Is a porch joist strong enough for a swing: when to stop

A porch joist is strong enough for a swing only after you find the timber and it can take a moving load. Plasterboard and a decorative pergola fail that test.

The chains are in the box and the hook is in your other hand. The porch ceiling looks continuous, and the listing says the bench weighs 12 kg. Is a porch joist strong enough for a swing? That question belongs to the house. The bench cannot answer it.

The Furinno Tioman, model FG16409SC, is the hanging bench in our comparison, ASIN B06XKRJYKR on amazon.co.uk. On 15 October 2026 the page showed £145.83 and a rating of 4.3 from 555 reviews. The included line is one porch swing, chains are described, and a stand is absent. The bench stays on the ground until a structure you have identified can hold a seat that moves.

In short

A porch joist is strong enough for a swing only after you have found the timber and a competent person is satisfied it can take a moving load. Plasterboard, a soffit, decorative trim, and a decorative pergola fail that test. If you rent, cannot drill, or cannot name the joist, buy a freestanding frame and leave the hanging bench in the search results.

The bench is not the structure

On a hanging swing the bench and the porch are different objects, and only the bench arrives in the carton. 12 kg, on the 15 October 2026 amazon.co.uk scrape, is the Furinno's item weight. The people who sit down are a separate load, and the porch has to carry both while the seat is moving. That figure says nothing about a porch swing ceiling joist, the span, or the fixings.

The same page prints two load lines. The bullets say 156 kg. The table says 220 pounds, about 100 kg. Until the seller confirms one number, keep that lower figure as the bench's unresolved claim and leave 156 kg out of the decision. Display lists two seats. A Furinno Tioman sold with a stand is a different product from FG16409SC.

BS EN 581-1 covers outdoor seating, and published BS EN 581-2 tests use people up to 110 kg, with weathering left out. The listing shows no certificate, and a certificate would still describe the seat rather than your joists. Buying B06XKRJYKR because the chains were included still leaves you without a structure. The porch or freestanding guide holds the choice: a freestanding frame unless that structure check is already done.

A moving load

A swinging point load is the people plus the bench, applied at the hangers, while the seat moves. Ultimate Handyman describes the harsh case as a person and a swing, mid-span on a long unbraced joist. A static weight, such as a person standing still on a floor, is a different problem, and a floor rating does not clear the ceiling.

At rest the hangers pull downward. Once someone pushes off, the seat travels an arc and the pull on the fixing changes through that arc. Mid-span gives the timber more length to bend. Find the joists with a detector, or by opening a board where you are allowed to, and then stop. A bounce only shows a failure after it has begun.

BBC Teach's clip on securing a swing seat spreads the load with a steel plate across more than one joist. The clip is a principle for joists you have found. It gives no bolt diameter for the Furinno, and this page will not invent a multiplier.

A plasterboard swing hook feels finished because the screw head sits flush. If the thread stops in the board, the board is the fixing. A soffit or decorative trim fails the same way. VEVOR's UK porch-swing copy points to a freestanding stand when no beam is in the right place.

What UK voices actually said

MyBuilder's thread on a wooden swing in a new-build ceiling is tradespeople's opinion, and it is not a calculation for the Furinno. A modern joist is often inadequate on its own. Strengthening means opening the ceiling and adding material, so it is invasive. The suggestion on the thread is a structural engineer, because the size and the span stay unknown until that ceiling is opened.

A new-build ceiling is the case where the plaster looks sound and tells you least. Spacing, depth, and design load stay hidden. A pilot hole can find plasterboard, a cable, or a joist you still cannot size.

Garden Furniture Sales tells UK buyers to check a freestanding swing against the space they have and to leave clearance beyond the footprint. The Outsunny listing does not state that arc, so leave a clear path past the feet. Measure a tight patio on the small patio guide. MyBuilder, BBC Teach, and that retail guide will not hand you a timber section to drill to.

Sizes from American articles are not a UK rule

Most pages that rank for this question are American how-tos. Southern Living names a timber section and treats it as enough. DutchCrafters and Sri Decks add joist sizes and a pound capacity. A housing article on a .co.uk address still asks readers to confirm a US-style pound figure, and a seat height in inches, with no section, span, or condition behind the number.

Those figures stay off this page. An American porch is a different timber tradition and a different set of rules. A section size printed beside a British house would look like permission to drill. If that blog is your only evidence, you do not yet know whether your joist is strong enough. Converting the pounds into kilograms does not repair the gap.

When you stop and buy a frame instead

Stop and buy a frame when you cannot see the joist, when the ceiling is only plasterboard, or when the piece you hoped was a beam is a soffit, trim, or a decorative pergola. Stop if you rent and drilling is ruled out, if a new build still hides its joists, if a deck or balcony hides its structure, or if the remedy is to open the ceiling.

The freestanding swing, if you cannot drill, is the Outsunny three-seat model 84A-110CG, ASIN B09TQZZXQQ. On 15 October 2026 it was £180.00 on amazon.co.uk, rated 4.3 from 64 reviews: a charcoal grey alloy-steel A-frame, textilene mesh, an adjustable canopy, and no cushion or cover. The frame is 196 cm wide, 128 cm deep and 172 cm high before the seat swings, and the seat is 142.5 cm by 50 cm.

It weighs 31.5 kg, so two people should build it and leave the bolts short of tight until the feet sit level. That sequence is on the how to assemble page. The maker states 300 kg. That figure is the maker's claim, not a BS EN 581 result.

On that scrape the Furinno was £145.83, about £34 less, and the lower sticker assumes a porch already fit to hang from. A joiner, or a ban on drilling, can erase the gap. Both rows are on the swing bench comparison, and who should skip each one is on the best garden swing bench page.

The freestanding frame still has limits

The Outsunny still needs a level surface, because a canopy on a twisted frame can hold water. Skip it on a balcony, or if you needed a winter cover in the box. A freestanding frame removes the joist question and leaves you with a swinging seat.

If a competent person has already accepted the porch, the Furinno is the hanging bench. Oil dry meranti in a thin coat and wipe off the excess. Treat a cracked slat as a stop. This ASIN has no roof and no stand.

Ask a structural engineer when the joists are hidden or the ceiling has to come open. An unidentified joist sits outside what either listing can promise under Great Britain's general product safety rules. The same practical stop applies in Northern Ireland.

Common questions

Can I screw a hook into the porch ceiling?
Screw a hook into the porch ceiling only after you have found a joist, or a plate across more than one joist, and a competent person is satisfied the timber can take a moving load. A screw that stops in plasterboard is fixed to the board. A soffit and decorative trim fail the same way. BBC Teach's clip shows a steel plate across more than one joist. The hook in the packet does not replace the check.
Is a new-build joist enough?
A new-build joist is enough only when its size, its span, and its design load are known. On MyBuilder, tradespeople say those facts stay hidden until the ceiling is opened, a modern joist is often inadequate, and strengthening is invasive. Their suggestion is a structural engineer. The thread is opinion, and it is not a calculation for the Furinno. While the plasterboard is closed, hanging a porch swing in a new build stays unanswered.
The pergola looks strong. Is that enough?
A decorative pergola is built for shade. Looks are a weak test of a pergola swing load, because the posts, the beam, and the fixings were not shown to you as a support for a moving seat. If you cannot point to that design, leave the chains in the box and use a freestanding frame. A pergola a competent person has accepted is a different structure. This page gives a decorative pergola no load figure to drill to.
What is a swinging load?
A swinging point load is the people plus the bench, applied at the hangers while the seat moves. Ultimate Handyman's harsh case is a person and a swing, mid-span on a long unbraced joist. That is different from a static weight on the floor. This page publishes no multiplier and no bolt size. Standing still under the porch does not clear the ceiling.
Do I need a structural engineer?
Ask a structural engineer when the joists are hidden, when a new build has not been opened, or when the plan is to open the ceiling and add timber. A competent person is the right call if you doubt a joist, a lintel, a beam, or a balcony. You can skip that visit if you buy a freestanding frame and leave the porch undrilled.
The Furinno is only 12 kg. Does that settle it?
Twelve kilograms is the Furinno Tioman's packed weight on the 15 October 2026 amazon.co.uk listing, ASIN B06XKRJYKR. It leaves out the people, and it says nothing about your joist. The bullets say 156 kg and the table says 220 pounds, about 100 kg. Neither line certifies the porch, and there is no stand in the box.
I rent and cannot drill. What do I buy?
If you cannot drill, buy the freestanding Outsunny 84A-110CG, ASIN B09TQZZXQQ, at £180.00 on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. The A-frame is 196 cm wide by 128 cm deep by 172 cm high before it swings, and it weighs 31.5 kg. The Furinno's chains still need a beam. Leave clearance past the feet, because the arc is unstated.
Which page compares hanging and freestanding?
The porch or freestanding guide states the condition: a freestanding frame unless a competent person has already accepted the structure. The swing bench comparison lists the Outsunny and the Furinno from the 15 October 2026 scrape. The best garden swing bench page says who should skip each one. This article stops at the joist and gives you no timber size to drill to.
