Insulating tape vs self amalgamating tape, explained

Updated: October 2026

You have seen a black rubber roll with no sticky side, and the amazon.co.uk search for insulating tape has also shown ordinary PVC that grabs your fingers. Insulating tape vs self amalgamating tape is that split. Every roll kept in this comparison has an adhesive. Self-amalgamating tape fuses to itself when you stretch it, and none of these nine ASINs is that product. This page is from Peter F. on 21 October 2026, using the stored listings, not a lab test. Sticky PVC

PVC insulating tape is a plastic film with a sticky face. In this set the adhesive line is rubber on both Gocableties listings and on QILIMA. Faithfull, Status, British General, JFA and CHUANGSEED carry a PVC adhesive field. All nine are adhesive tapes. None of the pages says self-amalgamating, linerless, or PIB. If the roll sticks to the backing when you peel it, you are holding PVC, not PIB. The adhesive is still doing the holding when you let go. Width, temperature and the exact BS EN words are set out in the insulating tape buying guide. A strong-adhesion bullet does not turn a roll into rubber tape.

Self-amalgamating tape

Self-amalgamating tape is a different material. RS describes it as a tape with no adhesive that fuses when you stretch it, set against PVC as a plastic tape for insulation. The usual rubber is polyisobutylene, often called PIB. You stretch it, the layers bond to each other, and there is no sticky side. Advance AT87 is one real example, and it is not in this nine. Advance lists it as black non-adhesive PIB, 0.5 mm thick, −30 °C to +100 °C, with a breakdown of 17 kV/mm. Those figures belong to AT87. They do not transfer to these PVC rolls. Cloth loom tape and aluminium foil tape were removed for the same reason. B0FL1PWV5B and B0GF75RJ99 are felt harness tapes, and B0DP31TG1L is aluminium foil.

Using both

On professional joints, 3M’s UK insulation page describes self-amalgamating and mastic tapes as the moisture barrier, with PVC as the outer layer for abrasion, ultraviolet light and colour. The order is rubber first, PVC over the top. It is not an instruction to rebuild a nicked appliance flex. None of the nine rolls can play the rubber part of that pair. A waterproof field does not change the material. British General and TAPEBEAR say waterproof, and neither states an IP rating. You cannot stretch these PVC rolls until they behave like PIB. The half-lap for the sticky film, on sound insulation only, is on how to wrap electrical tape.

What this does not fix

A fused rubber wrap and a sticky PVC wrap are both still tape. Electrical Safety First says a cable, checked with the plug out, should have no joints and no insulating-tape repairs. The Health and Safety Executive says equipment should come out of use when the cable has been repaired with insulating tape or the internal wires are visible. Swapping the PVC roll for AT87 does not cross that line. A self-amalgamating layer is still not a new flex. Visible copper, a nick, or a lead that is already a ball of old tape means replace the cable or call a registered electrician. The 17 kV/mm figure on AT87 is not a reason to splice a 230 V appliance lead.

Common questions

Do any of these nine rolls fuse to themselves with no adhesive?
No. Each kept listing names an adhesive, either a rubber line or a PVC adhesive field. TAPEBEAR mentions rubber on the material line and still lists a PVC adhesive. None of the pages says self-amalgamating or linerless. If the tape sticks to its own backing as you peel it, it is the PVC product in this comparison, not PIB tape.
What is the sticky side doing on PVC tape?
It holds the lap on a sound sheath and holds a colour band you use to identify a core. The adhesive is the whole holding method. There is no second mechanism where the film welds to itself the way PIB does.
When do electricians use self-amalgamating tape under PVC?
3M’s UK page describes self-amalgamating or mastic tape as the moisture barrier and PVC as the outer layer for abrasion, ultraviolet light and colour. The rubber goes on first and the PVC covers it. It is not a method for repairing a cut appliance flex at home.
Is waterproof on a PVC listing the same as a PIB seal?
A PIB tape seals by fusing under stretch, with no adhesive. A waterproof word on British General or TAPEBEAR is a listing field, and neither page states an IP rating. JFA’s field says not water resistant. Those sentences do not match AT87’s non-adhesive rubber, and they do not make a PVC lap a moisture seal.
Can I stretch PVC tape until it behaves like rubber tape?
Stretching PVC helps it conform and can narrow the film. PIB tape has no sticky side and bonds to itself. You will not reach that behaviour by pulling a Faithfull or QILIMA roll harder.
Which removed products are also not this category?
Felt loom tape and aluminium foil tape appeared in the same amazon.co.uk node and were taken out. The removed ASINs are B0FL1PWV5B and B0GF75RJ99 for felt harness tape, and B0DP31TG1L for aluminium foil. They are not sticky PVC insulating tape, and they are not self-amalgamating PIB either.
Does a self-amalgamating wrap repair a nicked flex?
A fused rubber layer is still a tape repair on a damaged cable. Electrical Safety First and the HSE both treat an insulating-tape repair, or visible internal wires, as a reason to stop using the lead and have it replaced. AT87’s 17 kV/mm figure does not change that. Replace the flex, or call a registered electrician, whether the roll in your hand is PVC or PIB.
