Artificial moss buying guide: format, grams and colour

Updated: October 2026

You opened amazon.co.uk for a green finish on a pot or a craft, and the first page mixed vacuum bags of fibre, a one-metre mat, sphagnum, and lawn mosskiller. This artificial moss buying guide puts the checks in order before you compare brands: what the bag is for, whether you need loose fibre or a sheet, how many grams the title claims, which greens you are buying, and how deep the review sample is. Shelf prices for the ten kept listings stay on the [Moss comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/moss). Named packs come after these checks. Nobody here ran a lab fade test or measured how many square metres a 100 g pack covers.

What this moss is for

These ten bags are decorative: nine teased fibre packs in polyester, nylon, or plastic, and one cuttable sheet. They hide compost, finish a craft, or dress a small model. They are not a growing medium or a lawn treatment. Sphagnum sits in another category. Live moss needs light and moisture. For lawn moss, the RHS points to scarifying and drainage, and says vinegar, bleach, soap, and baking soda are not mosskillers. Check the HSE pesticides databases before a chemical treatment. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 13, restricts picking and uprooting wild plants. Scotland's text also covers reckless conduct.

Loose fibre or a mat

Loose fibre is a vacuum brick you tease into a thin lid. It is the default for pots and pinches, because you can leave a gap at a live stem. The nine bags run from 50 g to 600 g, and the photo is larger than the brick. Vetin is the only mat: 100 cm by 100 cm at about £8.99, item weight 330 g. Cut it for a flat disc, and expect threads. Four reviews mention shedding. A no-shedding line is not a measured result. A preserved bowl is a different object. None of these ASINs is that type, even when a title borrows the word.

Grams, colour, and the setting line

Title grams are the pack claim. Item weight can differ: SHBAOCH 200 g against 174 g, Riare 600 g against 545 g, QWORK 200 g against 290 g. About 50–60 g suits one small pot, 100–200 g a few pots, and 600 g several large pots. That is not a square-metre figure. One Raroly reviewer said 100 g covered less than a square-metre bullet. QWORK, Acual, and QMLING put two greens in one order. A single green is enough for a flat lid. SUHAI's dark green read as bright for some reviewers, and Riare's colour field prints 1.3 lb, a size label. Indoor or outdoor is not a fade test. Acual is not for fish tanks. Read sample size last: WINOMO (751), Riare (462), Hexizexi (188), and SUHAI (101) outweigh QWORK's one 5.0. Non-toxic bullets are not tests.

What to leave for another page

This page does not name a winner. Named packs are on best artificial moss. Fluffing and cutting are on how to use artificial moss. Preserved moss is on artificial moss vs preserved moss. Leave the listing if the job is sphagnum, a lawn, a tank, or wild picking, or if one five-star rating is standing in for a long sample. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies when the opened pack does not match the description.

Common questions

Is this bag the same as sphagnum or a lawn mosskiller?
No. These ten listings are decorative synthetic fibre or one cuttable sheet. Sphagnum is a potting ingredient in another category. Lawn moss is a turf problem: scarify and improve conditions, and only use an HSE-authorised product if you treat chemically. A nylon bag will not kill moss in grass and will not replace sphagnum in a mix.
Do I want loose fibre or a 1 m mat?
Loose fibre is the usual choice for pots and small clumps because you can tease a thin lid. The Vetin 100 × 100 cm mat is for a shape you will cut, and the four-review sample talks about shedding. Buy the sheet only if you need a flat disc and will tidy threads.
How many grams for one small pot versus several pots?
About 50–60 g covers one small pot, 100–200 g a few pots, and 600 g several large pots. That is not a measured square-metre figure. Weigh the bag if the title and the item-weight row disagree.
Why does the title weight differ from the item-weight row?
Packaging and how Amazon records the parcel explain most gaps. SHBAOCH shows 200 g against 174 g; Riare shows 600 g against 545 g. Treat the title as the seller's pack claim. If the opened bag is clearly another size or colour mix, that is a goods-as-described question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Should I buy one green or two greens?
Two greens in one order, as on QWORK, Acual, and QMLING, break up a flat dyed look. A single green is enough for a simple lid. SUHAI's dark green read as bright for some reviewers.
Does indoor or outdoor on the listing mean the colour will not fade?
No. The setting line is not a UK weathering test, and an outdoor tag does not prove the dye will hold on a balcony. Water-permeable bullets are the same kind of claim. None of these bags is sold here as fish-safe.
