How to use a Forstner bit without burning the wood

Updated: 23 October 2026

The bit is in the chuck, the board is still loose on the bench, and the last hole came out brown at the rim. How to use a Forstner bit well is mostly about keeping the work still, starting square, and easing off when you see smoke instead of chips. Which listing to buy is on the [Forstner bit comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/forstner-bit). The Products Compared editorial team wrote this on 20 October 2026 from maker lines in those listings, HSE guidance and workshop sources. Nothing was bored in a lab. Before the chuck turns

Put eye protection on before the first revolution. The PPE at Work Regulations 1992 require suitable eye protection where chips fly at work, and hsawbit's reminder says the same. At work, HSE's wood-dust limits are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and 5 mg/m³ for softwood over eight hours, and COSHH applies. Clamp the board. A Forstner bit can grab as the rim meets the surface, and an unclamped door becomes a spinning plate. hsawbit allows a hand-held drill or a bench press and tells you not to use an impact driver. Follow the sheet for the bit in your hand. Whether a cordless drill is the right machine is on the drill press or hand drill page.

Start square and clear the chips

Set the centre point on the mark and bring the rim down square. A short or blunt centre, which Hinrichs reviewers mention, makes that start less reliable, and a hand drill then wanders. On a cordless drill you are the fence. Feed steadily and back out. If you bury the bit, the chips pack and the bottom scorches. hsawbit reviewers describe a flat bottom that burns in hardwood. Depth is a stop, not a guess. Tape on the bit is a marker, and it is easy to push past. Concealed-hinge depths on UK notes often sit around 10 mm to 13.5 mm. The measurements belong on the 35 mm hinge page.

Smoke, dust, and a dull rim

Smoke or fine dust, instead of chips, means the rim is rubbing. A US workshop answer from Popular Woodworking puts it as too much speed or too much pressure. Treat that as a rule of thumb. Bosch's GB Forstner pages used here do not publish a speed table, and there is no UK standard rpm to print. Ease the feed, back out, and clear the hole. Heat is what UK woodworkers describe with ordinary bits in a hand drill. Toothed carbide rims can grab and walk if the angle is slightly off. flintronic's UK comments include a 35 mm bit that was hard to control in 18 mm plywood by hand. If the rim burns every hole in softwood, stop using it on a finished face. A file will not rebuild a snapped carbide tooth.

What the listings forbid

Do not put an hsawbit Forstner bit in an impact driver. The listing says hand-held drills and bench presses. Bosch's EXPERT page is labelled for impact drill/drivers as well, so the ban belongs to the sheet that prints it. DTGN states a second ban: not for concrete, steel, ceramic or glass. A surface dropdown that says metal does not create a metal bit. Stop and get a professional when the job is a run of doors and you have no depth stop, when the bore is near hidden pipes or cables, or when the cutter is sold only for a machine you do not have. At work, repetitive boring also sits under COSHH and PUWER.

Common questions

How do I stop the wood burning?
Ease the feed and clear the chips as soon as you see smoke or fine dust instead of shavings. A US workshop rule of thumb ties that heat to too much speed or too much pressure. There is no UK rpm chart on the Bosch GB pages used here, so do not hunt for a magic number. A clamp and a square start stop the extra rubbing that happens when the rim is tilted.
Should I push harder when the bit slows?
No. A slower cut with chips still coming is healthier than a stalled rim you lean on. Pushing packs the flutes and scorches the flat bottom, which is the complaint in hardwood reviews of the hsawbit bits. Back out, clear the hole, and continue. If softwood already burns, the edge is likely dull.
How do I limit depth without a pillar drill?
Mark the bit with tape at the depth you measured on a scrap, and stop when the tape meets the surface. Tape moves, so it is a cue, not a stop. Bore the scrap first and test the fitting. On a thin door, that test matters more than an extra millimetre. Hinge numbers live on the hinge page.
Can I use an impact driver?
Not with the hsawbit bits in this comparison. Those listings allow a hand drill or a bench press and forbid an impact driver. Bosch's EXPERT Forstner page is labelled for impact drill/drivers too, which shows the rule belongs to the product sheet. If your sheet forbids it, an impact driver is not a workaround.
When should I stop and get a professional?
When you are facing a full set of doors without a depth stop, when the hole runs near services you cannot see, or when the cutter is meant for a hinge machine you do not own. One practice hole in a scrap is still yours. A repetitive job at work, with wood dust and machinery duties, belongs with someone set up for it.
