Cherry laurel fertiliser buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have typed cherry laurel fertiliser into amazon.co.uk and the results mix evergreen pouches, rose food, and a bottle whose title says Thuja. The useful question is whether the hedge needs a feed, and whether the label is one a cherry laurel or a Portuguese laurel can use. This cherry laurel fertiliser buying guide is that filter. Prices, star lines and the four listings sit on the [Cherry laurel fertiliser](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/cherry-laurel-fertiliser) comparison, checked on 19 October 2026. Does the hedge need a bag at all

Buy when growth is pale and weak, the hedge is young, it lives in a pot, or you have cut it hard and the new shoots look thin. Portuguese laurel, Prunus lusitanica, follows the same rule as Prunus laurocerasus. UK hedging nurseries still treat both as plants that do not need a special acid feed just because they are evergreen. A row in water, or an old hedge that has barely moved for two seasons, might justify one spring feed. A dense hedge is not a shopping problem.

What the label has to say

Keep a label that says evergreen, hedge, tree and shrub, or cherry laurel in the bullets. Drop ericaceous food, citrus feed, acer feed, clematis feed, and box-only tablets. Hedging Plants Direct's 7-7-7 is a worked example of a balanced hedge feed. It is not printed on these four listings, so do not copy it onto a blank pouch. Goulding's rose, tree and shrub granules are the nearest general shrub label here, and cherry laurel is not named. Substral's bullets name thujas, cypress, box, cherry laurel and rhododendron, while the target-species field says Thuja. The bullets even spell the plant cherry laurberry. Which job each listing fits is on best cherry laurel fertiliser.

Form, pack and the missing analysis

Granules suit metres of hedge. A liquid suits a shorter run you will dilute. On 19 October 2026 the Empathy pouch was about £7.99 for 1 kg. The form is granules, but the product data say one capful in 4.5 litres of water. Do not use that if the pouch says sprinkle. The 1 litre was about £9.46, mixing field 1:4.5. According to the manufacturer, that bottle is 20 ml in 4.5 litres for new plants and 40 ml for established plants. The pack in your hand wins if it differs. Goulding's unit count is 720 g against a listed weight of 750 g, and 1:0:0 is not an NPK. Substral's 500 ml was about £22.80, at 1:80 to water and 1:67 to spray.

What this comparison does not stock

Search still shows fertilisers that say cherry laurel on the title. A Cuxin DCM special fertiliser is described as NPK 7-5-8. A GREEN24 cherry laurel liquid appeared at 250 ml for £12.95. Neither is a row here. The four products compared are an evergreen granule, an evergreen liquid, a rose-tree-and-shrub granule, and a thuja-titled liquid whose bullets also name cherry laurel. If the hedge is healthy, the right purchase can be nothing.

Common questions

Does a healthy cherry laurel hedge need a fertiliser at all?
Often no. The Royal Horticultural Society says most shrubs cope without extra feeding, with an optional general-purpose feed in late winter and none after September. Buy for weak pale growth, a young hedge, a pot or a hard renovation. A hedge that is already growing well is better mulched, on damp soil, with the mulch kept off the stems, than fed every month.
Should I buy an ericaceous feed for cherry laurel?
Not as a default. UK hedging guidance says cherry and Portuguese laurel do not normally need an ericaceous or very high-nitrogen product. Some US pages recommend ericaceous feed. That is a different climate and a different shopping habit. Leave ericaceous, citrus, acer and clematis bottles unless the label in front of you actually names your hedge.
Is a rose, tree and shrub granule close enough?
It can be, with a limit. Goulding's listing is for roses, trees and shrubs, and it does not name cherry laurel. If you accept a general shrub granule and a slow-release claim of up to six months, it is the broadest solid feed in this set. It is a weaker fit than an evergreen hedge label, and one UK review used it on ericaceous plants, which does not make it an ericaceous product.
Why does one bottle say Thuja in one field and cherry laurel in the bullets?
Because both lines are on the Substral Thuja-Vital listing. The bullets name thujas, cypress, box, cherry laurel and rhododendron. The target-species field says Thuja. Show both. Do not decide the bottle is laurel-only, or thuja-only, by deleting the line you like less.
Where is the NPK on these amazon.co.uk listings?
It is not printed on the product data for any of the four. Empathy, Goulding and Substral all come back without an analysis. Goulding's mixing field reads 1:0:0, which we do not treat as an NPK. A nursery's 7-7-7, or another brand's 7-5-8, stays on that other product.
Are bay, box or citrus feeds the same purchase?
No. Bay is a different plant. Box tablets, citrus feed and clematis feed are neighbouring search results, not substitutes for Prunus laurocerasus or Portuguese laurel. A box plant can sit beside laurel in a Substral bullet list and still leave you with a thuja tonic you did not mean to buy.
Why are named cherry-laurel bags on amazon.co.uk missing from this comparison?
Because this comparison only scores the amazon.co.uk listings compared on 19 October 2026. A laurel-named product can be on sale and still be absent here. A Cuxin special fertiliser and a GREEN24 cherry laurel liquid are examples of that gap. They are not hidden winners. They were not in this comparison, so they have no row.
