Top dressing, not a cure-all

About 1 cm on compost, with a drier surface between waters, hides mix that gnats like. It is prevention, not a sealed barrier. An outbreak still needs sticky traps and, if you want a biological step, nematodes. Do not pile stone against woody stems or a succulent caudex. A 15 cm pot needs a handful, not a 20 kg sack. Why a gravel sump is not drainage

A pebble layer in the lower third does not improve drainage. The RHS line is that crocks or stones create a perched water table and steal compost volume. Cover the hole with a shard or mesh, then fill with mix. A 2025 container study found some drainage layers reduced retention in loamless media. That is one paper, not a reason to build a sand sump. If the pot has no hole, gravel will not invent one.
