Wind chimes buying guide

Updated: October 2026

Garden chimes on amazon.co.uk all say tuned, outdoor and soothing, and the prices in this set run from a few pounds to £35. This wind chimes buying guide is the order of checks before you add one to the basket: overall length, weight, what the tubes are made of, and whether the review file is large enough to trust. The twelve listings are on the [wind chimes comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/wind-chimes). Peter F. read those pages and the UK review notes on 16 October 2026. We did not hang them in a lab. What to read on the listing first

Start with overall length and weight, then the material, because those three decide whether you are looking at a porch instrument or a light ornament. The Wind Chime Shop measures overall length from the hanging ring to the wind catcher, not along the longest tube. A 36 inch title can therefore be the whole hanging object. On the ASTARIN listing the title says 36 inch, the height cell is 91.4 cm and the weight is 948 g. The Febbya listing states 58 cm and 90 g with 12 tubes. Aluminium, bamboo, copper-alloy bells and resin with solar lights are different objects, even when the title uses the same words.

Tuned, pentatonic, or just a longer tube

A longer tube can sound deeper. That is not the same as a named scale. The Wind Chime Shop describes a pentatonic scale as five notes in the octave, so that random strikes still sit together. The ASTARIN bullet uses the word and does not print the note names. The Koshi Terra, at £35, does print a scale. The sound profile shows G C E F G C E G, the long side is 16.5 cm, and the indoor/outdoor field says Indoor. A sub-£10 precision-tuned bullet, with 5.0 from three ratings, is not that. The QhgPnt brand cell is QhgPnt, from China. It is not ASIN B00OG2A1DO.

Outdoor claim, cord and the neighbour

An outdoor field means the seller is offering it for outside. It does not mean the cord or the bamboo will ignore a British winter. The Wind Chime Shop's care notes say aluminium alloy does not rust, though it can pit, and that bamboo cracks from humidity are normal and not automatically the end of the sound. Bring bamboo in for a harsh winter. A UK review of the ASTARIN says the black cord snapped in high wind. Crawley Borough Council lists wind chimes among everyday sounds it will not investigate. That is one council, not a national exemption. If the garden is small and close, the material choice is the bamboo or aluminium page. How you hang the hook is on how to hang wind chimes.

When the numbers disagree

Do not average a title and a dimensions cell into a third length. The FONMY title says 33 inch and the cell is 73.7 x 17.8 x 2.5 cm. The VEKEK bullet says about 48 cm and the cell is 40 x 20 x 10 millimetres. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, requires satisfactory quality in the light of the price and the description. A chime that arrives so tangled it cannot be hung, or a solar light that never works, is a complaint to the retailer, not a story about the wind. Who each row is for, once you have done these checks, is on the best wind chimes page.

Common questions

Does 36 inches mean the tube or the whole chime?
On the ASTARIN listing, treat 36 inches as the whole chime. The height cell is 91.4 cm, and one UK review says the figure runs from hook to sail rather than along a tube. The Wind Chime Shop uses the same idea of overall length, from the hanging ring to the wind catcher. Measure the spot you will hang it against that full drop, including the sail.
Is a 5.0 from three ratings better than 4.8 from thousands?
No. The Febbya star line is 5.0 from three ratings, with one UK text and no stated fault. The ASTARIN line is 4.8 from 6,129 reviews, including praise for a deep tone and complaints about loudness and a snapped cord. The larger file tells you more about what you will live with. Three perfect stars only tell you that three people have not yet written a complaint.
What if the dimensions cell does not match the title?
Keep both numbers and do not invent a compromise. Examples in this set include the FONMY 33 inch title against a 73.7 cm cell, the VEKEK bullet of about 48 cm against a millimetre cell, and the Acual 67 cm title against 12 x 12 x 8 cm. If you need a known drop for a porch beam, choose a listing where the title and the cell describe the same object.
Are wind chimes something a council will always ignore?
No. Crawley Borough Council lists wind chimes among everyday noises it will not investigate. That is one council's list. GOV.UK still has councils look into noise that could be a statutory nuisance, and night hours from 11pm to 7am are a separate point. A chime that is reasonable in a large garden can be a problem against a bedroom window. The listing cannot promise your neighbours' reaction.
When is a tangled or silent arrival a fault rather than the wind?
If the strings arrive so knotted that you cannot hang the chime, or the solar lights never come on, that is a problem with the goods, not with the weather. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 looks at quality against the price and the description, and you take that up with the retailer. A chime hung on a loose extra cord that then stays quiet is a hanging mistake, which is a different problem from a tangled delivery.
