How to choose a flagpole

Updated: October 2026

You are in a UK garden, or on a terrace with no lawn, and every listing is called a flagpole. A 6 ft bracket, a spike, a 20 ft sleeve kit, an indoor stand and a feather pole are five different products. How to choose a flagpole is that order, before any brand is ranked. The [flagpole comparison](/hub/flags/flagpole) rows twelve amazon.co.uk listings, from about £10.99 to about £69.99 on 19 October 2026. This page walks mount, then height, then a rope, then the box, then the base. We compared those listings and the Planning Portal. We did not run a lab trial.

Choose the mount before the brand

The mount is the product. A wall bracket, a five-prong spike, a ground sleeve, a weighted indoor base and a feather pole do not stand in for one another. UK maker guides split ground poles from wall poles for space, and for the direction the flag has to be seen from. Their one-piece masts are a different class from the sectional kits here. If you have no lawn, stop at the wall kits. A 20 ft sleeve does not become the right pole because it has more reviews.

Check the height before you buy 20 ft

The Planning Portal’s ordinary answer for an English garden is one flagpole up to 4.6 metres without an application. Taller than that, or a conservation area or a listed building, is a different case, on flagpole planning permission. A full 20 ft kit is about 6.1 metres. A 5 ft or 6 ft wall pole sits under that figure and can still be wrong on a listed building. The NQ 20 ft kit states 8–20 ft. Eight feet can sit under 4.6 m; the full setting does not. laloohome is titled 8.5 ft, and two reviewers measured about 8 ft and about 8 ft 10 in. None of these listings states a wind speed or a British Standard.

A rope is what lets you half-mast

Only Thanaddo, the NQ 20 ft kit and iElyiEsy include a rope and a pulley. The NQ kit includes 38 ft of nylon rope. iElyiEsy includes a 41 ft rope. Wall kits, both spikes, the feather pole and the indoor stand have no halyard. Clips hold a flag out. They do not give you half-mast, and reviewers still report wrapping. If you need to half-mast, you are looking at those three sleeve kits, and the broader white diagonal must sit above the red in the upper corner nearest the pole. The steps are on how to fly the Union Flag.

Read what is in the box

The three tall kits include at least one UK flag and a PVC sleeve. Wall kits and both spikes do not. The Anley title excludes the feather flag and the stand. The indoor stand includes embroidered flags and is still an indoor product. One UK text on iElyiEsy says the flag arrived upside down. HoldOneLight is 5.0 from one rating with no review text. A terrace that already owns a flag can buy a pole-only bracket.

The base has to match the wall or the ground

On the wall kits, the supplied plugs are what failed. NQ 5 ft owners say they pull out of brick until larger ones are fitted. The same pattern appears on Mavivegue and the stainless Weciau. No listing states a pull-out load. Check for cables and pipes before you drill. A PVC sleeve is not pushed in. Reviewers say it needs concreting or the pole moves. Before you dig, search LSBUD and follow HSE HSG47, then hand-dig. Mounts are compared on wall flagpole or garden flagpole. A five-prong spike is not that sleeve.

Which job you are left with

A terrace is a short wall pole. A lawn where the height is checked is a sleeve kit with a rope. A hall is the indoor stand, and only two people have reviewed it. A shop that already owns a teardrop flag and a base is the Anley pole.

Common questions

How do I choose a flagpole for a house with no lawn?
Start with a wall bracket of about 5–6 ft, not a sleeve kit. The NQ 5 ft pole and the £10.99 wall kits include neither a flag nor a rope, and brick often needs larger plugs than the packet supplies. A 20 ft kit needs a lawn you can dig.
Is a 20 ft flagpole too tall for a UK garden?
A full 20 ft kit is about 6.1 metres. The Planning Portal’s ordinary English answer is one garden flagpole up to 4.6 metres without an application. The NQ 20 ft listing also states an 8 ft setting, about 2.4 m. That short setting is not automatically lawful on a listed building or in a conservation area.
Does the kit include a Union Flag?
Thanaddo includes a Union flag and an England flag. The NQ 20 ft kit includes a 3x5 ft Union Flag and an England flag. iElyiEsy includes one 3x5 British flag. The indoor stand includes embroidered versions of both. Wall kits, spikes and the Anley pole leave the flag out.
Is a spike base the same as a ground sleeve?
No. The PVC sleeve with Thanaddo, the NQ 20 ft kit and iElyiEsy is what reviewers set so the pole can stand and later lift out. laloohome and Sibosen are five-prong spikes pushed into the lawn. Use a spike only if you will take the pole down, and expect to concrete a sleeve.
What should I check before the sleeve goes into the lawn?
Search LSBUD and follow HSE HSG47, then hand-dig. This page does not give a trench method or a concrete mix. Check 4.6 metres before a full 20 ft setting. If the house is listed, or you are unsure what is under the lawn, ask the local authority rather than improvising the hole.
