How to secure a tarpaulin

Updated: October 2026

You have the sheet, the rain is due, and a loose edge is already lifting. How to secure a tarpaulin means using every eyelet, giving the water somewhere to run, and stopping before the job becomes a scaffold or a roof people stand under. Products Compared read the fastening lines on twelve amazon.co.uk sheets on 15 October 2026. This is not a storm test, and a link to amazon.co.uk may earn us a commission. GSM stays on the [tarpaulin buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/tarpaulin/sub/tarpaulin-buying-guide). The [tarpaulin comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/tarpaulin) is the table if you have not bought yet. No listing here states a safe wind speed.

Use every eyelet, not only the corners

The rings are fixing points, not a hanger. Tarpaflex says not to hang a sheet by the eyelets alone and to use every ring, because pooled water loads the seams. That is seller advice, not a test of these parcels. Four corners leave the sides flapping. Lay the sheet with spare, close the windward side first, and pad a sharp edge. After wind, walk the ties. If it still sails, take it down. A knot does not turn a 60 gsm sheet into a roof. HipperTech and KAV do not state a pitch, so count the rings you unpack.

Give the sheet a fall

A tight flat sheet still holds water. Lift the middle on a pole, a taut line, or the high side of the load, and let the low edge drip onto the ground, not back onto the thing you are covering. Empty a pool if one forms. Do not walk a puddle to the corner on a thin sheet. The small B2C listing says that if the sheet is flat, with no real angle for run-off, water may still leak through. A closer eyelet pitch gives you more ties. It does not remove the need for a fall.

Bungee, rope, and what is in the parcel

Seller guides prefer bungee in gusts because it gives, and a rope over the top of a large sheet as well as ties through the rings. That is a preference for movement, not a claim that bungee is always safer than rope. Tension whatever you use, and do not leave half the rings empty. Most parcels do not include cord. The green SolaDirect 3 × 4 m lists rope, so buy cord or bungees for the others. Good knots do not change the GSM. Chairs and logs also need an air gap: tarpaulin for garden furniture.

When you stop and call a professional

Stop when the sheet is going onto a scaffold. The Health and Safety Executive says never to sheet a scaffold, or attach debris netting, unless the people who designed and erected it are told, because the scaffold has to be designed for that sheet. A garden tarpaulin is not that design. Stop as well for a cover people will sleep or work under at height, and for a real roof where the tarp is only a stopgap. If the cloth is the thin end of this set, read best heavy duty tarpaulin before you expect knots to do the work of grams.

Common questions

How do you tie a tarpaulin so it does not sail?
Support the sheet, tie every eyelet, close the windward edge first, and keep a slope so wind and water are not both pushing on a flat belly. Pad sharp edges, check the ties after wind, and take the sheet down if an edge keeps flying. No listing here states a wind speed at which this is safe.
Should you use every eyelet or only the corners?
Use every eyelet. Four corners put the load on four rings and leave the sides free to flap. Stated pitch is 0.5 m on Velway and the silver-black B2C title, about 1 m on most of the others, and unstated on HipperTech and KAV. Count the rings on the sheet you have, then use them.
Is bungee better than rope?
UK seller advice prefers bungee in gusts because it gives, and a rope over a large sheet as well as ties through the rings. That does not mean bungee is always safer. A loose bungee still lets the edge fly, and a cord that cannot move can cut a ring. Tension every point, with whatever you actually have.
How do you stop rain pooling on the sheet?
Give it a fall or a ridge, and empty a pool if one forms. The small B2C listing says a flat sheet with no run-off may leak. A seller rule of thumb, not a lab result, is that 1 cm of water over 1 m² weighs about 10 kg, which is why a sag then pulls eyelets out. A tighter knot on a flat cover does not replace a slope.
Which sheets in this set include rope?
The green SolaDirect 3 × 4 m lists rope. The small B2C says rope is welded into the hem, though one review found none. Simplz builds polypropylene rope into the hem, not as a loose coil. The other nine listings do not list a loose rope. Buy cord if the parcel is the sheet alone.
Can you sheet a scaffold with a garden tarpaulin?
No. HSE says never to sheet a scaffold unless the designers and erectors are told, because it must be designed for the sheet. These are domestic polyethylene covers. Stop as well if people will sleep or work under the cover at height, or if the sheet is standing in for a real roof.
When should you take the sheet down?
Take it down if you cannot stop it sailing, if water is pooling and you cannot give it a fall, or if eyelets are tearing out. Also take it down when the short job is finished. Reviews here talk about a season or about a year, then holes. No UV claim includes a tested number of years.
