Tap and die set for car repairs

Updated: October 2026

The bracket bolt has gone in crooked, and another turn will wipe the thread. A tap and die set for car repairs comes down to a pitch check and a stop list, on a car, a motorbike or a steel gate. A metric hand set can clean an ordinary coarse thread. Wheel studs, brakes, steering, suspension and gas stay with someone equipped for that joint. The twelve listings are in the [taps and dies comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/taps-and-dies). Prices below are amazon.co.uk figures from 15 October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not cut a test thread. Links to amazon.co.uk use the tag pcuk26-21, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Cleaning a thread is not the same as cutting one

A die from a general set cuts, so a rusty bolt loses steel even when you only meant to clear scale. Keep that off a fastener that locates a wheel. Tool Connection’s Laser re-threader lists M12 × 1.25, M12 × 1.5, M12 × 1.75 and M14 × 1.5, at £81.11 including VAT. MyToolShed’s Sealey chaser says it restores the thread without removing material the way a tap does. No price was given. On a wheel bolt, use the chaser or a new stud.

Wheel bolts use more than one M12 pitch

Coarse M12 is M12 × 1.75. Wheels also use M12 × 1.25, M12 × 1.5 and M14 × 1.5. A coarse die crosses a finer bolt on the first turn. The Gunpla 32-piece and both GreeSuit 32-piece listings stop at M12 × 1.75. The Gunpla 40-piece at £25.60 lists M12 × 1.5 with M12 × 1.75. The Faankiton 110-piece at £83.99 also lists M12 × 1.5, and its steel lines conflict. A classic car may be UNF or Whitworth. Check the metric or imperial page before an M die. A matching fine die still leaves the wheel stud to a chaser.

Jobs these listings' reviewers actually did

The notes on these listings are not a road test. The GreeSuit 32-SL at £21.86 cut an M10 motorcycle socket at coarse M10 × 1.5. A cover bolt can be a home job when the pitch is readable and the joint is not under oil pressure. A sump plug can look similar and is still a workshop hole. QWORK reviewers tapped M6 gate holes with the £9.99 set. The CYH set at £6.46 has no die, so it cannot chase a bolt. One Gunpla 40-piece review mentions a cleaned wheel stud. That stays one account. A flattened tap on a DPF flange is where the stop list starts.

Brakes, steering and anything that must stay pressure-tight

Brake calipers, bleed nipples, steering joints, suspension fasteners and gas fittings are workshop jobs. BCS Automotive states helicoil work on calipers from £60 to £90 and bleed-nipple removal from £35, and tells you to stop once a nipple has snapped. That range is not a quote for your car. A mixed-set tap is the wrong tool in a caliper. This page gives no fitting method. Put the wrench down before the first turn.

When the thread is already gone

A second pass will not grow missing crests back. Biker’s Toolbox sells insert kits in M6, M8, M10 and M12. The tap in that kit is oversized for the insert, so a metric hand-set tap cannot prepare that hole. Book a sump plug or a caliper with a workshop that already fits inserts. Where you are still right to cut, the how to use a tap and die page carries the sequence.

Common questions

Can I clean a rusty bolt thread with a die from a cheap set?
You can, when the bolt is a coarse size the set contains, the crests are only bruised, and it is not a wheel stud, brake, steering joint, suspension bolt or gas fitting. The die still cuts. QWORK reviewers used the £9.99 set on an M6 gate. Match the pitch before you turn the stock. If the die cocks over, stop and fit a new bolt.
What pitch is a wheel bolt, M12 × 1.75 or finer?
Wheel bolts use more than one pitch. Coarse metric is M12 × 1.75. Tool Connection’s Laser kit also lists M12 × 1.25, M12 × 1.5 and M14 × 1.5. Measure the bolt you removed, or try a nut of known pitch, before you buy a die. A coarse-only die crosses a finer wheel bolt on the first turn.
Should I cut a new thread on a wheel stud?
Use a chaser made for wheel bolts, or fit a new stud. A cutting die from a general set takes metal off a safety fastener. The Sealey four-piece covers the same pitches as the Laser kit, and that seller describes a chaser as restoring the thread without taking metal the way a tap does. If the nut will not spin on by hand after a careful chase, replace the stud.
Which of these listings contains M12 × 1.5?
The Gunpla 40-piece at £25.60 lists M12 × 1.5 with M12 × 1.75, and M10 × 1.25 with M10 × 1.5. The Faankiton 110-piece at £83.99 lists M12 × 1.5 and M14 sizes, and its steel lines conflict. The Gunpla 32-piece and both GreeSuit 32-piece listings list only M12 × 1.75 and M10 × 1.5. A coarse die will not start cleanly on a fine bolt.
Will a metric set tap a steel gate post?
It will, if the post is thick enough and the pitch is a coarse metric size your set contains. QWORK reviewers tapped M6 gate holes with the 12-piece set at £9.99. The CYH set at £6.46 is taps only, so it will not chase a bolt. On thin box section the tap can break out through the wall. If the old thread has gone, a new hole or a through-bolt is the simpler repair.
