. The [stacking chairs comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/stacking-chairs) holds the six amazon.co.uk rows, with prices in pounds on 21 October 2026. Peter F. read those listings and the public UK pages named below, and did not lab-test a chair. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What to read before the price

Start with the job, because a padded reception chair and a metal bistro chair are not interchangeable once the box arrives. On the listing in front of you, find the stack height first. Office Hippo and Jemini print four high. Amazon Basics prints the word stackable and no number. A missing number is not a pass, and it is not a hidden ten. Burgess, a contract maker, says the brochure for that model wins, and that mixed models make a pile unstable. Next, read the user weight on that same page and do not copy it from a neighbour. The reception chairs say 115 kg. The Amazon Basics set says 330 pounds and 149.6 kg, which match each other. Then read indoor or outdoor in the title, the bullets and the attribute together. If those three disagree, you do not have an outdoor chair you can quote. Who each job suits is on best stacking chairs.

What the standard line actually is

Several of these reception listings cite BS EN 15373:2007. NBS records that 2007 document as withdrawn, superseded by BS EN 16139:2013. The current BSI document is BS EN 16139:2025. Its public scope is non-domestic seating for adults up to 110 kg, and it excludes outdoor seating, school chairs, office work chairs, flammability and ageing. A 2007 number on a bullet is not a statement that the chair meets BS EN 16139:2025, and it is not, by itself, proof that the chair is unsafe. We did not run the test. Do not treat 115 kg as that pass. The mesh visitor chair names no EN number. None of the six listings prints BS 7176. Schools use BS EN 1729. A reception seat height of 46.5 cm is an adult figure, not a classroom size mark.

Where these six listings disagree with themselves

On the royal-blue single and on the pack of four, the size line prints 115 kg and also a weight tolerance of 25 kg. Do not average them. The mesh chair prints a user weight of 115 kg and an item weight of 1.1 kg, which is not a credible mass for the frame and stays as printed. Reception seat height is 46.5 cm in the bullets and 49.5 cm on the attributes. Amazon Basics says the set is stackable, the title says indoor and outdoor, the bullets say water and rust resistant, and the attribute says indoor. Three fabric ASINs share one 4.4-from-628 review text. Jemini’s 4.2 from 68 is a separate file, and it includes a broken weld and a collapse. If a line is missing, write it down as missing. Leaving a chair in the rain is on outdoor stacking chairs.

Fire and the room

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover domestic upholstery. A 2025 amendment took effect on 30 October 2025 and did not turn a silent listing into a pass. FIRA’s note is that an upholstered chair sold for the home sits in the domestic rules, while mesh-only is often a question under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 for Great Britain. None of the six pages prints BS 7176. Silence is not a crib rating. Look for a fire label when a padded chair arrives. Stop using a chair whose weld has opened. For a recent purchase the route is the seller, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a home repair. That is a pointer, not legal advice.

Common questions

What should I read first on a stacking-chair listing?
Read the stack height, then the user weight, then whether the title, the bullets and the attribute agree about indoors or outdoors, then the standard number. Price and stars come after those four lines. A missing stack count, as on the Amazon Basics set of four at £126.69, is a gap, not permission to stack as high as the cupboard allows.
Is BS EN 15373:2007 the current standard?
No. NBS records BS EN 15373:2007 as withdrawn, superseded by BS EN 16139:2013, and the current BSI document is BS EN 16139:2025. A listing that still cites 2007 has not shown you a current test report. The 2025 scope is non-domestic seating for adults up to 110 kg, and it excludes outdoor seating, schools, office work chairs, flammability and ageing. Treat the old number as a citation on the bullet. Do not promote it to a pass.
Does 115 kg mean the chair passed BS EN 16139?
No. 115 kg is a figure printed on these reception listings beside BS EN 15373:2007. BS EN 16139:2025 uses a 110 kg basis for adults, and these pages do not claim that 2025 standard. A printed kilogram is not a certificate. The royal-blue size line also prints 25 kg, which is why a single number should not become a test result.
What if the size line says both 25 kg and 115 kg?
Leave both figures on your note and do not average them. The 115 kg line is the one the bullet presents as the user limit, with an eight-hour daily-use claim. The 25 kg figure is printed on the same size line and is unresolved. Until the seller explains it, you cannot honestly quote one limit to a heavier guest.
When does fire performance matter for a padded chair?
It matters for a chair with a fabric or foam seat sold for a home, under the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and it matters for a hall when the premises assessment asks for a contract rating such as BS 7176. None of these six listings prints BS 7176. Check the label when the chair arrives. The amazon page will not answer it for you, and silence is not a crib pass.
