Grout pen buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

The joints look tired, and you have not chosen a colour or a pack yet. This grout pen buying guide is the decision order for the [Grout pen](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/grout-pen) listings captured on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, from about £4.90 to £12.60. A pen coats sound grout. It does not fill a gap, stick a loose tile, or cure a leak. Work through the joint, then the colour in daylight, then the nib and the spares, then where the pen will live, and only then the price. A named top pick and a cheaper white alternative are on the [best grout pen](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/grout-pen/sub/grout-pen-best) page. Peter F. scored these listings, not a lab, and amazon.co.uk links may earn a commission.

Start with the joint, not the pack

Buy the pen for the joint you already have. Sound grout is firm under a thumbnail, still bonded, and dirty or yellow rather than missing. Crumbling joints, loose tiles, or a damp patch on the other side of the wall need a tiler. Powder on a plastic card means the line has failed. Floors and shower trays wear a thin coating off in patches, and the black edge at a tray is often silicone. That split is on the grout pen shower page.

Match the colour in daylight

Match the grout you want to see, not the tile body. White paint on grey grout makes a white line whether you wanted one or not. Most packs here are white. Light grey is Flintronic at about £8.98 and Sinofort at about £4.90. There is no cream pen in the twelve. Flintronic’s colour codes do not match, and one Sinofort bullet still says white. A cap colour is not the dried line.

Nib width and spare tips

The nib has to fit the joint or you stain the tile. Ideal Home flags a tip wider than the grout. DCYQAIN is the only listing here that states a width: a 2 mm nylon tip at about £5.19, and it does not say how many spares are in the box. Spare nibs matter because tips splay before the liquid is used. QHSXMQ states eight. Sinofort states twelve. A two-pack with no stated spare is a small job only. Elixvane’s reversible nibs sit beside 1.0 from one review.

What the price bands actually buy

Shelf prices run from about £4.90 to £12.60. QHSXMQ is about £5.99. A dried-out pen is a satisfactory-quality question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9. Flintronic at about £8.98 and DRTRU at about £9.99 buy a larger sample, not a guarantee. UniBond at about £12.60 buys the brand method and 20,843 reviews.

A five-point check before you order

The grout is sound, cleanable and dry. A dried dab matches a colour this set sells. A spare nib is in the box. The room matches the claim: a splashback is a fair trial and a shower floor is a weak one. The review count can support the price. White and documented points to UniBond. White spares at about £5.99 point to QHSXMQ. Grey points to Flintronic or Sinofort after a corner test. Powder means you stop. Marker, colourant and new grout are compared on grout pen vs grout paint.

Common questions

Will white look wrong on cream or yellowed grout?
It often does. DRTRU reviews, 3.6 from 367 on amazon.co.uk, call the white very bright against existing grout. Yellowed grout can take white if you want it to look newly white, and cream grout will show a hard edge where the pen is whiter than the rest. Dry a short line in daylight before you commit the wall. This set has no cream pen.
Do I need grey, silver, or black instead?
Use light grey when the joint was never white. Flintronic (about £8.98, 3.8 from 1,747) and Sinofort (about £4.90, 4.1 from 31) are the light-grey packs, and both have messy colour wording on the listing, so test them. PEAKTOP silver at about £4.98 is a contrast colour, which suited one buyer after the tiles were painted grey. Jiyeo is black at about £5.99 and has no reviews in this file.
How wide a tip do I need for a narrow joint?
Only DCYQAIN states a width: a 2 mm nylon tip at about £5.19, with no review line. If your joint is about 2 mm, that is the only pack you can check against a number. Wider joints may need a broader nib face, and most listings here do not state one. A tip wider than the joint stains the tile, which Ideal Home flags as the usual mistake.
Is a 12-pack better than two pens?
A twelve-pack is better when tips wear out, which Sinofort buyers describe, and one floor job used only two pens from twelve. It is worse when the colour is wrong, because you then own twelve pens you will not use. Two pens, as with DCYQAIN, suit a test line and a short repair if the first nib survives. They are a poor room kit once a tip splays.
What if the listing has no star rating?
Treat Jiyeo and DCYQAIN as unreviewed in this capture. You can still read the tip width, the colour, and the waterproof wording, and you cannot quote a UK buyer. Elixvane’s single 1.0 review is barely stronger: it says the pens do not work, and there is no second opinion in the file. A missing rating is a reason to prefer a pack you can actually read reviews for.
When should I not buy a pen at all?
Do not buy one when the grout powders, tiles are loose, mould keeps returning in the same place, or a shower leaks to the room below. Do not buy one for the silicone seal at a bath or tray. A large floor can be a colourant job or a regrout, which the versus page separates from a marker. A pen is for a sound joint you can clean and dry.
