How often to check a garden swing: an honest timetable

Neither kept amazon.co.uk swing prints a service interval. What to look at on bolts, chains and hangers, and when that look means you stop using the seat.

The first warm Saturday, you drop onto the swing and the bolt at the left foot clicks as the bench comes back. You cannot remember the last time you put a spanner on it. That is the honest starting point for how often to check garden swing bolts: the two amazon.co.uk swings in our comparison do not print a service interval, so a copied monthly rule would be fiction.

On 15 October 2026 those pages were the Outsunny three-seat canopy swing, model 84A-110CG, at £180.00, and the Furinno Tioman hanging porch swing, model FG16409SC, at £145.83. One is a powder-coated steel A-frame you bolt together. The other is oil-rubbed meranti on chains, with no stand in the box.

In short

Neither kept listing states a service interval, so check bolts, chains and hangers when you maintain the swing in dry weather, after the first sits, and at a winter once-over. Stop for a bent tube, a cracked slat, or rust through the wall. A squeak does not, on these sources, prove the seat has failed.

How often to check garden swing bolts without a printed month

You will not find 'inspect every month' on either page we kept. On 15 October 2026 Outsunny B09TQZZXQQ, model 84A-110CG, left care blank, and so did Furinno B06XKRJYKR, model FG16409SC. Both require assembly. Neither gives tools, a torque, or a return date. £180.00 and £145.83 are that day's stickers, and marketplace prices move.

The Outsunny is a powder-coated alloy-steel A-frame, 196 cm by 128 cm by 172 cm, with a mesh seat of 142.5 cm by 50 cm and an item weight of 31.5 kg. The canopy is included and a cover is not. The maker states 300 kg, with no test certificate and no inspection interval beside it. Chains are not described, so you look at the bolts and the hangers. The rating was 4.3 from 64 reviews.

The Furinno is a 12 kg oil-rubbed meranti hanging bench, rated 4.3 from 555 reviews, with chains claimed and one porch swing in the box. The bullets say 156 kg. The item line says 220 pounds, about 100 kg. Use the lower load until the seller confirms one figure. Powder coat is not a reason to skip orange at a hanger. The swing bench comparison holds both listings. A qualifying purchase through that page can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Bolts, chains, and a swing seat safety check

The Royal Horticultural Society, on garden seats and tables, says check the metal while you maintain the furniture, and do it in dry weather. Oil a joint that needs to move. Treat damaged coating. That is garden swing maintenance for a seat. The page does not name these two models, so it cannot become their missing timetable.

On the Outsunny, look at the A-frame bolts, the hangers, and any chip down to bright metal. If an upright shifts when you push it, align the frame, then tighten. The sources give no 'one more turn', and the scrape gives no torque.

On the Furinno, check swing chains from seat to hanger: a twist, a seized link, or orange at the hook. Porch swing hanger rust on the surface can be touched up in the dry. Rust through the wall is past that. A swing seat safety check here is a stable frame, sound fixings, coating treated while it is still coating, chains only where claimed, and timber that is not cracked.

Online Playgrounds, a commercial play supplier, says to replace a playground chain when the worn link's cross-section is about 60 percent of a link that has not worn. That percentage is for playground chain. The Furinno page states no link diameter, and we measured none. Leave the callipers on the play-equipment page.

A play-set month is a different product

TP Toys publishes aftercare for play equipment. Before each use: a stable frame, anchors, ropes or chains, seat fixings, and no protruding bolts. Monthly: wear, joints, and metal or timber. A fuller look once a year. Structural corrosion means replacement parts, not a wipe. A separate note from the same brand puts garden play kit at least twice a year, in spring and autumn.

A canopy bench and a meranti porch swing are seats. Pasting the before-each-use list onto the Outsunny, or the monthly wear check onto the Furinno, invents a rule these amazon.co.uk pages never printed.

The Outsunny age line says '0 months and up'. That is a catalogue field, not a child-use instruction and not a service interval. If your box is a play set, follow that maker's sheet. If it is 84A-110CG or FG16409SC, the play-set month stays on the play set. These sources do not state a British Standard inspection interval.

After assembly, and again after winter

The build rule is align, then tighten. Bolts stay short of fully tight until the frame is square. The listings do not say new bolts loosen after two weeks, and they do not give a one-turn ritual or a fixed life.

Look again after the first proper sits. A joint closed before the feet were level can move once the 31.5 kg frame is loaded, or once the 12 kg bench starts to swing. That second look is a check, not a printed interval. The order is on how to assemble a swing bench. If you tightened while the frame was crooked, ease the bolts, align, and tighten again.

Merryhatton describes a winter once-over: dry the piece, oil if the wood is dry, and touch up metal. Oil the Furinno only when the meranti is dry, and wipe off the excess. On the Outsunny, treat a powder-coat chip in the dry and dry the steel before any cover. The canopy is included shade. The listing does not say it unclips, and a cover is not in the box list.

Where the bench hangs is a different question, set out on porch or freestanding. An untrusted joist is a reason to stay off until someone competent has looked. This page does not size joists.

Porch swing hanger rust, and when you stop

Stop if a tube is bent, a slat is cracked, or rust has gone through the wall. A squeak is not on that list. Oil is for a joint that needs to move. It does not close a cracked meranti slat or straighten a kinked tube.

Orange at a hanger is a surface fault: treat the coating in the dry. Rust through the wall is a stop, not a wipe. Spares for 84A-110CG are not on the scrape, and a play-frame chain is not a substitute the listing describes.

A bolt proud enough to catch skin is on the play-set before-use list. On a furniture frame you still stop and return the joint to the sheet. The Furinno one-year limited warranty is a seller term, not an inspection clock, so a cracked slat is the same stop inside that year and after it. If you are replacing the bench, the notes beside the comparison separate the freestanding canopy frame from the hanging meranti bench. Neither listing states a fifteen-year life.

A dry-day walk-round you can actually do

Do this on a dry day when you maintain the swing, after the first sits, and at the winter once-over. It follows the RHS metal check and Merryhatton's seasonal pass.

  1. Stand where you can see both A-frame feet, or both porch hangers, and keep the metal dry.
  2. Push each Outsunny upright. If the joint shifts, ease the bolts, align the frame, and tighten.
  3. Treat powder coat that has reached bright metal, and treat orange at a hanger while it is still a surface fault.
  4. On the Furinno, follow each chain. A twist, a seized link, or rust at the hook is the finding.
  5. Stop for a cracked meranti slat. On the mesh seat, look for a frame fault rather than a fabric life the care line never stated.
  6. Before winter, dry the frame, oil meranti only if the wood is dry, wipe off the excess, and touch up bare metal.

Products Compared read the two amazon.co.uk listings on 15 October 2026, the RHS page on garden seats and tables, Merryhatton's winter note, and the play-equipment pages only to mark what does not transfer. We ran no laboratory test.

Common questions

How often should I check the bolts?
Neither listing we kept on 15 October 2026 prints a service interval. Check the bolts in dry weather when you maintain the swing, after the first sits, and at a winter once-over. A play-set page that says monthly is describing play equipment, not these two benches.
Is there a British Standard interval for a garden swing?
These sources do not state a British Standard inspection interval for the two swings. The RHS says check metal on garden seats when you maintain them, in dry weather. Merryhatton describes a winter once-over. TP Toys' monthly list is for play kit. A blank care line does not excuse a bent tube.
The play-set site says monthly. Does that apply?
TP Toys' aftercare is for play equipment: before each use, monthly for wear and joints, and a fuller look once a year. The twice-a-year line is for garden play kit too. If your box is a play set, follow that sheet. The Outsunny and the Furinno do not inherit the monthly rule.
What do I look at on the chains?
The Furinno listing claims chains and gives neither a wear gauge nor a link diameter. Look for a twist, a seized link, and orange at the hanger. The 60 percent cross-section figure from Online Playgrounds is for playground chain. The Outsunny page does not describe chains, so that check stays on the bolts and hangers you can see.
When do I stop using it?
Stop if a tube is bent, a slat is cracked, or rust has gone through the wall. A squeak is not proof of failure on these sources. Oil a joint that needs to move, and treat coating damage while it is still on the surface. Oil does not mend a cracked slat or a holed tube.
Do new bolts loosen after the first weeks?
The listings do not say new bolts loosen after a set number of weeks, and they do not describe a one-turn ritual. Align, then tighten. Look again after the first proper sits, because a joint finished out of square can move once the seat is loaded. The assembly page holds that sequence.
Is a squeak a failure?
A squeak is not, on these sources, proof the swing has failed. Oil a joint that needs to move, on a dry day. Stop for a bent tube, a cracked slat, or rust through the wall. Orange at a hanger is early rust. A holed tube is past a wipe even if the bench still moves.
Which page shows how the first build should have been tightened?
The align-then-tighten order is on the swing bench assembly page. Bolts stay short of fully tight until the frame is square. If you tightened early, ease them, align, and tighten again. The two models sit side by side on the swing bench comparison.
