How to use a hot glue gun

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a 7 mm gun on the table, or one is about to arrive, and the first squeeze is where most people go wrong. Wait until it is hot, lay a small bead, press the joint at once, park it nozzle-up, and cool a burn under water without peeling. The [hot glue gun 7 mm comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/hot-glue-gun-7mm) lines the seven kits up. This page is the order of work. We used the Dremel UK manual, Electrical Safety First and British Red Cross burns advice, and we did not time a gun in a lab. Set the bench up before you plug in

Put the stand on a bench that will not scorch before you plug in. Electrical Safety First wants a UK 3-pin plug, no travel adaptor, and a non-flammable rest. A silicone mat or a ceramic tile catches the drip, even when the listing says drip-free. Route the lead so it does not pull a light gun off the rest. Charge the cordless Tilswall W106s from a 5 V / 2 A adaptor, maximum 10 W, and do not leave it charging overnight. Clean and dry the faces while the gun is cold. Dremel’s UK manual asks you to roughen a smooth face, warm cold metal, and stay between +5°C and +50°C. If the stick is the thick one, sort that on the 7 mm versus 11 mm glue gun page before you heat anything.

Heat, then squeeze gently

Load a 7 mm stick into the back, then switch on and wait. Bullets here claim about 90 seconds to 3–5 minutes, and they sometimes contradict the same listing. Dremel’s manual uses about five minutes. Use the time on your listing, or about five minutes if the page disagrees with itself. The first squeeze should be a glossy thread, not a stiff curl. Press the faces together immediately. Hot-melt grabs as it cools. Keep fingers off the nozzle and the fresh bead. Cotton gloves are not a shield against the 165°C Tilswall prints on the W101. Foam, a balloon or a thin ribbon belongs on the hot glue gun for crafts page.

Park it and switch it off

Between beads, park the gun nozzle-down in the stand, not on its side. DEKO owners report glue pouring out when the gun is left on and set down. ValueMax reviews say the nozzle still drips. A light ooze on the mat is normal. An anti-drip claim does not promise a clean bench. You can leave a corded gun plugged in for the next bead if you are in the room and it is on a safe stand. When you finish, switch off if it has a switch, unplug, and let it cool. Do not pull a stick out of the back while it is hot.

If glue hits skin, or the gun smells wrong

If molten glue hits your skin, do not peel it. Glue Guns Direct and the Dremel manual both say peeling takes skin with it. Cool the burn under cold running water for at least 20 minutes, then cover it with cling film. The British Red Cross timing is that 20 minutes. Do not use ice, creams or butter. Call 999 if the burn is serious, if you are unsure about a child, or if glue has gone into an eye. Unplug if the cable is damaged, if you smell burning, or if the gun will not stop extruding. A joint that has to hold weight is outside a craft bead.

Common questions

How long do I wait before the first squeeze?
Wait for the time your listing prints, or about five minutes if you are following a manual like Dremel’s and the bullets disagree. Claims in this set run from about 90 seconds to 3–5 minutes, and RUNSAI prints both. The glue should come out as a glossy thread. A stiff curl means it is not ready.
How do I load a 7 mm stick?
Push a 7 mm stick into the rear opening until it meets the mechanism, then squeeze gently once the glue is molten. Do not force an 11 mm stick, and do not shave one down to fit. If the trigger will not advance the stick, switch off and let the gun cool rather than leaning on it.
Why is glue still coming out on the stand?
Molten glue expands and a little keeps leaving the nozzle after you stop squeezing. That ooze is why the stand sits on a non-flammable mat. Parking the gun on its side, which DEKO reviews describe, turns the ooze into a pour. Nozzle up, in the rest, keeps it small.
What do I do if molten glue hits my skin?
Cool it under cold running water for at least 20 minutes, which is the British Red Cross timing for a burn. Do not peel the glue, do not use ice, and put cling film on only after the cooling. Phone 999 if the burn is serious, if glue is in an eye, or if you are unsure about a child.
Can I leave it plugged in between beads?
Yes, for the next bead in the same session, if it is on a stand, on a non-flammable surface, and you are there. Unplug it when you finish, and let it cool before it goes in a cupboard. Do not leave it heating unattended, and do not leave the cordless Tilswall on charge overnight.
What if the stick stops moving?
Stop squeezing. Forcing a cold or jammed stick pushes molten glue backwards. Unplug, let the gun cool, and only then see whether the stick is the wrong diameter. One Assark owner had to reload after about five minutes. If the cable is hot, the body smells of burning, or the nozzle will not stop, leave it unplugged.
