Consumer rights garden furniture: reject or repair

A faded canopy or a snapped swing is not settled by a short guarantee. What the Consumer Rights Act asks of your UK seller, and where that claim stops.

The canopy has gone pale before autumn, the leg arrived crushed, or a joint has opened before the first hard frost. You still have the amazon.co.uk order, and the seller has pointed at a six-month line and gone quiet.

Consumer rights garden furniture claims in the UK turn on the Consumer Rights Act 2015: was the swing of satisfactory quality for its description and its price? A short guarantee can still be worth using. The contract does not finish when that guarantee does.

The two listings in our swing bench comparison were checked on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. The Outsunny three-seat swing, model 84A-110CG, was £180.00, with 4.3 from 64 reviews, an adjustable canopy included, and MHSTAR named as the seller. The Furinno Tioman hanging swing, model FG16409SC, was £145.83, with 4.3 from 555 reviews, and a warranty line of one year limited. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you.

In short

You claim against the trader who sold the swing, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. For 30 days after delivery you can reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. After that you ask for one repair or one replacement, and a short guarantee on the listing does not replace those rights.

Satisfactory quality

Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 puts satisfactory quality into the contract. A reasonable person judges it by the description, the price, and other circumstances, including a public statement on the listing. A crushed leg in the carton can fail that test.

The term covers state and condition and, where it fits, appearance, safety, and durability. It leaves out a fault you were told about before you paid, and a fault your own examination ought to have shown.

The Outsunny at £180.00 states a 300 kg load, powder-coated steel, and an adjustable canopy. Removal and any warranty period are not stated, and 300 kg is the listing's figure, not a test we ran. The Furinno at £145.83 states meranti and one year limited. The buying guide sets those promises out before you write.

Citizens Advice excludes wear and tear, accident, misuse, and a fault you knew about. A winter pool on the roof is a weak case to call a defect. One Outsunny review reported no frame rust after two winters, which is one garden. This page does not promise a refund for fade, rust, or a puddle.

The first 30 days

You use the 30-day right to reject by telling the trader that you reject the swing and treat the contract as at an end. The faulty garden swing refund is the money you paid, by the same method, within 14 days of the trader agreeing you are entitled, with no fee added. You make the swing available. Reasonable return costs sit with the trader, other than the cost of you carrying it back in person to where you took possession.

On an order you assemble yourself, the 30 days start the day after delivery. Delivered on Saturday 4 April 2026, the window runs from Sunday 5 April through Monday 4 May 2026. Your own build does not delay that start. It waits only if the trader had to install the swing and has not yet said the work is done. A term that shortens the 30 days does not bind you.

Ask for a repair inside the 30 days and the clock pauses until the goods come back. If they still fail, you have seven days, or the old deadline extended by the pause, whichever is later. A change-of-mind return is a different clock, and its postage can be yours.

Repair or replacement

After 30 days, section 23 is one repair or one replacement. You choose. The trader pays labour, materials, and postage, within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience. A torn canopy is often a new cover. A cracked A-frame leg is a poor sewing job. You cannot demand a remedy that is impossible, or one that costs far more than the other for a small fault.

At three months you cannot reject outright unless a longer period was agreed. Section 24 opens after that one attempt fails, if neither remedy can be required, or if the trader misses a reasonable time. You then take either an appropriate price reduction, which can be the full price, or the final right to reject. An on-site repair counts when the trader says it is finished.

Which? described a Robert Dyas bench near £180 that failed within a year, and a £15 offer. That news case is not these listings, and £15 is not a tariff.

Section 19 presumes that a fault showing in the six months from the delivery day was there on delivery, unless the seller proves otherwise or the presumption does not fit. At eight months you prove the quality failed. A final rejection in the first six months is not reduced for use. After that, a deduction for use is allowed.

A short guarantee is extra

Section 30 makes a free guarantee an extra contract from delivery, on the guarantor's conditions. The statement must be in plain English and must say that your statutory rights are unaffected. A six-month line can be the quicker call while it runs. Treating it as the end of the claim gives up the Act for anything the guarantee refuses.

On 15 October 2026 the Furinno listing said one year limited. Read that document before you guess what "limited" removes. The Outsunny listing stated no warranty period. Keep any later offer and the Act in the same letter. If the brand goes quiet, you still claim against the trader you paid.

A contract claim usually has six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and five years in Scotland, normally from delivery. Those deadlines limit when you may sue. They do not promise that a £145.83 or £180.00 swing still looks new in year five.

Who you claim against

Claim against the seller on your order. On 15 October 2026 the Outsunny listing named MHSTAR, with Outsunny as the brand. Use the brand for a guarantee it actually gave. Use Amazon when Amazon sold it. A private, non-trader sale is narrower, in Northern Ireland and in the rest of the UK. The trader's carrier keeps the risk until the swing is in your hands, or with someone you named to receive it.

Photograph the carton and the damage before you build. At 31.5 kg and 196 cm, this Outsunny is a collection, not a car-boot return. The assembly guide follows the sheet in the box. A bench pulled out of plasterboard is a fixing, which the porch or freestanding guide keeps apart from a fault in the seat.

  1. Photograph the fault and keep the order number and the delivery date.
  2. Write to the seller on the amazon.co.uk order and name the remedy first.
  3. Inside 30 days, if it does not conform, say you reject it and end the contract.
  4. After 30 days, ask for a repair or a replacement at the seller's cost.
  5. If that fails, choose a price reduction or the final right to reject.

Amazon's own third-party process has moving deadlines, so it sits beside that letter. A seller outside the UK can be slower to pursue. Start with the trader named on the order either way.

This page is not advice on your contract

Products Compared is not a law firm, and this is not advice on your order. The Act applies across the UK. Citizens Advice has the England steps and the Scotland and Wales versions. The Consumer Council covers the same headings for Northern Ireland, including the narrower private sale. Nothing here decides your fade, rust, or puddle.

On 15 October 2026 we recorded two amazon.co.uk listings, their GBP prices, review counts, and warranty lines. We did not weather a canopy or load a frame. The points above are from sections 9, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24 and 30, from Which?, and from Citizens Advice and the Consumer Council.

If the seller stalls, use the advice service for your nation before a claim form. A later court claim has its own fee, and the form depends on where in the UK you live. Keep every reply the seller sends.

Common questions

The canopy faded. Is that unsatisfactory quality?
Appearance, finish and durability are aspects of satisfactory quality under section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A reasonable person judges them against the description and the price. Some colour change on a polyester canopy left in British sun is ordinary weathering. Fade that arrives much sooner than that price and that description would suggest can still be unsatisfactory. This page cannot sort one canopy from the other. Keep dated photos and the listing text you bought from.
The seller offered a six-month guarantee. Is that my only right?
A guarantee is an extra obligation. Section 30 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says it takes effect on the guarantor's own conditions, and the statement should say that your statutory rights are unaffected. A six-month promise can be useful inside those six months. It leaves a claim for unsatisfactory quality open after that. On the Furinno listing in our comparison the warranty line is one year limited. On the Outsunny listing no warranty period is stated. An empty warranty field is not a waiver of the Act.
It arrived damaged. Who pays?
When the seller arranged delivery, the swing stays at the trader's risk until it is in your physical possession. Photograph the carton and the damage before you build, and tell the seller. Inside the 30-day period you can reject goods that do not conform. Section 20 says the trader bears reasonable costs of returning rejected goods, apart from the cost of you carrying them back in person to the place where you took possession. On an amazon.co.uk order you make the swing available and the seller organises collection.
I have had it for three months. Can I reject it outright?
The short-term right to reject lasts 30 days, counted from the day after delivery. At three months that right has ended, unless you and the seller agreed a longer time. You can still require a repair or a replacement. The seller must do that within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience, and must bear necessary costs, including postage. If that one attempt fails, or they miss a reasonable time, you then choose a price reduction or the final right to reject. Section 24 lets you use one of those.
It broke after eight months. What changes?
The six-month presumption in section 19 has ended. For six months beginning with the day of delivery, goods that do not conform are taken not to have conformed on that day, unless the seller shows they did, or the presumption does not fit the failure. After that you show the fault was in the quality of the swing, rather than wear, an accident, or misuse. A claim can still succeed. Which? reported a Robert Dyas bench near £180 that failed inside a year, and a £15 offer. That news case is not these amazon.co.uk listings.
Do I claim from Outsunny or from Amazon?
You claim from the trader who sold you the swing. On the Outsunny listing in this swing bench comparison, checked on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026, the seller line is MHSTAR and the brand is Outsunny. Your own order page is the one that counts, because a seller can change. Use the brand as well when a guarantee from that brand is worth calling on. Use Amazon when Amazon is the seller named on your order. A marketplace process, where Amazon offers one, has its own conditions and sits beside the Act.
What if I left it out all winter with a pool on the roof?
Citizens Advice says these rights do not cover wear and tear, an accident, misuse, or a fault you already knew about. A canopy holding a pool has been used as a roof, and a winter of standing water can split a seam or stain a frame. One Outsunny review reported no frame rust after two winters. That is one garden, not a test, and it does not decide a later claim. If the seam failed in the first wet week, send the dates and the photos.
Where do I go if the seller stalls?
Write once more with the order number, the photos and the remedy, and keep a copy. Citizens Advice publishes the faulty-goods steps for England, with nation versions for Scotland and Wales. In Northern Ireland the Consumer Council sets out the same Act headings and notes that a private sale is narrower. The usual limit for a contract claim is six years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and five years in Scotland. That deadline is for starting a claim. It is not a promise the swing lasts six years.
