Terra preta soil UK: what to check before you pay

Updated: October 2026

You have typed a terra preta search and the amazon.co.uk screen mixes books, peat, and bottles. You want terra preta soil for a UK bed or a pot, and you need a check order before you pay. Four of the twelve listings are guides and eight are CANNA TERRA peat mixes or liquids. Judge a row by whether it is biochar, whether that char is already charged, and whether the bag is peat. The [Terra preta comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/terra-preta) holds the twelve-row table, with shelf prices from £2.49 to £35.65. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually being sold

The folder splits into three families. Four listings are books, including a 194-page English print at £18.65 (3.8 from 4) and a 42-page English Kindle at £2.99 (4.5 from 2). Two more are German. None of those rows is a sack. The growing media are CANNA Terra Professional at £18.99 (4.4 from 119) and Terra Professional Plus at £21.48, where the title says 50 L and the volume cell says 47.5 litres (4.4 from 849). The rest are liquids. CANNA UK describes Terra Professional Plus as peat moss and bark for pots.

Identity, charge, and peat

Identity is a title test. For black-earth style soil the words you need are biochar, black earth, or terra preta used as a soil or improver. CANNA TERRA is that firm's name for peat potting mixes and for the Terra Vega and Terra Flores liquids. None of the twelve rows passes as a biochar sack. Charge applies when you find char outside this folder. The Royal Horticultural Society says straight biochar suits dense or poorly drained soil, and enriched blends suit planting. Garden Organic says uncharged biochar can lock nutrients up, so you mix it with compost for a few weeks unless the label already says pre-charged. A peat-free mix has to say peat-free.

Rate, language, and the bottles

Follow the bag when you have one. Garden Organic cites trials around 1–2 kg per square metre and notes that a 10 kg sack can typically cost around £20. Copying that rate across a whole plot is an expensive way to use a trial figure. Char that does not rot away is usually added once. Terra Vega at £13.44 prints 40 ml per 10 litres. The 5 litre Vega at £35.65 prints 1:200 instead, so you keep each ratio on its own bottle. The £12.20 Vega is the only file here that prints NPK 3-1-4. The English pair are the 194-page print and the 42-page Kindle.

What to leave in the basket

Keep a CANNA row when you already want that peat mix or that liquid. Professional at £18.99 has a SIXNEA brand cell and a packs cell of 3. If you want terra preta soil in the UK, leave this folder's bags and bottles and buy a named biochar, or a biochar compost that states peat-free and that the char is already charged. Marshalls Garden listed Carbon Gold peat-free biochar compost at £12.99 for 20 litres, outside this folder. The terra preta versus potting compost page is the fork, the how to make terra preta page is the charging sequence, and the best biochar compost page says who should skip every listing here.

Common questions

What should I buy if I want terra preta in the UK?
Buy a product whose title says biochar, black earth, or terra preta as a soil or improver, and prefer a blend that is already charged. The twelve listings here are four books and eight CANNA TERRA peat mixes or liquids. Carbon Gold peat-free biochar compost at £12.99 for 20 litres on Marshalls Garden is a shop price outside this folder, not a rank in the table.
Is CANNA Terra Professional Plus terra preta?
B004WY110I is CANNA Terra Professional Plus, a peat potting mix at £21.48, with the title at 50 L and the volume cell at 47.5 litres, rated 4.4 from 849 reviews. CANNA UK describes that line as peat moss and tree bark for pots and grow rooms. Terra in the name is the brand line. Reviews mention peat, moisture, gnats, and lumps. You buy it when you want that growing medium. You look elsewhere when you want black earth.
Are the books a substitute for a bag?
The English print is 194 pages at £18.65 and the English Kindle is 42 pages at £2.99. Both can describe a method. Neither fills a pot. The German print at £25.62 has no rating line, and the German Kindle at £2.49 is a composting file in which one reviewer says terra preta is only mentioned in passing. Read a guide when you want steps. Buy char or a biochar compost when you want something to put in the bed.
Does the listing have to say peat-free?
If peat-free is what you are paying for, the listing has to say peat-free. The CANNA bags in this folder describe peat, and a phase-out bullet from December 2023 on the £18.99 listing is a seller line. The RHS says there is still no legislation in force banning horticultural peat, so a peat bag remains a legal product today. It remains a different product from biochar compost, which is the reason to read the ingredients before you pay.
Should the char already be charged?
When the bag says pre-charged, or it is already a compost blend, follow that label. When it is straight biochar, Garden Organic warns that uncharged char can lock nutrients up, so mix it with compost for a few weeks first. The RHS points straight char at dense or poorly drained soil and enriched blends at planting. This folder has no char bag on which to read that line.
