Manual or petrol post driver

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are choosing between a manual tube at about £37 to £42 and a petrol listing at about £156.72 or about £429.99. A manual or petrol post driver decision follows the length of the run and the facts printed on the ASIN. Use a manual tube when the post fits and the run is short. Treat the two petrol listings as unspecified machines, not as the Honda-class driver you can hire. The cards are on the [pile driver comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/pile-driver). Criteria are on the [fence post driver buying guide](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/pile-driver/sub/pile-driver-buying-guide). A short run of fitting stakes

For a dozen T-posts or tree stakes that enter the bore, the rational buy is a manual tube at about £36.99 to about £41.85. You supply the blows. There is no fuel ratio to get wrong. The Yarlung tube states 7.88 kg. The other three manuals sit around 2.8 kg to 3.5 kg. That is a mass limit, not a reason to jump to petrol for a short garden line. A 4x4 does not become a petrol job by budget alone. The pick among the manuals is on best fence post driver.

What the £156.72 listing actually states

Generic B0HJ6WFQ57 is titled as a 32.7 cc two-stroke at 900 W. The bullets state 20–45 J, sockets of 2.17 inches and 2.76 inches, a mixing bottle and soft ground. There is no customer-review line. The technical block says 1 g, a package of 1 × 1 × 1 cm, and power source ac. That block cannot be used. The fuel ratio is not stated. A mixing bottle does not tell you 50:1, 25:1 or anything else. You know two stated sockets. You do not know the weight, the mix, or whether anyone has started it.

What the £429.99 listing adds, and what it still omits

Gdetnysty B0H1G51HG3 adds a stated item weight of 14.3 kg and a tank stated as 0.24 gal. That gallon figure is the listing’s unit. This page does not convert it and then treat the conversion as a measured capacity. Socket diameters are not stated, so you cannot match a post. The fuel ratio is not stated. The page prints 120 volts beside gas powered, which is a conflict, not a 120 V tool. The title says concrete jack hammer, and the file has no breaking specification. You still lack the opening and the oil ratio.

Hiring a specified driver is a different comparison

Herts Tool Co. hires a Honda GX35 driver with sleeves of 52 mm, 78 mm and 107 mm, at £35.80 a day plus VAT with a three-day minimum. Three days is £107.40 before VAT. That sum sits below both petrol shelf prices here, and it hires a different machine. Delivery, a deposit and VAT are extra. Portek prints 25:1 for its own driver, and Husqvarna prints 50:1 for its hedge trimmers unless their manual differs. Neither ratio belongs in these tanks. Short run, post fits: buy the manual. A known sleeve: hire the driver whose sleeves are published. Do not start either engine on a guessed mix.

Common questions

What do I actually know about the £156.72 driver?
You know the bullets: 32.7 cc, 900 W, 8,500 rpm, 20–45 J, sockets at 2.17 inches and 2.76 inches, a mixing bottle, soft ground, and a pull start. You do not know a review, a fuel ratio, or a usable weight. The 1 g, 1 cm package and ac lines contradict the title and should be ignored rather than believed. There is no evidence in this file that anyone has used it.
Why is the £429.99 driver not simply the better petrol tool?
It states 14.3 kg and a longer kit, including a funnel and a filter nozzle, which the cheaper petrol page does not match. It still omits socket diameters and the oil ratio, it has no reviews, and it prints 120 volts on a gas-powered listing. A higher price and a higher stated mass do not repair a missing opening. You would be paying for a kit list you cannot match to a post.
What fuel do I mix?
Only the ratio in the manual for that engine. These two listings do not print one. A bottle in the box is not a ratio. Do not copy Husqvarna’s 50:1 hedge-trimmer mix or Portek’s 25:1 post-driver mix onto them. If you cannot find the ratio, do not guess and do not start the engine. A seized two-stroke is the usual result of a wrong mix.
Is hire cheaper than buying the £430 listing?
Three days at the Herts rate is £107.40 before VAT, because the minimum is three days at £35.80. That arithmetic is below about £429.99 and below about £156.72 before you add VAT, delivery or a deposit, and it hires a Honda-class driver with stated sleeves, not the Gdetnysty or Generic tool. It can be the better spend when you need those sleeves once. It is a different product, so the sums are not a discount on the Amazon listing.
Does jack hammer in the title mean it breaks concrete?
No. The Gdetnysty title uses concrete jack hammer as wording. The file gives no concrete-breaking specification, no joule figure, and no review of breaking a slab. The Generic bullets say pile driving on soft ground only. Neither listing prints decibels, so you also cannot call either tool quiet. Read the title as marketing until a specification says otherwise.
