Brown needles and conifer fertiliser

Updated: October 2026

The hedge has gone brown in patches, or the inner needles have rusted, and you are searching conifer going brown what to do before you open a bottle. Brown foliage is a diagnosis job first. Feed is an optional late-winter support after water and pests, not a cure. A pack does not turn old wood green and it does not treat cypress aphid, honey fungus, or Phytophthora. The [conifer fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/conifer-fertiliser) holds the eight amazon.co.uk specialist packs we kept. The Products Compared editorial team read those listings on 21 October 2026. We did not inspect your hedge.

What brown needles usually mean

Inner browning on a dense hedge is often shade and age. Leylandii and thuja shed older needles inside the canopy where light never reaches. That is not a nutrient emergency. Scattered patches on the outside, especially on cypress and leylandii, are a different picture: drought, wind, frost, a clumsy trim, or cypress aphid. A whole tree that is brown from the base, or that rocks at the root plate, is a third picture and the one that needs a professional. The Royal Horticultural Society page on conifers with brown patches is the diagnosis-first source here. Cypress aphid accounts for about half of the cases they investigated. Lack of a specialist bag is not on that list as the usual cause. If the plant is still growing and you only wanted a calendar, use how to use conifer fertiliser. This page stays on the brown tree.

Check water, roots, and last year's cut

Water first. A dry summer browns the windward side and the tips. Waterlogging browns from the roots up. The RHS declining-trees page says poor uptake from drought, compaction, waterlogging, or root disease is common; established ornamentals seldom fail from a lack of soil nutrients. Press a fingernail into a twig. Green under the bark means the shoot is still alive. Brown and brittle means that piece will not green again. Most conifers will not reshoot from old wood. Yew is the exception. Thuja is less reliable. If last year's cut went back to brown stems, feed will not rebuild the face.

Pests and diseases versus hunger

Look for cypress aphid before you open fertiliser. A bottle of plant food is not an insecticide. Scale insects and several needle blights (Pestalotiopsis, Seiridium) also brown foliage after stress. Listing lines that say a feed avoids diseases or is harmless to animals are not tests. Honey fungus and Phytophthora are root and collar problems. A whole tree that dies, a white mycelium under bark, or a sour, waterlogged root ball is not a feed job. Call a professional when the whole tree is dead, when a large specimen sits by buildings, or when a neighbour dispute about height is already in play. Feed does not settle a high-hedge complaint under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 Part 8. Hunger is the rare leftover. Even colour, short growth, and a soil that has been mined for years without mulch can justify a late-winter granule. Brown needles alone do not.

When a feed still makes sense

After you have watered, checked the last cut, and ruled out an obvious pest, a late-winter general-purpose granule plus an 8 cm mulch is the RHS support line on the brown-patch page. Keep the mulch off the bark. Do not feed after September. Do not pour a weekly liquid onto a tree that cannot take it up. If you still want a specialist pack for that optional pass, the conifer fertiliser buying guide is the form-and-label page. Named picks from this capture sit on best conifer fertiliser. Neither page will sell you a bottle as a cure.

When to skip the bag

Skip feed entirely when the wood is dead, when the pot is waterlogged, when aphids are still untreated, or when you are in a hot drought. Overfeed makes soft growth that winter then burns. Replacement is the honest end point for a leylandii that was cut to brown stumps.

Common questions

Will fertiliser turn a brown conifer green?
Not if the wood is dead, and not if the cause is drought, aphid, or a cut into old wood. Live shoots can hold colour after water and an optional late-winter feed. Old brown stems stay brown. Empathy reviews that mention greening are anecdotes, not a result we will promise.
Why is the inside of the hedge brown?
Dense conifers shed older inner needles where light never reaches. That is common on leylandii and thuja. Thin the face only into green. If the inside is dry and the outside is still even, you do not have a feed emergency.
Is it cypress aphid?
It might be, especially on cypress and leylandii with patches rather than an even fade. The RHS found aphids in about half of investigated brown-patch cases. Look on inner foliage in spring. Treat the pest. Do not use fertiliser as the treatment.
I cut it back hard — can feed rebuild it?
Usually no. Most conifers will not reshoot from old wood. Yew can. Thuja sometimes fails. Feed does not create buds on brown stems. Plant in front or live with the gap.
When is feed still useful on a stressed hedge?
Late winter, after water and a pest check, on a tree that still has live green shoots. Use a readable packet and stop after September. Never use feed as a disease spray.
When should I call someone in?
When the whole tree is dead, when you suspect honey fungus or Phytophthora, when a large specimen sits by buildings or drains, or when a high-hedge complaint is already open. A bottle will not close those jobs.
Is a whole brown tree honey fungus?
It can be, and it can also be Phytophthora, waterlogging, or a dead root plate. We will not diagnose from a description. Stop feeding, keep the area from flooding if you can, and get the tree looked at before you replace it in the same hole.
