Garden fountain winter

Updated: 22 October 2026

A hard frost is forecast and the resin fountain is still full. Garden fountain winter care for this set is a drain and a pump put somewhere it will not freeze. It is not a product pick. The nine listings are the [Fountain garden](/hub/garden-decor/fountain-garden) comparison. In that set the slate solar tier is the top pick and the curved mains unit is the best value. A plug or a panel does not change the ice. Peter F. read the listings on 22 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listing's frost line does not say

Four of the nine listings print UV and frost protected: RJ-19048-UK, RJ-19041-UK, PT-SF0001 and PT-SF0002. The words do not name a British Standard, and they do not tell you to leave the 9 litre or 7.5 litre bowl full through January. Haddonstone's care note makes the same distinction for frost-resistant cast stone: the body can be described as frost resistant and the water still has to come out. Their tennis-ball note is a mild-frost idea for stone, not the method for these resin shells. The other five do not use that phrase. The S-shape talks about sun, rain and temperature changes. The solar bowl says weather-resistant. The copper falls talks about typical UK weather. Standing water expands when it freezes. Garden Ornaments' note on resin says that expansion can crack a hollow body. The shells here are about 5.3 to 9 kg.

Drain, then the pump

Empty the reservoir before a hard frost. Tip or siphon it onto the border, not across a path that will ice overnight. A 7.5 or 9 litre Teamson bowl is a jug job. Listings that never state a capacity still hold water you can see. If you cannot see the bottom, it is not drained. Disconnect the pump only after the supply is off. On the solar tiers, do not leave a pump in a bowl you meant to empty while the panel still has charge. Store the pump where it will not freeze, after you clean the grit you can reach. Haddonstone's sheet says remove the pump, clean it and keep it frost-free, including the impeller. Garden Ornaments describe a bucket of water so the seals stay wet. That bucket is a poor idea if it will freeze in the same shed. Do not merge the two instructions into a single rule.

If the shell stays outside

A light resin shell can follow the pump under cover. At about 5 to 9 kg these pieces are liftable, though a 98 cm body is awkward on stairs. The Teamson mains item-weight fields sit at about 5.4 kg. The slate solar tier's item weight is 6 kg. If the shell stays outside, it stays empty. A cover over a full bowl traps the water you were supposed to remove. Empty the bowl, store the pump, and only then cover an empty shell if you want to keep leaves out. The lift is not a guarantee the shell will not chip.

Nothing from the garage shelf

Do not add antifreeze so the fountain can stay full. RSPCA winter advice says never use antifreeze or salt to thaw a pond, a bird bath or a water container that animals use. Cats, birds and hedgehogs can reach a bowl at 72 to 98 cm. PDSA warns that ethylene glycol antifreeze is dangerous to cats. This set's care is drain and store, not dose. Household bleach is the other bottle to leave in the kitchen. Altico's care notes say not to use bleach in a bowl wildlife can drink. Salt has the same problem as antifreeze around animals. You level and refill when you bring the pump out, on the how to set up a garden water feature page, with the pump covered before it runs.

Common questions

Does frost protected mean the fountain can stay full all winter?
No. On the four Teamson listings that use UV and frost protected, the line does not name a standard and does not say to leave the bowl full. The other five listings do not use the phrase. Standing water can still crack a hollow resin body. Drain it before a hard frost. A cover over a full bowl does not replace that drain.
What do you do with the pump?
Switch off, empty the bowl, then store the pump where it will not freeze. Clean grit you can reach. Frost-free and dry matches the remove-and-clean advice in pump-care notes. A submerged bucket is one retailer's method for seals, and it only works if that bucket itself cannot freeze. Do not leave the pump in a bowl you meant to drain.
Can you add antifreeze so you do not have to drain it?
No. RSPCA advice is not to use antifreeze or salt on ponds, bird baths and water containers animals use. Ethylene glycol is dangerous to cats. A garden fountain bowl is open water at roughly 72 to 98 cm, or lower where it splashes. Drain and store the pump instead of dosing the bowl.
Should a 6 kg resin fountain come indoors?
It can. This set is about 5.3 to 9 kg, which is light enough that Garden Ornaments describe lifting resin under cover. Drain first. A 98 cm shell is awkward on stairs even when the weight is only about 5.4 to 6 kg on the Teamson item-weight fields. If you leave it outside, leave it empty. The lift is not a guarantee the shell will not chip.
Is winter the same job as the first-day setup?
No. Setup is a level base, water over the pump, then power, including a 2 to 3 day first charge on the Teamson solar tiers. Winter is the reverse only in the sense that you remove water and the pump. You do not refill until you are ready to run it again.
Where do algae and bleach belong?
Not on this page. Bleach is the wrong cleaner in a bowl wildlife can reach, and salt and antifreeze are the same kind of mistake. Green water in the running season is a separate clean. The winter job is an empty bowl and a pump stored above freezing.
