How to choose an aluminium folding chair

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at an aluminium folding chair on amazon.co.uk and the results do not agree with each other. One row is a director's chair near 2 kg, another is a Textilene recliner at 8 kg, and two listings in this set only say metal. This page sets the order of checks. It does not name a winner. The eight listings are on the [aluminium folding chair comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/aluminium-folding-chair). Who should skip each row is on the [best aluminium folding chair](/hub/garden-furniture/aluminium-folding-chair/sub/aluminium-folding-chair-best) page. If the frame might be steel, use [aluminium vs steel folding chair](/hub/garden-furniture/aluminium-folding-chair/sub/aluminium-folding-chair-aluminium-vs-steel). Carry weights are on the [lightweight aluminium camping chair](/hub/garden-furniture/aluminium-folding-chair/sub/aluminium-folding-chair-for-camping) page. What counts as an aluminium folding chair

An aluminium folding chair, in this folder, is a director's chair, a low camping chair or a Textilene recliner, and the frame row has to say aluminium. Outsider, Garden Pride, both Hyfive rows and the Grand patio recliner do that. Ever Advanced's bullet says a powder-coated steel and aluminium frame, so you should not file that pair as aluminium only. Boosden and HomlyPro print Metal. That word is not a confirmation, and those two rows belong on the versus page if the metal is why you searched.

Load, seat height and weight

Read the printed load against 110 kg, because BS EN 581-2:2026 tests are based on persons up to 110 kg, and weathering sits outside that test. None of the eight listings cites BS EN 581, so a seller kilogram line is not a lab pass and not a certificate. Garden Pride and Grand patio print no load at all. If you need a number before you sit a heavier adult, those two pages do not give you one. Seat height is the next check, and it is not the overall height of the chair. Garden Pride prints 45 cm. Ever Advanced prints 50 cm. Outsider's seat-height row prints 82 cm, the same figure as the chair height of 48 x 60 x 82 cm, and UK reviews call that seat low. Do not treat 82 cm as a sitting height. Carry weight then splits the set. Hyfive's single is 2 kg, Garden Pride 2.1 kg and Outsider 2.52 kg. Ever Advanced's bullet says 6.1 kg with a bag and the item row says 13.5 kg. Grand patio is 8 kg.

Fabric, fold and rain

Canvas, Oxford and Textilene are not the same surface, and none of these listings gives you a waterproof rating you can quote. Hyfive reviews in the file include torn seats, loose joints and a short leg, so the fabric can fail before the tube. Ever Advanced's highlight says 6 cm of padding, while UK reviews say about 2 cm or that the padding feels absent, and one buyer returned the chairs as too hard. Textilene on the Grand patio chair is mesh, not a cushion. Rain is a care question. Aluminium does not red-rust the way bare steel does, but a chipped powder coat still wants a touch-up, and salt on the coast wants a rinse. Dry the fabric before you put a cover on. Garden Pride asks whether the chair is weatherproof and does not answer.

What this guide will not decide

This page will not name a top pick. The score on the comparison is stars and review count only: stars divided by five, times 70, plus up to 30 from the log of the review count. Price is not inside that sum. The score does not measure strength, rust, or whether 6 cm of foam is really there. Steel chairs removed from the folder are not scored on the main table. That choice sits on the versus page.

Common questions

Is the frame actually aluminium?
Only when the frame row says aluminium. In this set that is Outsider, Garden Pride, both Hyfive listings and Grand patio. Ever Advanced's bullet says steel and aluminium together, so the pair is mixed. Boosden and HomlyPro say metal, which you should not upgrade to aluminium because the title looks like a camping chair. If the material row is blank or says metal, treat the metal as unknown and read the versus page before you compare the pound prices.
What does 110 kg in BS EN 581-2 mean for these chairs?
The 110 kg figure is the test person in BS EN 581-2:2026, not a load printed on these amazon.co.uk pages. Outsider prints 159 kg, Ever Advanced 150 kg, Hyfive 120 kg and HomlyPro 100 kg. Garden Pride and Grand patio print none. Boosden prints 100 kg and also 330 pounds. None of the eight cites the standard, so a higher seller line is not evidence that the chair passed that test, and weathering is outside the test anyway.
What is a normal director's-chair seat height?
In this folder Garden Pride prints 45 cm and Ever Advanced prints 50 cm. Other UK shop listings in the research, which are not these ASINs, sit around 44 cm. That band is the useful comparison when you want your feet on the ground at a table. Outsider's 82 cm row matches the overall height of the chair, and reviews call the seat low, so it is not a normal sitting height you should plan a dining table around.
Is a 5.0 from two reviews enough?
Not for the best-value rule used here, which asks for 4.3 or above and at least 50 reviews. Garden Pride is 5.0 from two reviews at £29.99 and scores 73 on that basis. Hyfive's single is 4.4 from 214 at £49.99. The smaller sample can still be the chair you want if the seat height and the weight suit you. It is not the stronger evidence, and a sales rank in Director's Chairs does not replace the review count.
Which question should I answer before I look at stars?
The frame, then the printed load, then the sitting height, then the carry weight, then the fabric. Stars are a sample size, not a strength test, and the score in this folder does not include the price. If the frame row does not say aluminium, a high star line cannot repair that. Open the eight-row table only after those checks, and use the best page when you want the top pick and the best value named inside this set.
