Garden table buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

A UK search for a garden table throws a 48 cm glass side table, a 110 cm cocktail table and a 180 cm trestle into the same list. This garden table buying guide uses the eight amazon.co.uk listings in the [garden table comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-table), priced from about £24.99 to £51.99. The checks run in one order: job, height, top, lock, stated load, then the rows that disagree. Peter F. read those listings on 22 October 2026. There was no laboratory test, and none of the pages prints BS EN 581. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job and the height

The job decides the height, and the height decides whether dining chairs fit. PHI VILLA is 46 x 46 x 48 cm. Taylor & Brown is about 50 cm square. Helios & Hestia’s bullet is 15 in, about 38 cm, a low coffee table. The trestles meant for sitting cluster near 73 cm. A retailer rule of thumb puts dining height around 75 cm. That is not a British Standard. Amazon Basics is 121.4 x 60.7 x 86.1 cm, and one row says four heights while another says three. Byliable is about 110 cm, standing height. The fork between a chair-side table and a long top is on the side table or trestle page.

Then the top, the lock, and the stated load

Tempered glass is on one listing, PHI VILLA at about £31.99. Scratches and a chip are on the glass garden table page. Plastic or HDPE covers the Harbour trestles, Amazon Basics and Byliable. Helios and Taylor & Brown are metal. Stop at a glass chip. A new Harbour plastic top can smell. That is a review theme, not a laboratory figure. Amazon Basics is foldable in the bullets and not foldable in a technical row. Seat the lock before anyone leans. The sequence is on how to set up a folding garden table. Harbour prints 110 kg, Byliable 100 kg, Helios 55 lb. Two listings print no maximum. None of that is BS EN 581-3:2026. Weather-resistant is not an IP rating.

Read the rows that disagree

Do not average rows that cannot both be the open table. Helios prints 18 x 35.5 x 15 in, then 90 x 45 x 38 cm and 45.7 x 90.2 x 38.1 cm. The inches match the second centimetre row only if depth and width swap. The white Harbour 180 cm bullet says 180 x 74 cm at about 73 cm. Another row says 10 x 67 x 99 cm. The black bullet says 180 x 70 x 73.5 cm, and another row says 180 x 180 cm. Both 180 cm files print the same 1,797 reviews and the same sentences, so the black listing is not a fresh sample.

If it arrives faulty

If the table arrives dented, with a lock that will not seat, a bent hinge, or glass already chipped, stop and talk to the seller. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a short-term right to reject, normally for 30 days. Keep photographs and the listing text. In Great Britain the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 expect a safe product, including the instructions. Northern Ireland follows EU Regulation 2023/988 from 13 December 2024. A star rating is not a strength test. None of the eight shows a parasol hole. Which? cites at least 15 kg for a traditional parasol around 2 m, and 50 kg for a 4 m cantilever, and says to take it down in high wind. Do not drill a hole.

Common questions

What height should the table be for dining chairs?
The trestles aimed at sitting are about 73 to 73.5 cm high. A retailer rule of thumb puts dining height near 75 cm, which is not a British Standard. Amazon Basics is listed at 86.1 cm. Byliable is about 110 cm, standing height. Measure your own chair against the edge if the chairs are already in the shed.
Is 48 cm a side table or a dining table?
Forty-eight centimetres is side-table height here. PHI VILLA is 48 cm high and 46 cm across, for a drink beside one seat. Taylor & Brown is about 50 cm. Helios is about 38 cm on the inch bullet. Use a trestle near 73 cm if people will sit and eat.
How many people fit on a 120 cm by 60 cm top?
The Harbour 120 cm listing says four seats. That is a seller line. A retailer rule of thumb allows about 60 cm of edge per person, so one long side is about two places. The top is only 60 cm deep, which is tight for plates opposite. Treat four as drinks, not comfortable dining.
Does weather-resistant mean it can stay out all winter?
No. Weather-resistant, all weather, and indoor-and-outdoor are phrases, not an IP rating and not a winter test. A UK review of PHI VILLA reports rust on the metal rim after rain, against a bullet that says the coat will not rust. The Taylor & Brown light has no IP rating, and UK reviews describe rain in the lamp.
Is a stated 110 kg the same as a British Standard test?
No. Harbour prints 110 kg, Byliable 100 kg, and Helios 55 lb. Those are seller figures. BS EN 581-3:2026 covers strength and stability of outdoor tables for adults, and none of these listings prints it. Amazon Basics and Taylor & Brown print no maximum. A review score is not that test.
