Acrylic sealant vs silicone

Updated: 23 October 2026

Two white cartridges look the same, and they fail in each other's jobs. Acrylic sealant is the one you paint on a dry, quiet crack. Silicone stays elastic where water sits, and emulsion will not stick to it. If you are about to seal a skirting, acrylic from this set is the cartridge. If you are about to seal a bath or a shower, put the acrylic down and buy a sanitary sealant. The [acrylic sealant comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/acrylic-sealant) ranks only acrylics, with no silicone ASIN in the table. Class codes are on the [buying guide](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/acrylic-sealant/sub/acrylic-sealant-buying-guide). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission. It does not make an acrylic into a bathroom seal.

They are not two colours of the same paste

Acrylic decorator's caulk is a water-based dispersion. It skins as water evaporates, shrinks as it dries, and behaves as a plastic at about 7.5 to 12.5 percent of the joint width. You can paint it and, on the Soudal pack, paper it. Silicone reacts with moisture, stays rubbery, and sheds water. Soudal's DIY answer is direct: paint does not adhere to silicone. A Soudal title here says acrylic silicone while the material field says acrylic. Everflex 175 says waterproof and names baths, and the sheet still excludes continuous immersion. Read the base on the label. A bathroom often needs both, in different places, not one cartridge around every edge.

Choose acrylic for a joint you will decorate

Use acrylic when the crack is dry, movement is small, and you will paint or paper the bead. Skirtings, architraves, plaster cracks and a still frame edge are the list. Caulk Once states F 12.5P, paint in about an hour, and full cure in 3 to 5 days, with shrinkage under 25 percent. Soudal is an interior joint at about 10 percent, with a 10 mm gap on the listing. You can paint those beads. You cannot immerse them. A waterproof Amazon line does not override the sheet. Shrink in a screw head is an acrylic drying problem. Silicone is not the fix if you still want to emulsion the skirting.

Choose sanitary silicone where water sits

Use a sanitary silicone where water sits: bath rim, shower tray, sink to worktop, a tiled corner that stays wet. EN 15651-3 is that sanitary class, in non-pressurised water. It is not EN 15651-1, the façade standard on decorator acrylics, and it is not a pool rating. Silicone stays flexible and lives wet. You cannot paint it. This category does not rank a silicone ASIN. Everflex 175 tempts people across the line because the listing says waterproof and names baths. Reviews say it washed off. The sheet excludes continuous immersion.

The awkward middle

Some joints are humid and still need paint: a steaming kitchen reveal, a splashed skirting that is not the bath joint, a uPVC perimeter that moves more than 12.5 percent. Acrylic is weak if the movement is high. Silicone is weak if you must emulsion over it. Soudal points that middle at a hybrid, which is not reviewed here. If the crack is dry and you will paint it, buy an acrylic. If water sits on it, buy a sanitary sealant under EN 15651-3. If silicone is already there and you need paint, cut it out first, and only run acrylic if the joint is dry. The sequence is on how to apply decorator's caulk.

Common questions

Can you paint silicone with emulsion?
No. Soudal's DIY FAQ says paint does not adhere to silicone, and emulsion beads and peels. Use acrylic for a paintable interior joint, or a hybrid if the manufacturer says that joint also moves and stays humid. Do not assume oil-based gloss will stick where emulsion failed. Remove the silicone rather than coating it.
Can acrylic go around a bath or shower?
Not where water sits. The sheets for Caulk Once, Soudal Decorators Caulk and Everflex 175 exclude continuous immersion. A bath rim and a shower tray need a sanitary sealant, typically silicone, marked for that use. Acrylic still belongs on the skirting in the same room, away from the wet edge. A second acrylic bead will not repair one that has washed off.
What does water resistant on an acrylic listing allow?
It lets you read the field Amazon printed. It does not allow a shower. Everflex 175 is listed as waterproof and names baths, and reviews include shower wash-off. The data sheet excludes continuous immersion. Caulk Once and the Soudal pack are water resistant on their listings and still sit under sheets that refuse constant water.
What is acrylic actually better at?
It is better where you will paint or paper a quiet, dry gap: skirtings, architraves, plaster cracks and a static interior frame edge. You can paint Caulk Once in about an hour after a skin, and paper the Soudal bead. Silicone will not take that finish. Acrylic is worse where the joint moves a lot or stays wet. Soudal states shrinkage under 25 percent.
Which standard is the bathroom one, in buyer language?
EN 15651-3 is the sanitary-joint standard for bathrooms, showers, toilets and domestic kitchens, in non-pressurised water. Decorator acrylic is usually described against the façade standard, EN 15651-1, with a class such as F 12.5P or F-INT. If the label is the sanitary class, you are not in this acrylic comparison. You need the class printed on the cartridge.
Why do some acrylic bullets mention baths?
Because the marketplace bullet and the data sheet are not the same sentence. Everflex 175's bullets name baths and the field says waterproof. The sheet says no continuous immersion, and reviewers report the bead leaving a shower. When the bullet and the sheet disagree, follow the sheet for a wet joint. A paintable product for a humid joint that also moves is the hybrid the manufacturer names.
