Clear silicone sealant: decide the job before the price

Updated: 2026-10-23

You are about to reseal a bath, a basin or a short gap, and the clear cartridges on amazon.co.uk sit between 4.1 and 4.7 stars. That band will not tell you whether the tube is a sanitary bead, a 70 g repair or a fish-tank silicone. Clear silicone sealant here is a moisture-curing joint sealant that stays transparent. Most named trade products smell of vinegar while they cure, and they are not paintable. The [Silicone clear comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/silicone-clear) is the product table. Prices and stars are the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk snapshot. This page is the order of decisions. The editorial team did not lab-test these cartridges. What to decide before you compare clear silicone sealant

Sort by the joint, not the star line. A £4.75 squeeze tube and a £7.91 sanitary cartridge can both say clear and score above 4.4. Decide the job, then whether a fungicide is stated, then the chemistry, then movement, then whether the tube count matches the weight. A bath or shower wants fungicidal sanitary silicone. A letterbox or a short chip can live with a small tube. Aquarium glass wants marine silicone with no fungicide to leach. BS EN 15651 part 1 is façade joints, part 2 glazing, part 3 sanitary joints. Everbuild general-purpose clear has declarations for parts 1 and 3. A 2024 UKCA declaration records reaction to fire Class E for part 1. Class E is that fire result. It does not fire-stop a wall. Where the display leaves the standard blank, leave it blank.

Sanitary bead, small repair, or aquarium glass

Stay Clear, on the bathroom page, is £7.91, 4.5 from 587 reviews: acetoxy, sanitary, ±25%, BS EN 15651-3:2012. It will not take paint and it is not for aquariums. EVO-STIK 1 Hour, £6.49, is the only listing that says ready in one hour. Everbuild general-purpose clear, £6.00, 4.5 from 7,669 reviews, has a fungicide and ±12.5%, and the sheet excludes aquarium manufacture. The 151 tube, 70 g at £4.75, states no fungicide and no EN 15651 class. HA6, on the aquarium page, is £4.95 for one cartridge and £11.00 for three. The sheet specifies no fungicides that might leach. The three-pack is the top pick and the single cartridge is the best value for that marine silicone, not as a shower sealant.

Acetoxy, movement, and how much is in the tube

The vinegar smell is acetic acid from an acetoxy cure on the Everbuild, Stay Clear, Soudal and HA6 sheets. Keep it off natural stone, bitumen and lead. Everbuild also excludes a double-glazed edge and a uPVC perimeter. None of these eleven listings is neutral-cure silicone. Everbuild states ±12.5%. Stay Clear and Soudal state ±25%. On a 6 mm joint that is about 0.75 mm either way at 12.5%, and about 1.5 mm at 25%. A plastic bath that shifts when filled wants the higher figure. One cartridge is about 10 metres of a 6 mm bead. Stay Clear cures about 3 mm in 24 hours. Everbuild cures about 2 mm. Only 1 Hour claims the shower the same evening.

When the pack photo is not the pack

The Soudal three-pack is £12.31. The specification says three, the weight is 1.14 kg, and stars are 4.1 from eight reviews. Two reviews say the photo shows four tubes. The sheet gives ±25% and says it is not paintable and not for natural stone. The £12.95 title says 6 pack, the part number ends in X6, the specification says one item and the weight is 310 g. Do not divide that price by six until the live count and the weight agree. Everbuild’s six-pack at £20.11 states six cartridges of 280 ml. The twelve-pack title at £28.98 states anti-fungal behaviour and ±12.5%, while the unit count says 1. Extra tubes are the same silicone.

Common questions

What should you check on a clear silicone cartridge before the price?
Check the job, then whether a fungicide is stated, then whether the cure is acetoxy, then the movement class, then the real tube count. A clear colour and a star rating between 4.1 and 4.7 do not separate a shower bead from a fish-tank silicone. Use the price only after the listing’s pack count matches the weight.
Is clear silicone the same as sanitary silicone?
Clear describes the colour. Sanitary, in this set, means a fungicidal sealant aimed at baths, showers and basins, such as EVO-STIK Stay Clear or Everbuild general purpose with its sanitary declaration. The 151 tube at 70 g mentions a shower on the surface line and states no fungicide and no EN 15651 class. That does not make it a sanitary cartridge.
What is the vinegar smell, and when is acetoxy the wrong chemistry?
The smell is acetic acid from an acetoxy cure. It is normal on the trade sheets here, and you need ventilation while it lasts. That chemistry suits glass and glaze. Keep it off natural stone, bitumen and lead, and keep Everbuild general purpose off a double-glazed edge and a uPVC perimeter. Neutral-cure clear silicone is a different product and it is not in this table.
How far does one cartridge go, and when is a 70 g tube enough?
On the Everbuild and Stay Clear sheets, one cartridge is about 10 metres of a 6 mm bead. A wider joint uses it faster. The 151 tube, 70 g at £4.75, is for a sink drain or a letterbox, not a whole bath edge. Recheck the live fill where a title and a unit count disagree.
Can you trust a multipack photo for the number of tubes?
Not on its own. The Soudal three-pack specification says three, and two reviews say the photo shows four. The £12.95 title says six while the weight is 310 g. The Everbuild twelve-pack title says twelve and the unit count says one. Buy the count once it agrees with the weight.
