SDS plus drill bit for concrete

Updated: 2026-10-23

A bit that sails through a soft red brick can glaze, wander or snap once the wall is a dense block, a concrete lintel or a slab with steel in it. An SDS plus drill bit for concrete is still the same shank as the plug bit in your case. What changes is the material, the chance of rebar, and how much you trust a sentence on a listing. This page follows that job. Prices are the amazon.co.uk figures on the [SDS plus drill bit comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/sds-plus-drill-bit). Brick, block and concrete are not one material

Common brick is the easy end. A YSDINTAI review describes a breeze-block wall that needed a hard push. Dense block, engineering brick and a lintel blunt a tip that was fine on a garden wall. On rebar the hammer note changes, and a two-cutter can jam. HSE CN3 says concrete dust may contain respirable crystalline silica, so capture it or wear protection at APF 20. A full shift of anchors is a professional dust-control job.

What these listings say they will drill

The Bosch PRO SDS plus-5X, part 2608833910, at £10.92, names concrete and reinforced concrete. Makita's E-15730 at £9.59 has concrete on the surface field. The WORKPRO eight-piece at £16.99 names brick and concrete and says it is not for tile. YSDINTAI's bullet says reinforced concrete does not stop the bit. That is the seller's sentence, not Bosch's test. The WORKPRO 17-piece at £31.99 lists tile, which the eight-piece excludes. Meccion at £21.99 names a cross tip and does not list the six diameters. A review says the head wore off on the first hole. None of the ten listings prints a PGM mark.

Rebar and a cross tip

Bosch's GB page for the PRO SDS plus-5X says the four-cutter head does not jam on rebar, and that it lasts up to 1.5 times a Bosch SDS plus-1 bit. Both lines are Bosch's, not a result for YSDINTAI or Meccion. A four-cutter can still chip. Ease off when the note changes, and keep the tool in line. Reviews here include a snapped Makita 5 mm, hsawbit 6 mm bits in concrete, and WORKPRO tips that left the steel. Clear the dust as on the how to use an SDS plus drill bit page. If the bar still carries load, stop.

A hole that still has to hold

Dust in a plug hole is what makes the plug spin. A resin anchor takes its diameter, depth and cleaning from the maker's sheet. PGM says ISO 5468 does not cover SDS hammer bits, and none of these listings prints a PGM mark. A Meccion review describes a bit about 2 mm out of line, which opens the hole oval. Call a specialist for a structural anchor or a certified bit. A garden-wall plug in dense block can stay with a straight bit and a cleared hole.

Common questions

Can an SDS plus bit drill reinforced concrete?
Yes, and several listings name reinforced concrete. The only kept set that ties a four-cutter to rebar in the maker's words is the Bosch PRO SDS plus-5X at £10.92. That 1.5-times line is Bosch's claim. If the bar is structural, stop.
What happens when the bit hits rebar?
The note changes and the bit can snatch. Bosch's four-cutter note is about its own bits. Ease the feed, stay in line, and do not lever a 5 mm or 6 mm bit. Drilling on through loaded steel is a structural decision.
Is a four-cutter tip required for a garden wall?
No. Ordinary brick is a two-cutter job if the diameter matches the plug. The four-cutter claim on these listings is Bosch's plus-5X claim, not YSDINTAI's sentence on a 14 mm bit.
Why did the tip fall off after a few holes?
A poor carbide bond lets go in hard aggregate or heat. WORKPRO reviews describe a 6 mm tip gone after a handful of holes. Makita and Meccion reviews report tips that came off. Fit a straight spare of the same diameter.
Is concrete the same job as engineering brick?
No. Engineering brick is dense fired clay. Concrete may hide aggregate or steel, which is the plus-5X claim. A listing that names both has not tested them. Stop if the bit snatches.
Do I need a PGM bit for a resin anchor?
You need the bit the anchor sheet names. PGM says ISO 5468 does not cover SDS hammer bits, and none of these listings prints a PGM mark. Bosch EXPERT plus-8X and Hilti TE-CD bits are different products.
Will a diamond core do this job better?
A diamond core grinds a large hole, often in rotation only. A 65 mm core with an SDS plus adaptor is not in this comparison and does not replace a 6 mm plug bit. A large penetration needs a core rig.
