Digital timer plug buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a UK socket and a lamp, a small fan, or a phone charger, and you want it to switch itself. A digital timer plug buying guide starts with the object, not the brand, because a plug-in adaptor, a fused spur and a panel module do not swap. The ten amazon.co.uk listings in the [digital timer switch comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/digital-timer-switch) include all three, with captured shelf prices from about £5.95 to £33 on 20 October 2026. Those prices were not re-checked live, and this is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you are still unsure the appliance is portable, read [plug in timer or fused spur](/hub/electrical-equipment/digital-timer-switch/sub/digital-timer-switch-plug-in-or-fused-spur) before you add anything to the basket.

Plug-in, fused spur, or panel module

A plug-in timer is the right first object when the appliance already has a BS 1363 plug and you can spare the socket. You push the timer into the wall and the appliance into the front. You do not open a back box. That convenience ends when the load is fixed. An immersion or a hard-wired towel rail is not a portable appliance, even when the title prints 13 A. The cylinder is on the immersion heater timer switch page. A fused spur replaces the switched connection unit on the wall. The Timeguard FST24 and the Candeo C-TSFS are that form, both around £33, with a 13 A fuse and a boost of one or two hours. The Heschen CN101A at about £12.59 is a panel module, not a UK plug, and the cradle was not in the box.

Resistive load, inductive load, and figures to ignore

UK sockets are 13 A at about 230 V. Resistive loads, such as a heater element or a filament lamp, draw a fairly steady current. Inductive loads, such as a motor or some fans, draw more as they start. None of the ten captured bullets name BS EN IEC 60730-2-7. Two plugs state a figure you can use. The NOVKIT twin says 230 V, 13 A and 2,900 W. The ORIDGET title says 13 A / 240 V. The Status ION7DDT10, the MeFay and both Awootsv plugs state no wattage. The line to throw away is the Status S7DDT3 twin at about £12: the file prints 5,250 W, 23 A and 110 V to 630 V. A UK 13 A socket is none of those. A plug fuse is 3 A or 13 A, and you replace it like for like.

Weekly, daily, countdown, boost, and random

Count the on and off events before you compare programme totals. The same hours every day is one pair. A different weekend is a second pair, and the timer has to let you attach days. The ORIDGET title is a daily programme, and one long review says there is no weekly timer. If Saturday must differ from Tuesday, do not buy it for that job. The NOVKIT twin offers 10 weekly programmes. Countdown is for a blanket or a charger you want off after a set period. Boost, on the two spurs, is one or two hours and then off. On the NOVKIT, random still needs a window you have already set. The clock and the first pair are on how to programme a digital timer plug.

What to check on the listing

Read the load, the schedule, and any backup claim before the star rating. The Awootsv files claim a NiMH cell, the NOVKIT and ORIDGET claim a built-in battery, and the spurs claim up to four weeks. The Status ION7DDT10 and the MeFay do not state a backup. A splash cap on the Heschen is not an IP rating, and an indoor title does not become outdoor because one review tried garden lights. You want a UK 13 A plug, not a two-pin body. CE or RoHS on a bullet does not repair a missing amp figure. The ORIDGET claims a child lock, and a reviewer later could not undo it without a PDF. The NOVKIT body is large enough to cover the next outlet.

Common questions

Do I need a plug-in timer or a wall spur?
You need a plug-in timer when the appliance already has a UK three-pin plug, you can leave it in one socket, and the load sits inside a figure the listing actually states. You need a fused spur when the appliance is fixed, such as an immersion or a hard-wired towel rail.
Is 13 A the same as 3 kW for hours?
13 A at about 230 V is roughly 3 kW as a product of current and voltage. It is not permission to run a 3 kW element for a long period through a plug-in timer. A long immersion is a different duty from an evening lamp.
What is an inductive load on a timer?
An inductive load is typically a motor, a pump, or some fans, where the current rises as the machine starts. A resistive load is a heater element or a filament lamp, with a steadier draw. A listing that only prints 13 A may be talking about the resistive case.
How many on/off pairs do I need for weekdays and weekends?
One pair is one on time and one matching off time. Two pairs cover a morning and an evening, or a weekday pattern and a weekend pattern, if the timer lets you attach days to each pair. Ten programmes is five pairs when every slot is a single on or off.
Does random mode need a programme first?
On the NOVKIT it does. You set the window, and random varies the switching inside those times. It does not invent a schedule of its own. If a review mentions random and the bullets do not, treat that as a report.
Why does one Status listing show thousands of watts?
The Status S7DDT3 twin file prints 5,250 W, 23 A and a voltage range of 110 V to 630 V. Those figures conflict with a UK 13 A socket and with each other, and a width of 25 decimetres conflicts with the centimetre dimensions. Do not buy that pack as a 5 kW controller.
